To find the phrase "He took me out" a bit....something...

I know it's the way people describe a partner taking the initiative and perhaps booking somewhere...or arranging an outing...but I find it annoying.

I just read on another thread "She got taken out for a meal and a walk by the canal"

And I thought...like a dog!?

This isn't a thread about a thread because this phrase has annoyed me before.

"He took me out"

"He never takes me out"

What's up with "We don't go out much" or "He's never arranged a night out for us!"

Do men say "She took me out for a meal"

???

except on mn derek
here they are all sexist and stuff

KindleFancy · 15/02/2015 23:30

The only time I would say 'DH took me out' would be it it was a surprise and I didn't know where we were going. Otherwise it's just 'Dh and I went to x'.

The only example I can think of is an anniversary a few years ago. Dh planned a whole day/night. We did a day activity, then went to the cinema then for 'a drive' which was actually camping on the beach with enough wine to bath in and a steak dinner cooked on a disposable barbecue Grin

I would say 'dh took me out' was pretty accurate.

Hypotenuse · 15/02/2015 23:33

Derek I would assume some sort of beat down or murder had occurred with "I took him out".

We don't get out that much! However, I would use ' he took me out' or ' I took him out' or ' we went out together' depending on whose idea it was and who booked the table/tickets. No big deal, just say it as it is in my book.

RJnomore · 15/02/2015 23:39

Aww I like it when DH takes me out.

If I come into some money I usually say come on DH and kids I'm taking you out for dinner.
I must be a big bad dom

Pomegranatemolasses · 15/02/2015 23:44

If DH 'took me out' then it would be for a lovely unexpected treat, planned by him. Other than that, we just 'head into town'.

I can't actually recall hearing the phrase in living memory, other than the context I've mentioned.

Samcro · 15/02/2015 23:46

EatShitDerek i am going to take you out

MrsTawdry · 16/02/2015 00:10

Ginger perhaps I mean when couples co-habit or are married....then finances are all the same...so weird to consider something "his treat" really.

YANBU.

Language IS important. All these people that say "ooh fancy getting your knickers in a twist, it's only a turn of phrase" are missing the point massively.
