Why isn't alcohol treated like a class A drug?

treacleturkey · 07/02/2015 17:51

It makes people drunk and violent, many people become alcoholics/unable to function without drink, it causes liver failure and alcohol poisoning on some occasions.
Yet it's perfectly fine compared to stick drugs like MDMA (I'm not talking heroin or cocaine here) under the Class A category when they don't cause nearly as much harm.......

Treating it like a class a drug wouldn't stop people doing it, just the same way people take drugs despite them being illegal. Lots of things are bad for you. The prohibition in America in the 20s was a ban on alcohol, but it was a complete disaster, it simply went underground and people were going blind and dying from drinking dodgy liquor. I'm all for legalising and taxing everything too. You can't stop people from doing things that are bad for them.

Can anyone point to research which shows the 'safe' level of drinking is accurate? this suggests it is wrong.

BTW, the 5 a day recommendation is based on the Calfornian Fuit and veg association trying to promote thier products - there is no research that 5 a day is beneficial here

Caronaim · 08/02/2015 07:18

whatscoming - , my partner has written dozens of papers on this, and i have supported him with the research and presentation.

Maddening, the price of cannabis produced by non slave labour would be hundreds of times higher, no one would buy it.

As a teacher, the amount of damage I have seen done to teenagers by cannabis is several orders of magnitude higher than that I have seen caused by alcohol, even though alcohol use in teenagers is more than 10 times higher than cannabis use.

This is teenagers using cannabis themselves, and completely disregarding the speculation about the terrible affects secondary exposure to cannabis is having on younger children, particularly ADHD, learning difficulties, etc.

Suzannewithaplan · 08/02/2015 08:34

?
If things were prohibited on the basis of harmfulness then car driving would be illegal ?

Purpleflamingos · 08/02/2015 08:46

Have a Wine. It's the only vice in my life which is why it can't be banned. A small glass whilst cooking dinner is relaxing.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 08/02/2015 08:49

Laws should be consistent and rational, so YANBU.

LurkingHusband · 08/02/2015 09:39

Because the vast majority of people who enjoy it, do so without any serious ill-effects

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Meanwhile, in other news

www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/41-birmingham-pubs-breathalyse-customers-8587512

Midlands Police launch an initiative to test people's alcohol levels before they enter a club. Sgt Dave Francis, Mooch Bar manager Dean Cooper and PC Matt Barr

MORE than 40 Birmingham bars and clubs are planning to breathalyse customers before they are allowed IN – in a bid to slash booze-fuelled violence.

Forty-one bars have signed up to a new police and council backed scheme that is being rolled out in Broad Street, Digbeth and Hurst Street.

Door staff will use police issue ‘Alco-Blow Detectors’ to see if customers are too drunk to be allowed inside.

Any customer registering a reading of more than double the 35mg drink-drive limit (70mg) could be refused entry.

(contd)

Personal comment: Any "war on drugs" will never escape the taint of hypocrisy while alcohol and tobacco are not only legal but taxed.

More people die each month from tobacco related diseases than all the overdoses in the entire 44 years since the MDA.

Thisishowyoudisappear · 08/02/2015 09:59

I take alcohol mortality stats with a pinch of salt. AFAIK, they don't take into account, for example, murders, suicides, fatal accidents in which alcohol was a factor. please correct me if I'm wrong. Plus, re mortality rates, people who are in less than perfect health, or who have had problems with alcohol in the past, often don't drink at all, so that must skew the figures - it doesn't necessarily follow that drinking a small amount is good for you, just that those people are healthier anyway.

Theoretician · 08/02/2015 10:02

There are a lot of things in life that would be far more heavily regulated if they were "invented" now

If the motor car were to be invented today, there's no way most ordinary people would be allowed to drive them on public roads. Vehicles would mostly be driven by a tiny minority of professional drivers.

Mariacbw · 08/02/2015 10:05

If alcohol was discovered today it would be a Class A/B drug.

