AIBU to be absolutely flabbergasted that there are people who think this is acceptable?

I'm on a train. The guy behind me is watching some kind of sports match on a tablet. I travel a lot by train and often, mostly at the weekends, there are people with gadgets that play films or TV and they don't put their earphones in. Slightly separate issue from having the earphones up too loud - that's annoying but a part of life, however to not even try to mute the noise by just playing your TV show to the whole carriage? Fuming.

When I was 19 (and too shy to turn around and politely ask someone to keep it down) I had to endure Dora the Explorer at full volume from Penzance to London whilst the child's parents read their own book.

AIBU? Is it acceptable not to put earphones in? Am I missing a trick?

YANBU

If I don't have earphones I browse internet instead.

LiDLrichardsPistachioSack · 15/02/2015 17:31

YAN fucking BU!!!!

kinkyfuckery · 15/02/2015 17:38

YANBU, people should definitely use headphones for this, unless there are more than one child watching on one tablet/etc where of course it is unavoidable.

Andrewofgg · 15/02/2015 17:38

This has been gasting my flabber for years, and I don't hesitate to ask people to use their earphones - and then others always chime in and agree, why didn't you speak out first, you gutless slobs?

NoArmaniNoPunani · 15/02/2015 17:39

YANBU.

GokTwo · 15/02/2015 17:40

Yanbu. We have endured some bloody awful train journeys like this. The last one was interrupted by 10 drunk football fans who got on pissed, continued to drink and play cards, shouting and swearing for 3 hours. Conductor came and spoke to them to no avail. Some people are selfish bastards.

Andrewofgg · 15/02/2015 17:41

No kinkyfuckery, it is not unavoidable. One table, one child with earphones, parent in charge decides which, and the other child does without. Reads a book, does some colouring - or (gulp) parent talks to other child?

Andrewofgg · 15/02/2015 17:41
  • tablet not table. Obviously.
RollaCola · 15/02/2015 17:44

YANBU, but I think the majority of people, and I include myself in that, are afraid of confrontation with a stranger and choose to either seeth inwardly or stick thei headphones in a drown it out. Because of this the perpetrators assume no one minds and carry on with their selfish ways.

ArghMeToes · 15/02/2015 17:48

Gok That reminds me of a trip before Christmas - drunk and abusive squaddies for two hours, hassling every woman that walked past. I asked the guard to have a word, which he did but he was clearly scared of them (large group). They realised someone had complained and started shouting to the carriage about how the "bitch" clearly needed to get laid. They were so abusive I nearly called their barracks (they were obvious about where they were going). They also had a phone playing music at full volume that they were singing along to. Was one of the worst journeys ever, I was just pleased they did it realise it was me - they were looking around to find out who had complained, they assumed it was a woman.

Andrew Agree wholeheartedly with everything you say. Also it is possible - or it was when I was growing up - to get a double jack for earphones. My sister and I could then plug both set of headphones into one Walkman.

Yanbu. I have a tablet. Have been known to use it in the train but if I'm watching anything I use earphones.

casusally · 15/02/2015 17:53

I wanted to stab a bitch that had her phone music playing one journey from Nottingham to London. As we came into London the ctupid sunt was asleep with the phone blaring on the table next to her. Wanted to take it and smash it.

PeaceOfWildThings · 15/02/2015 17:56

We have 'splitters' for when 2 DCs are sharing music on phones/videos on laptops, so they both have headphones/earphones.

financialwizard · 15/02/2015 17:59

My son does this in the car and in the house (he is 13) it drives me freaking crazy. He has ear phones. He now uses them or loses the iPad.

Strangers would get a withering look I think, although tbh I never use public transport because of how remote we are.

BerylStreep · 15/02/2015 18:04

OP I would definitely have complained about the behaviour of the squaddies to their barracks. Completely unacceptable and would have been dealt with. Would have been interesting if there had been some video footage to show them what their behaviour had been like.

It's called sodcasting. Utterly selfish.

princesspuds · 15/02/2015 18:20

My dd goes into hospital quite often and I always have headphones when she takes in her tablet/laptop etc so as not to disturb others, shame other parents don't do the same

PedantMarina · 15/02/2015 18:35

I take a train line where 1 in 4 carriages is the "Quiet Zone". Let's not even discuss how that doesn't always get obeyed or enforced.

But frequently in the other carriages, I'll confront gits with too-loud headphones, etc. If they give me the "this isn't the Quiet Zone", my stock answer would be: "that doesn't mean the other three carriages are the Inconsiderate Asshole Zone".

I haven't had to use it. Yet. But just having it in my brain has given me a Glow, I think.

JsOtherHalf · 15/02/2015 19:31

Double splitter with separate volume controls. I have them, and they work well:

mrsmootoo · 15/02/2015 19:34

YANBU. It's the same with people who put their feet on seats. If I'm feeling brave I will confront them. It is very frustrating when conductors don't deal with antisocial behaviour.

kinkyfuckery · 15/02/2015 22:01

Didn't know about the headphone splitter. For some reason my Amazon isn't loading tonight but shall save it for later, thanks.

Fuckmath · 15/02/2015 22:07

Yanbu!

I would have a word unless I really was afraid of getting my head kicked in, I which case I'd hope someone else or the guard would say something.

Some people are bloody rude. I also hate it when people force you to listen to their Young Dcs' loud singing toys all the way.

Fuckmath · 15/02/2015 22:08

And to the pp who thinks it's unavoidable for us all to listen to their loud ipad if their two dc both want to watch - completely unacceptable. PLEASE get a Splitter and stop being so antisocial.
