To ask for suggestions for a fab place to eat in NYC

I'm going to New York next month for DH's birthday and want to find a really nice restaurant.

There are so many on Tripadvisor I don't know where to start.

We don't want a mega fancy Michelin star place but somewhere with fab food and a great all round 'experience'

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Beauty and Essex.

alovelycuppatea · 10/02/2015 20:59

Boqueria was the tapas place I was thinking of near flatiron.

TranmereRover · 10/02/2015 21:04

very near you are the carnegie deli for breakfast, and gallaghers for good steak (52 / broadway).

I just searched where we've been recently and also recommend these places in Manhattan:

  • Toro; spanish / tapas place in the west village. Very open plan and buzzy and excellent food toro-nyc.com/
  • ACME; sort of scandinorwegian themed small plates tasting restaurant. had a great v trendy crowd - lots of beautiful people! www.acmenyc.com/
  • this place always gets a recommend with NYErs. High end French style restaurant, great for special occasions but pricey danielnyc.com/ He also owns about 4-8 other places in the city that scale on price and service
  • I like Hakkasan for Asian style food (but know you can get it in London too) its quite chichi and the layout confuses the shit out of me but food is good and cocktails are excellent! (you can also do just drinks there as a starter) hakkasan.com/
  • Rayuela which is fusion latin american food - you have to try the ceviche and pisco sours! www.rayuelanyc.com/

Montmartre in Chelsea is fab - stylishly relaxed and great food.

Oh, and if you have time go to the Golden Unicorn on the weekend for dimsum. Its a great favourite, get there before 11.30 and get a number and wait for a table. The pastry pork buns are my favourite, the chicken feet less so ;) They come round with little hostess carts and you can pick what you want by sight and you can stuff yourself stupid for about $20 a head

www.bobbyvans.com/ is an amazing steak house near grand central. Or if you want an experience the view www.marriott.com/hotels/hotel-information/restaurant/nycmq-new-york-marriott-marquis/ is amazing. We still talk about both these restaurants!

Sorry, not sure why that posted twice.

RJnomore · 10/02/2015 21:16

What's the rotating restaurant? Is it windows on the world or somehting?

A friend went there for her 40th - she said it was amazing.

Aquariumlife · 10/02/2015 21:16

Another vote for Del Friscos. Was recommended to us by someone who went to NY a lot on business. The steak was fab and my daughter had the most amazing lobster. The staff were lovely as was the setting. Not mega cheap but worth it.

RJnomore · 10/02/2015 21:17

Omg I'm so sorry, windows on the world was at the top of the trade centre - google reveals the one I mean is simply called The View.

flimmyflam · 10/02/2015 21:20

Honestly, I don't think you're posting this in the best place. I think most people on this site are from the UK. The NYC restaurant scene is really fast-moving, you really would be better off asking on a forum where people are familiar with it. Also there are so so many restaurants in NYC and new ones opening all the time - you have to narrow it down - other than the place not having a michelin star, what neighbourhood/type of food/price/type of atmosphere are you looking for? I have not lived there for a couple of years, but without knowing anything more, I'd say that the Spotted Pig and Minetta Tavern are good bets. Il Buco is a great but expensive Italian place. I wouldn't bother with Balthazar personally. Arbitrarily my favourite place in the city was a Cuban place on the LES, Cienfuegos, but it is more of a neighbourhood place and prob not fancy enough for your purposes. Make sure you also get to sample the range of food while you're there - it's all about eating your way around through world cuisines. Just make sure you don't end up at shake shack/5 guys/3 napkins etc. when I lived in NY I found a reliable way to find the nearest good place was to put your criteria into the restaurant search nymag and find the nearest 'critic's choice'. Or look on serious eats or grub street, two of the main blogs. But seriously, you should just post this question on a different forum.

leedy · 10/02/2015 21:25

Seconding Blue Hill. I've had two of possibly the nicest dinners of my life there.

JustMarriedBecca · 10/02/2015 21:29

Buddakan in the meat packing district is SEXY (and where Carrie and Big had their rehearsal dinner). Awesome and plenty of great bars around there for drinks beforehand (although the cocktail list at BK is brilliant too)

TheMinkette · 10/02/2015 21:34

Yea, The View is the revolving restaurant on the top floor of the Marriott Marquee hotel in Times Square and would definitely provide a great experience - maybe a bit touristy but we had great food there

Vida · 10/02/2015 21:37

I loved Print - www.printrestaurant.com/

Food was delicious, service excellent. It's not cheap, but not eye-wateringly expensive either. Good value actually.

And the BEST thing is it has a rooftop bar with the most spectacular views.

Walkable from Times Square too. But not touristy, on quite a quiet street actually, not easy to stumble across.

fishybits · 10/02/2015 21:38

Zagat's online might be a good website for you to have a look at.

I got the 2014 book for NY, it became our bible and every meal we had was amazing.

leedy · 10/02/2015 21:40

Remember the Time Out guide being reasonably useful as well.

Brummiegirl15 · 10/02/2015 22:48

I went back in September so my recommendations are pretty recent!

Keens steakhouse was amazing. One of oldest steak houses in NYC. And we loved it!!

I stayed at the Hilton Midtown ( so not far from you ) and we walked to Pershings by Grand Central station fir Brekkie and it was fab. That was a recommendation someone else have me.

It's opposite the station and Grand Hyatt hotel, under the Park Avenue viaduct. Went. 2 days in a row we loved so much !

MildDrPepperAddiction · 10/02/2015 22:57

Fiorello's at the Lincoln centre is a fab Italian.

Don't bother too much with the more famous restaurants. They can be hard to get into and can rush you.

Have a fab time!

Bambambini · 10/02/2015 23:16

Maybe not for your big evening meal idea but, I highly recommend the Loeb Boathouse in Central Park for breakfast or brunch. We found it by accident and had a beautiful breakfast by the boating lake. Really special, especially their mimosas. Then you can hire a boat for a row on the lake. Was one of my highlights.

Bambambini · 10/02/2015 23:19

And for a romantic eveing meal - maybe try Greenwich Village. We didn't eat there but loved the area, leafy and romatic with loads of little jazz bars and bistro restaraunts.

AngusAndElspethsThistleWhistle · 10/02/2015 23:27

Freemans in the Lower East Side is very good. No bookings, you turn up and sit at the bar until a table is ready.

Keen's is good too. Lots of little rooms and good steak.

For BBQ food, Blue Smoke is a step above chainy Tex-Mex food but still very relaxed.

Marcony is an upscale Italian place. Quite modern but on the pricey side.

Vatan is an incredible Indian restaurant. It's vegetarian, but you wouldn't notice iyswim! DH isn't a big veggie-only fan, but the food was amazing.

Bearbehind · 11/02/2015 10:49

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Del Friscos and the River Cafe are looking like the front runners atm.