StormyBrid · 08/02/2015 11:01

Cannabis produced by non-slave labour would cost hundreds of times more than slave produced? Really? All the locally sourced, non-slave labour cannabis I can find is £160 an ounce. By my calculations, that means I should be able to find a slave-produced ounce for about fifty pence. Where can I get some?!

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 08/02/2015 13:13

I thought you could grow pot in your own garden. Is this not actually true?

trufflesnout · 08/02/2015 14:03

Err, well it is possible yes. But it is also illegal.

trufflesnout · 08/02/2015 14:04

StormBrid don't be ridiculous, slave labour doesn't mean that the customer pays less - it means that the middle men get a bigger margin.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 08/02/2015 14:21

If you can grow pot in your garden (in small quantities), doesn't it follow that it should be cheap and middle-men should find it hard to stay relevant?

trufflesnout · 08/02/2015 14:25

But why would you want to? To sell? Then growing it in small quantities isn't going to be viable, is it. It's also still illegal.

Suzannewithaplan · 08/02/2015 14:39

cannabis is legal in some US states, I dont think it costs substantially more than when it was only available on the black market?

WineWineWine · 08/02/2015 14:39

I think if I went to dinner with DH we would be likely to share a bottle of wine for example
If I went to dinner - which is a pretty rare event, then we might just share a bottle, but that would be the exception. The vast majority of the time, I enjoy 2-3 small glasses of wine over the whole week. I have never had a problem stopping when I have had enough. I love a glass of wine, but I hate the feeling of being drunk, so I don't go anywhere near it.

giraffesNeedBigPoloNecks · 08/02/2015 14:45

Alcohol doesn't make me violent. The pill makes me want to be violent. I think that should be banned.

LurkingHusband · 08/02/2015 15:39

You can grow cannabis in the UK, however it can be a smelly crop which tends to draw unnecessary attention. If people are going to grow it outside, they tend to find a spot well off the beaten track, and only go back to harvest it.

The ideal way to grow it is indoors, where you can control the lighting (cannabis uses photoperiod to trigger flowering), temperature, humidity, and protect from pests. Whack a fan and carbon filter on, and no one will know anything.

People who grow their own cannabis do so as they don't much like mixing with drug dealers, and also they can be sure of what they are using (street drugs are notoriously contaminated with goodness knows what). Saving money is less of a driver, and unless someone is growing an awful lot, unlikely to happen, when you add up the cost of kit and electricity.

Oh and we already do grow cannabis in this country - as a cash crop. It's called "hemp" and you can buy the oil in your supermarket, and the seeds in your pet and angling shop. The fibres are used for paper, cloth, and rope. Being fast growing, hemp is a useful plant for cleaning contaminated earth. It also fixes nitrogen into the soil, so helps reduce the need for artificial fertilizer.

Caronaim · 08/02/2015 16:56

I know we grow cannabis in this country, as I have tried to explain, it is grown by trafficked people working in slave conditions. often Asian teenagers. Males, as the females are used in prostitution.

LurkingHusband · 08/02/2015 18:19

Some. Certainly not all since, as I said, a lot of home growers want to avoid the black market.

paxtecum · 08/02/2015 18:26

Cheap alcohol works well for the government and the establishment.

Lots of young people and students prefer to get drunk rather than protest.

40 - 50 years ago students used to protest rather a lot, now they just seem to drink rather a lot.

Suzannewithaplan · 08/02/2015 18:58

yeah cheap booze = bread and circuses

VikingLady · 08/02/2015 19:32

I've never read any study about any class A drug that concluded a low regular dose made you healthier than total abstention. This may be because such studies haven't been carried out though.

However there are frequently studies showing low levels of alcohol reduce stress and stress-related illnesses including heart disease and strokes, Alzheimer's, and even various birth defects. You can look these up online very easily and follow the references back to the source publications. I have read all of these research papers myself and the abstracts at least are available for free.

Unfortunately as I'm on a truly shit iPhone I can't do that myself as the internet connection is dodgy.
