To ask if you have a carbon monoxide alarm and if no, why not?

Would Ibu to ask if any of you have gas but don't have an alarm? Saw a poster on here whose daughter died from carbon monoxide and our alarm saved our families life (we hadnt always had one, we used to have the colour changing dots which wouldn't of notified us like the alarm did). Ours was £20 but you can get them cheaper

We've got one and both sets of parents have alarms. Mils alarm actually went off when her boiler developed a fault thank goodness. Essential piece of safety kit.

We have 2 CO alarms, one in the loft void/cupboard behind our bed where the boiler is. The other is in the living room where we have a wood burner. Both of these are wired into the alarm system along with the fire alarm (hallway) and heat detectors (kitchen and living room) and they all sound if any one of them goes off. It's noisy when we tested 3 months ago.

We also have a stand alone CO monitor nearer the woodburner.

Not messing around. Someone I went to school with died of CO poisoning.

Good on that uni !

Our boiler is in the utility which is in the extension. Also in the extension but closer to the house is the kitchen in which we have a gas cooker. Central heating is also gas.

Where should I place a detector? I was thinking perhaps on top of a kitchen cupboard (they don't reach the ceiling and we can get to the top of them easily). Is that the best place?

maninawomansworld · 20/02/2015 14:06

We don't have one because we live in the back of beyond and then some and don't have gas.
If we had gas though, I'd have them in every room with gas appliances - as essential as smoke alarms IMO.

tilliebob · 20/02/2015 14:11

Nope - no gas in our entire village and no fires gas, open or otherwise in the house. Not sure if our mains wired fire alarms (4 of them) have carbon monoxide detectors in them too?

Sparklingbrook · 20/02/2015 14:24

there was a post upthread saying it doesn't just relate to gas.

tilliebob · 20/02/2015 16:27

We have no fires of any sort, and the boiler is in a shed unattached to the house. Unless the hob/oven is an issue I won't be bothering. Our last house was all gas and as we moved I gave my Carbon monoxide alarm to my neighbour.

NotALondoner · 20/02/2015 20:16

Paint fumes can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

Just buy an alarm, put the battery in and argue about it on the internet later.

They're less than a tenner on Amazon.

We have 2 CO2 detectors. One is in the living room, where we have an open fire. The other is in the kitchen where we have an oil fired boiler in a cupboard. No gas here. Our house is detached.

If, as pp have suggested, you dont need them for an oil boiler (I thought you did) then would I be better moving the kitchen one to upstairs, where the chimney breast runs through my ds bedroom?

I also take one of them on holiday, as I've heard too many horror stories about holiday accommodation.
