To ask for suggestions for a fab place to eat in NYC

I'm going to New York next month for DH's birthday and want to find a really nice restaurant.

There are so many on Tripadvisor I don't know where to start.

We don't want a mega fancy Michelin star place but somewhere with fab food and a great all round 'experience'

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Vivolo Restaurant, if you like Italian,

Ask for a seat near the fireplace :-)

Bouley in Tribeca is Michelin starred (1), but the lunch menu is fab, and just $55 per head, the best value in NY! River Café is great and has fabulous views of the city.

I know you said you didn't want a mega fancy Michelin starred place, but the lunch deal at Jean Georges (three stars) is just about the best value in the entire culinary world, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Dinosaur BBQ is amazing too.

Del Friscos on Time Square is lovely and the best of the NY steak places, behind Quality Meat up near the park. We got chatting to the sommelier during our meal, who asked for one of our business cards. A week after we got home, we got a thank you card from the restaurant for going!
If your or DH are squeamish, you have to walk past the carcasses hanging up in big glass fridges between the door and maitre' d station...

Gramecy Tavern is also lovely and in a lovely park

Oh! And the Boathouse in Central Park!

I second Del Friscos. DH loves Tao. I like the TriBeCa Bar and Grill.

From where you're staying OP, try the Red Flame diner on West 44th for breakfast. Sets you right up!

Another vote for Ellen's stardust diner

If you like steak - you HAVE to go to Keens - DH & I had the BEST steak ever there - its on W36th nearish to times square. We were in a hotel on 35th and walked to Times with no problems at all

Its not cheap, but i'm never eating steak again as they wont be able to match it

This thread is making me want to go back to NY and just eat and eat and eat.

Robert, at the top of the museum of art and design at Columbus circle.

Modern restaurant but not ridiculous prices. If you go for lunch and get a window table, you'll have a view of Central Park.

I did a lot of research for our anniversary meal, wanted somewhere with a view, wasn't disappointed.

I echo Stroke's suggestion of Peter Luger - only just over the bridge and the best steak EVER. Also, Rubirosa in Little Italy. Fantastic.
