Why would anyone want a one way trip to Mars?

I suppose they feel that they'll get their names into the history books. But what a waste: young, gifted, so much to offer our own Earth world. Are they mad or just mega egotistical?

Yes and the absolutely horrific freezing temperatures and the poisonous air. I take it they will live in sealed living quarters or some such.

ToffeeWhirl · 17/02/2015 20:42

I'm glad to see a thread on this at last. Have been a bit obsessed with the Mars One mission since hearing Maggie Lieu interviewed on 'Woman's Hour' (looks like she didn't make the final 33). Personally, I cannot imagine anything worse for myself than this mission, but then I'm risk averse and love being with friends and family, so I'm ill suited to it. It's a challenge for me to get inside someone else's head and understand why and how they could do it.

OhFlippityBolax · 17/02/2015 20:43

Will they practice by living in the north pole in hermetically sealed bubbles? I mean, eventually the air will become noxious enough to match Mars...

ToffeeWhirl · 17/02/2015 20:43

Correction: final 50.

SurlyCue · 17/02/2015 20:45

I think its fantastic that its happening (if it is real) and well done to those brave enough to do it. But its not for me. My idea of pushing the boundaries is painting the chimney breast a different colour than the other walls Grin

LynetteScavo · 17/02/2015 20:49

But Earth is such an amazing place...I don't want to go off to other planets, until I've checked out all of the one I'm on.

ToffeeWhirl · 17/02/2015 20:52

Correction 2: Maggie Lieu has made it onto the final list.

ToffeeWhirl · 17/02/2015 20:52

short list, I mean .

ToffeeWhirl · 17/02/2015 20:53

Surly - steady on...

flumperoo · 17/02/2015 20:54

Nor sure if anyone has posted this lik already, but lots of interesting info here... www.mars-one.com/

i think its sick
i heard that a local woman had been shortlisted and was mildly interested, then i heard the news story again and picked up on "one way" Shock
basically a live, reality horror sci-fi movie.

dougierose · 17/02/2015 21:03

Which one of them will go mad first? Provided they survive the take off, the journey, the landing, the exit from the spaceship, the setting up of camp...

Tinkerball · 17/02/2015 21:05

It could turn into that film Event Horizon.

calmexterior · 17/02/2015 21:07

I think I've been living on Mars.... This is the first I've heard of this mission Blush

Stealthpolarbear · 17/02/2015 21:07

that site is amateursih
the official quotes do not ring true.
i think this whole thing is a hiant april fool in the making

OhFlippityBolax · 17/02/2015 21:11

Ooh I love event horizon brilliant film

ragged · 17/02/2015 21:12

Roanoke Colony all over again, best case scenario.
Makes me very sad we've given up on this planet & so keen to go find a different one to ruin.

happybubblebrain · 17/02/2015 21:13

I went on a space rocket simulator recently, that was enough space exploration for me. If I was 85 years old or diagnosed with a terminal illness I might consider it.

nocoolnamesleft · 17/02/2015 21:13

I really don't think they're going to pull it off. Otherwise...it might almost have been tempting. To be one of the first to stand on a new world? To strive to colonise a new world? Awe inspiring.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 17/02/2015 21:14

Folks, Mars One is a scam. They have neither the money nor the technology to go anywhere.

www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/11228040/Is-the-Mars-One-mission-just-a-scam.html

None of these people are going to Mars. It's nonsense. It's ludicrous, and irresponsible, that so much of the press coverage is regurgitating their press releases without any skepticism.

If your lived one signed up to this you would have nothing to worry about, they are going nowhere.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/02/2015 21:16

God, imagine if we sent a load of 85 year olds - with their tea and bowls and Battenburg

What the fuck would the aliens think of us Grin

It would be brilliant - they'd think we really respected and revered our elderly to send them on such an important mission

ARoomWithoutAView · 17/02/2015 21:17

Is Sally Webster going?

SurlyCue · 17/02/2015 21:22

Makes me very sad we've given up on this planet & so keen to go find a different one to ruin

Hardly given up. Confused There are only a handful of people going- most of us are staying to continue ruining this one Grin

cogitosum · 17/02/2015 21:24

Never heard of this but it must be utter bollox.

If they were sending people to Mars it'd be people who studied science and trained so they would actually find something out. If would not be a reality tv show.
