To think this builder is starting to border on harrassment

I got some quotes for a job in November. It was a big job (about £22,000) so I got four quotes, went with one of them after taking references and emailed the other 3 to say that I'd decided to use another builder on this occassion.

Since then one of the builders has been phoning me at least once a week and often twice. His quote was £10k higher than the next lowest (which we went with the other 2 were a bit lower but I didn't like the builders.). I told him several times that we had given the job to someone else but he still keeps phoning and emailing. I've been dropping his phone calls to voice mail and ignoring his emails for the last couple of weeks but quite honestly I've had enough and am close to accusing him of harassment. He phoned again today and left a message to say that he wasn't happy with my decision and thought I'd gone with a second rate building firm just to save money and the job would be badly done. He sounded almost threatening to be honest.

Hopefully he'll get the point now

listsandbudgets · 12/02/2015 19:29

Well he's clearly more stupid than I thought. Another text message late afternoon "apologies if I've caused you any inconvenience - when I quote I expect to get the job so will contact you soon to discuss this. by the way you do not have my permission to forward emails to anyone including your solicitor or other builders"

Boss got me to print off everything including phone logs and text messages and has sent the whole lot to our solicitor.

Out of my hands and it feels quite a relief to be honest (oh and I've worked out how to block his calls from his mobile and home number at least)

I've actually gone from thinking overly determined business man to stupid and a bit threatening.

Wow he doesn't give up does he? Imagine what he'd be like actually working for you!

And as for 'permission' to seek legal advice against him - bonkers as well and annoying and slightly threatening!

{
Please keep us posted! I predict he will be highly entertaining persistant!

Aeroflotgirl · 12/02/2015 19:36

What an idiot who thinks very highly of himself.

Aeroflotgirl · 12/02/2015 19:37

You have had a narrow escape, imagine you employed him.

Koalafications · 12/02/2015 19:42

Yes, because you need permission from someone to report them for harassment Hmm

He is shocking.

CaptainHammer · 12/02/2015 19:52

Wow! I can't believe how thick skinned he is, you definitely made the right decision not to go with him!

GatoradeMeBitch · 12/02/2015 19:54

I'm considering actively looking for a woman who does gardening building work because even getting quotes from men has been exasperating. The first company sent two men over who didn't want to hear anything but the bare minimum from me, therefore giving me a very inaccurate quote. The last one seemed so desperate to not have to communicate with a woman that he actually brought my Tesco grocery delivery driver into the conversation. Odder still was that we were discussing the time frame for the work. He told the TESCO GUY that he could start work here in three weeks. Tesco guy seemed to think that would be fine. They can all fuck off. I'd rather do without a fence than give my money to knobheads.

GatoradeMeBitch · 12/02/2015 19:56

Oh sorry OP, I went off on my own little tangent there! Please keep us updated, I want to hear how high this guy can string himself up!

Icimoi · 12/02/2015 19:56

What a plonker. You don't need his permission to do anything you like with his messages and emails. You didn't ask him to send them, after all.

Whatisaweekend · 12/02/2015 20:02

Have you tried googling this weirdo? I am wondering if there reviews out there about him, citing this kind of odd behaviour. Glad your boss is taking this seriously. I would find it a little unsettling to be honest.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 12/02/2015 20:16

Wow, being in the police would be a peaceful quiet job if people needed to get permission to report from their harasser/ burglar / fraudster/ rapist etc,

Oh please Mr Kidnapper can I send your ransom demand to the police who will help track you down pretty please? No? Oh ok, sure have a million...

Idiot!!! Glad he's going to get a solicitors letter and it's not up to you to keep engaging with him

SocialMediaAddict · 12/02/2015 20:16

Bloody hell. What a bonkers way to try and get work!

Keep us posted.

FryOneFatManic · 12/02/2015 20:19

Somehow I doubt he'd do this to a bloke. But he's certainly seriously weird. Hope you get this sorted out soon.

DartmoorDoughnut · 12/02/2015 20:20

He sounds utterly barking! Lucky escape for you & your boss I ghknk!

DartmoorDoughnut · 12/02/2015 20:21

I think not I ghknk Hmm

FryOneFatManic · 12/02/2015 20:22

Actually, it's good that your boss is on the ball and not leaving you to sort this alone.

Henbur1702 · 12/02/2015 20:27

He sounds like a loon! He forgot to mention you don't have his permission to talk to the police about his harassing behaviour (because of course we can act however we like if we add our own disclaimers) - absolute nut job you've done the right thing!

listsandbudgets · 12/02/2015 20:45

Just come back from putting the children to bed to find an email from OUR builder

Hi Lists

Don't worry this man is well known for being difficult - sadly those sort of comments are typical. He went quiet for a few months. I'll put the word round that he's started up again. Surprised hes got time to do any work as he spends so much time being rude about everyone else. We're all sick of him.

The jobs going well - are you coming to check on it tomorrow we need to talk about taps and paint.

Take care

Your builder

I actually feel a bit better sounds likee its not just me that gets treated to his idiotic treatment Grin

Oddy can't find any reviews for him - perhaps no one employs him so sees not point in leaving a review!!

HowCanIMissYouIfYouWontGoAway · 12/02/2015 21:27

bloody hell, he sounds bonkers.

That last one sounded like some sort of threat. contact you to discuss it. who the hell does he think he is.

I'd be pointing out that you don't need his permission to forward to a solicitor and you don't need his permission to forward to the police which is exactly who you'll be forwarding it to if he ever contacts you again.

listsandbudgets · 12/02/2015 21:33

Boss has told me explicitly NOT to contact him again. He's said all further communication is to be forwarded directly to him. Only thing he's told me off for (gently) is not telling him weeks ago

OP posts:
Ratarse · 12/02/2015 21:39

Wow! What a prick.

HowCanIMissYouIfYouWontGoAway · 12/02/2015 21:43

I hope your boss puts the fear of god into him.

I can't believe this guy treats people like this. A quote isn't a contract ffs. He's got a serious problem!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/02/2015 21:50

they have a reputation as conmen, will cheat me out of thousands of pounds and I will seriously regret using them!!

So not only is this little treasure harassing you, he's slandering your builders Shock

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 12/02/2015 22:57

To be fair lists you weren't to know and when I typed my post I certainly didn't envisage he's as bad as he's turned out to be. I still thought he was beyond the pale though.
Glad in a way he's gone even further as now your boss has taken ownership of the whole issue and also your contracted builder is on the case too.

I've never encountered anyone that bad and of course you start off being reasonably polite if a bit firm. Whatever happens to this guy's business he's bringing it on himself.

Gator - how utterly bizarre Shock
