It is just too hard.

I cannot take it upon myself to decide where to flipping go.

What if it's a dump?

There is just too much choice and I get overwhelmed and confused.

So please help me.

I need a greek island.
Not lively. Not clubby. Not 'child friendly' and plastic.
I like a nice beach. I like a nice sit on the front with a glass of plonk. I like a nice pool. I like a bit of culture and a nice evening stroll. Budget is a bit small, so not fancy.

Please please tell me where to go.

Outsource the search to Scott Dunn. You can always book direct but they'll do tonnes of the search. Also browse their site for inspiration. Or mister and mrs smith.

Friends recommended Kefalonia so that's where we're going this year. Skala.
Check out: www.greekisland.co.uk

Lindos is amazing - eating on the rooftops of restaurants with incredible views all around was a great experience. Loads of narrow winding streets with little shops and delis.

Also loved kefalonia and skiathos though, Zakynthos less so as the bit we were in was very commercialised.

carlywurly · 15/02/2015 19:56

Highly recommend the nine muses hotel in skala if you go there. Smile

PinkSnowAndStars · 15/02/2015 19:58

Love Corfu personally! We usually stay in Sidari, canel de amor side away from the main strip!

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/02/2015 19:59

Another one saying Kefalonia, although was years ago I was last there.

I really recommend doing an escorted island tour - fascinating history, having been invaded/settled by lots of different folk over the centuries, all of whom have left their mark.

The South has beaches and Argostoli (main town) is lovely - big open square where you can sit out at little tables in the evening.

The north is much rockier and has Fiskardo, little fishing place with lots of history and interesting stuff.

In between are all sorts of fascinating places, including monasteries with mummified saints etc.

Ithaca is beautiful.

MrsCakesPrecognition · 15/02/2015 20:03

I was meant to be booking our first overseas holiday with the DCs. But I couldn't work out how to book an apartment, which fitted with flights and how to get from airport to apartment. So we are going to stay in the UK again.

LouiseBrooks · 15/02/2015 20:03

Skiathos or Samos. Both are gorgeous. Pythagorio or Kokkari on Samos are great and it's not very touristy, but tourist "enough" IYSWIM. Samos is also fairly cheap. Skiathos is beautiful, especially as long as you're not there at the height of the season,

If you wait and book last minute, use Sunvil, their offers are usually very good and their standards aof accommodation are high. They go to lots of islands, plus some beauitful areas on the mainland.

Another vote for Kefalonia. I cannot rate it highly enough. We go to Skala and the only let down (for OP) would be that its a pebble beach.

We stayed a little out of the main town in the Apollo Apartments www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g664630-d622523-Reviews-Apollo_Apartments_Skala-Skala_Cephalonia_Ionian_Islands.html

I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Sistedtwister · 15/02/2015 20:05

Cephalon is, my very favourite of favourite Greek Islands.

And if you book I am very very jealous, just so you know

Sistedtwister · 15/02/2015 20:06

cephalonia damn ipad

youbethemummylion · 15/02/2015 20:07

Try Garden Hotel in Rhodes

The80sweregreat · 15/02/2015 20:08

Poros is nice, have to go on a boat from Athens so its a bit of a faff to get to, but its small, not too busy and had lovely beaches. Mind you, it was 25 years since I went so may have changed a bit..

CameliousHumph · 15/02/2015 20:19

Is it unreasonable to go to a travel agent and let them do it?

Another vote for Kefalonia! We stayed in Blue Sea apts in Katelios it was very beautiful quiet relaxing and we did some excursions which were great too! Good restaurants along the beach etc highly recommend

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 15/02/2015 21:02

MrsCakes, you want www.resorthoppa.com for transfers. If you go somewhere like Mallorca, some Canary Islands or Spanish costas there are flights every day unless you are looking at a very small airport, so you can just choose your apt then flights.

Jollyjollysixpence · 15/02/2015 21:05

Crete is gorgeous , just stay away from the eastern bit of the island. Also Hydra and Poros.

kewtogetin · 15/02/2015 21:06

I'm having the same terrible problem.....
Wanting to go to the amalfi coast in September to celebrate a 'big' wedding anniversary but I've been putting it off for weeks now. Too many places, too many hotels. Pool? No pool? Beach or high on a cliff for the views? Quiet and secluded or in a town??? Aaaaargh. Fuck it, let's go to Rhyl.

Charley50 · 15/02/2015 21:12

I agree the choice is a complete nightmare. I really like North east Corfu, it's lushious,

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 15/02/2015 21:22

Do travel agents still actually exist??

NorbertDentressangle · 15/02/2015 21:24

oooh I like the sound of Kefalonia - meets our requirements too. Is it a bit too hot in August though?

MonkeySeeMonkeyDooo · 15/02/2015 21:32

Think we stayed in Lassi in Kefalonia. The hotel was on a hill with an amazing view. We hired a car so we could drive round the island. Loved it.

beatricequimby · 15/02/2015 21:34

Amorgos is my favourite Greek island. Faff to get to but v cheap once you are there.

meandjulio · 15/02/2015 21:40

I'd also say Kefalonia though the culture is a little thin tbh - we liked that as it meant less time looking at monuments and more time with the whole wine/food/swimming thing.

Contact Sunvil - they are genuinely fantastic, let them sort you out. We stayed at the Gonatas Hotel but it was pre-kids so let them advise you.
