To not be surprised our kids are so fat

When they're fed utter crap like this;

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/food/article-2957301/What-school-lunches-look-like-world.html

No wonder obesity rates are so high, mand no wonder so many British children are incredibly picky when they're fed processed shite as is evident in these pictures. Imagine some of the pickiest UK children being handed a bowl of miso soup, or prawns, or plantain?!

Is the issue budgetary, or culture? Either way, we're failing our children.

Those were the days! Grin I'm the epitome of healthy living now tho of course! I believe that lots of women have fertility issues now because of low body fat/eating disorders as teens.

natureplantar101 · 23/02/2015 18:21

I take ham salad wraps to work with seeded wraps a low fat yogurt some veg like carrot batons mangetout baby sweetcorn etc and some fruit and juice water a few tortilla chips all swapped around and different each day it work out at about £2 a day per lunch and my box is always jam packed with stuff it took me a while to be so creative and open minded DP has 2 ham rolls some petit filous and crisps biscuits im more of a fresh eater though so that wouldn't do anything for me

natureplantar101 · 23/02/2015 18:31

You can also do just a salad box or a pasta box etc lunchboxes are anything but soggy sandwiches and crisps these days

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 23/02/2015 18:40

Nature my DS1 wouldn't eat it, would be a total waste of time and money, but I see your point.

bumbleymummy · 23/02/2015 20:59

Maybe we should ask why there are so many fussy eaters that will 'only eat' crap processed food?

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 23/02/2015 21:02

Bumble he would eat it at home, just if I sent it in a packed lunch it would all come back again at the end of the day!

Sirzy · 23/02/2015 21:04

I think for a lot of children it is because that is what they are fed from a young age and that is what society says they should be eating.

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 23/02/2015 21:07

My 3 DS are all pretty good, love fruit and veggies and will generally eat most things - we are all just a family that hates packed lunches

bumbleymummy · 23/02/2015 21:14

Don't get me started on kids' menus in restaurants Sirzy! Some of the nicest restaurants we've been to still have crap food on the children's menu. Chips chips and more bloody chips! What's wrong with smaller portions of the adult meals?

bumbleymummy · 23/02/2015 21:15

Sorry - that's in response to the 'what society says they should be eating' part.

Sirzy · 23/02/2015 21:19

Exactly. I love it when places have a "light bites" menu as DS often orders of them instead.

bumbleymummy · 23/02/2015 21:22

Us too! :) Or we split an adult meal between two (with extra veg or something)

natureplantar101 · 23/02/2015 21:30

So you hate normal food you would normally eat at home just because its in a chilled box in your bag ? Hmm ok then.

IfNotNowThenWhen · 24/02/2015 10:56

I hate packed lunches. Something nasty happens to sandwiches when wrapped in foil or cling film and kept in a sweaty plastic container. I don't really enjoy cold food much at all though. I even like my salads with some warm element, eg toasted seeds or whatever. Loads of people hate packed lunches!

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 24/02/2015 11:23

Thank you IfNot, new we weren't the only ones!! It just doesn't look or taste right

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 24/02/2015 11:24

Oooops!! *knew

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 24/02/2015 12:17

Posted this on wrong thread earlier - went to SW this morning, a lady getting weighed and her toddler has a giant bag of smarties - think the irony was lost on her

natureplantar101 · 24/02/2015 15:43

You dont use clingfilm or tinfoil Hmm never met anyone that does that you just use an airtight box with sections like a systima quad and put everything in no wonder it goes soggy for you you'd be soggy by lunchtime if you were wrapped in film Wink

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 24/02/2015 15:56

Still not gonna happen

Feckeggblue · 24/02/2015 16:26

Oh god I'm the same sweaty picked lunches make me feel queasy and putting a sandwich straight into the box without wrap is even worse. Childhood nightmares. I can have packed lunch now if it's something like a toasted bagel or crusty roll- something less soggy basically

natureplantar101 · 24/02/2015 17:21

Have fun failing your kids on a nutritional basis every lunchtime then. harsh truth

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 24/02/2015 18:15

Have fun on your pedestal - mind you don't fall
