my neighbours should but the tumble dryer on during the day

My neighbours really piss me off with their tummble dryier. It goes on for 3 hours almost every night, I hear the slow spinning groan in my lounge when I just want quiet to read a book in the evening.

OP posts:
ClashCityRocker · 10/02/2015 20:16

What time are they tumble drying? If it's after ten, it's a bit inconsiderate.

Earlier than that, I think it's fair enough.

Chattymummyhere · 10/02/2015 20:18

I put mine on at 10pm ish and its agasint my next doors livingroom wall. I also hear her hoovering at around 8pm which bugs me as it sounds like some thing in my house is about to blow up. I don't complain and nor does she.

My dryer goes on so late due to the fact the clothes don't go in the washer till 7pm earliest and I want them dry for the morning. My dryer also "sings" every 15mins once it's finished then is not opened starts to dry again every 30mins for 15mins. It's A rated though so I don't mind the bill.

SaucyJack · 10/02/2015 20:21

Maybe they have school/work uniform that has to be washed and dried between getting in at dinner time and the next morning.

expatinscotland · 10/02/2015 20:28

Our dryer doesn't have a timer, either. Cheaper ones don't. And yy, a fire hazard if unattended.

VivaLeBeaver · 10/02/2015 20:30

How can they use a timer so it finishes early evening? They'd have wet washing sat there all day and it would stink once dry.

expatinscotland · 10/02/2015 20:32

And three hours a day, every night. Do you live next to the Radfords, or whatever the name of that couple is who have 17 kids?

UncleT · 10/02/2015 20:41

YABVVVVVVVU. They use the tumble dryer of an evening, presumably after working in the day. You don't actually have a right to perfect silence, and I doubt you're silent either. Leave people alone and butt out - you're talking like they're throwing parties FFS.

BMW6 · 10/02/2015 20:46

Put a radio on to drown out the noise of their tumble dryer. (YABU)

x2boys · 10/02/2015 21:10

Not everyone works 9_5 I have always worked shifts ,(/ I m a nurse )so I do it when I can sometimes at night early mornings etc.

OnlyTheWelshCanCwtch · 10/02/2015 21:13

My drier is on all times of day and night.
ive never considered it may disturb the neighbours, its not noisy?

HicDraconis · 10/02/2015 21:17

YABU - electricity is cheaper in the evenings, they may be out all day and not want to leave the dryer running in an unattended house, they may not have a dryer with a timer (ours doesn't).

Be glad you're not my neighbour - we run our dryer overnight. It's one of those with an economy setting which takes several hours to dry clothes but uses virtually no electricity to do it. Washing on in evening while we eat, clothes into dryer to dry slowly on the cold setting overnight. More washing on overnight if needed to hang out the next day.

FoxyMcFox · 11/02/2015 06:52

electricity is cheaper in the evenings

Confused

Erm is it? Confused

googoodolly · 11/02/2015 08:08

YABVU, but you should definitely go round and tell them when they're allowed to use their tumble dryer in their own home. I'm sure they'd only be too happy to conform to your insane made up- rules.

ilovesooty · 11/02/2015 08:28

I'm sure someone as tactful and diplomatic as you will be able to convince them that they should use their tumble dryer in such a way that your desires are their main priority and that it causes you no inconvenience.

Trills · 11/02/2015 08:31

YABU

Especially since they're not running it at night when it's disturbing your sleep, but during the evening.

Not all tumble dryers have timers.

Some people think it's unsafe to have them running if there is nobody in the house.

shovetheholly · 11/02/2015 08:34

OP, I think this is one of those things where you 'tune' into a noise and it starts to grate on your nerves, even though it's quite quiet. I think YABU to feel that your oversensitivity is your neighbour's problem - but I think it is a genuine issue for you. I would try to break the habit of being irritated by it - why not use it as an opportunity to put some nice music on? Or if you can't read with music, what about a white noise CD that will give you a blank sonic canvas?

ilovesooty · 11/02/2015 08:34

Perhaps the OP ought to move and live next to an OAP who might be able to put their tumble dryer on during the day.

CrystalHaze · 11/02/2015 08:39

Maybe you could pop round and suggest a range of alternative careers so that they could work nights and do their laundry during the day? I doubt they want to inconvenience you any more than is strictly necessary, so I'm sure they'd be willing to up-end their entire lives to save you from this untenable intrusion upon your evenings. Smile

HicDraconis · 11/02/2015 08:40

Foxy it is for us. Units are a different price depending on the time of day used and how many we've used already (the more we've used the cheaper it gets. Ish). Not UK though.

I can't wait until the solar panels are ordered :)

Staywithme · 11/02/2015 08:41

electricity is cheaper in the evenings

Only if you're on economy seven, otherwise there's no difference if you use it day or night.

Staywithme · 11/02/2015 08:43

X post with Hic
As you say Hic, makes no difference in the UK

Theoretician · 11/02/2015 09:08

And three hours a day, every night. Do you live next to the Radfords, or whatever the name of that couple is who have 17 kids?

My washer-dryer can wash a load in 20 minutes, if I go for the shortest wash programme, however add any drying cycle and it take 3-6 hours to do one load.

It's not that it's crap, it's that it has very high standards, and likes to do things perfectly. Perfection takes time, apparently.

BiddyPop · 11/02/2015 09:28

We run our dishwasher in the morning as we leave the house or as we go to bed (the days we need to), and the washing machine usually in the late afternoon on a timer (no timer function on dishwasher). But I never run the tumble dryer when we are not in the house. So it often is run as soon as we get in (about 6) or later in the evening and turned off going to bed.

There is a finite amount of time that we are home and awake - so that does dictate things rather. And we are only awake for roughly 20 minutes in the morning before leaving the house, so that's not an option either. (We use a clothes horse a lot too).

It's winter, and people work. Modern living means that you will hear noises.

DidoTheDodo · 11/02/2015 09:35

So you'd like them to rearrange their house and their routine so you can read a book?
Mmmm....right...

If they are at work during the day (as is likely) then the house will be silent for many hours. Perhaps get your reading in then.

angelos02 · 11/02/2015 09:39

YANBU. I bet they are the type of people that can only wear things once. Confused
