Vegtables

We were going to my parnts for a party, my sister and i were throwing for their 25th wedding aniversary. On the drive down we had burgers for dinner in a service station, we knew we would be having service station rubbish on the way home as well. At the party that evening the meal was buffet so no veg there.

My parents were taking the kids out for lunch and i asked them to take the kids somewhere they could have vegtables for their lunch.

My sister told me this week i was annoying with my insistence on veg that my parents had had to go to many places for lunch till they found somewhere that had veg available.

Was i being unreasonable wanting my kids to have 1 vegtable portion in a weekend. My son doesn't willing eat fruit, but he does like veg.

YANBU at wanting your children to have a balanced diet but perhaps a bit OTT Given that it was a one off/special occasion. Hardly going to do any lasting damage to eat unhealthy for one weekend.

Minisoksmakehardwork · 07/02/2015 09:10

Yes, yabu for one weekend. Knowing your son doesn't eat fruit you could have picked up some pre-cut carrot sticks for a snack if it was so important. You have chosen to do motorway arrives stations to eat there and back. You could also have chosen somewhere else.

MrsTawdry · 07/02/2015 09:12

Yes YABU. Scurvy doesn't set in after one day of crappy food. Your parents were kind enough to take your children out to eat therefore you should have left it up to them where they ate. You sound over anxious regarding food.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 07/02/2015 09:13

Yes you were being daft.

It was one weekend and you probably stressed out your parents with your insistence about vegetables.

Silvercatowner · 07/02/2015 09:14

Most motorways have service stations have an M&S or similar - you could have bought a bag of carrot sticks, or a sandwich with salad. Or come off the motorway and found a place that served actual real food that you don't need a second mortgage to buy. Very unreasonable to insist on parents finding somewhere serving very when you were clearly making no effort to do the same. And kids do not expire if they do not have veg on a weekend.

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/02/2015 09:15

I can't actually think of many places that wouldn't serve some form of vegetable though so it's hardly a huge chore...where on earth were your parents looking that they had to go to "many places" to find vegetables? I'm assuming you weren't expecting an exclusively veg but instead some sort of side.

Sirzy · 07/02/2015 09:15

Yabu. If it was that important then you should have got a bag of carrots yourself. Sometimes you just need to relax about food as long as they have an overall balanced diet then a few "bad" days won't matter

Mrsstarlord · 07/02/2015 09:16

I know where you are coming from but if you were that bothered you could have gone somewhere that did veg on the way down or got some fruit juice. It was a bit of an imposition to insist that your parents needed to provide the veg when you didn't.

dhdjdbrjrkbr · 07/02/2015 09:17

Yabvu, was it really too hard to feed them some veg you bought. Most services have a pret or m n s anyway. Think this is a reverse.

Hoppinggreen · 07/02/2015 09:18

A weekend free of veg wouldn't harm them.
If your parents were being good enough to take your children out then they can feed them however they see fit ( within reason of course)
Being a bit precious if you ask me

diddl · 07/02/2015 09:20

I think a bit much to insist that your parents fed vegetables when you didn't bother!

hoppus · 07/02/2015 09:21

YABU to expect someone else to traipse around in order to find veg if you were happy to feed them service station junk yourself. Either you should have found something healthy on the way, or taken healthy snacks/packed lunch.

A one-off weekend without veg won't do any harm in the grand scheme of things anyway.

TinTinsSexySister · 07/02/2015 09:23

YABU. I am also obsessed with veg intake and in this case I would either have packed something for the car - sandwich, cucumber and carrot sticks and a banana; taken a cucumber and some tomatoes or whatever with me, or bought those kids boxes from M&S /Waitrose in the services, which always have carrot sticks or whatever on offer.

fredfredgeorgejnr · 07/02/2015 09:23

Yes, YABU, you organised the party so chose the catering, you chose the stopping points on the journey up and down, you chose the 1 veg rule, dictating to your parents how they fed your child was unreasonable.

tumbletumble · 07/02/2015 09:25

I'm all in favour of kids eating veg, but in this case YABU. If someone is kind enough to take your DC out to lunch, it's up to them to choose the venue.

cogitosum · 07/02/2015 09:25

Actually I can't think of anywhere that has no veg. McDonald's do carrot sticks and KFC do corn on the cob.

Only1scoop · 07/02/2015 09:27

Yabu....

You would have taken veg snacks or bought healthier lunch at services if you were that bothered.

Although it's easy to go out for lunch and have veg surely....

hoppus · 07/02/2015 09:30

Where did you buy your burgers? Because even mcdonalds has salad

TurnOverTheTv · 07/02/2015 09:33

They had to go to many places to find somewhere that did veg? Really? Where were these places that don't serve veg?

KindleFancy · 07/02/2015 09:33

I think you were a bit unreasonable to insist on vegetables tbh.

But, if we'd just had a day out which had consisted of crap food, I'd have probably said 'the kids ate rubbish yesterday, could you make sure they have a decent lunch?'. That could have been soup and a sandwich in a cafe or a jacket potato with salad on the side.

It's not that difficult to find something relatively decent.

TurnOverTheTv · 07/02/2015 09:34

And all the service stations I've been in don't just serve rubbish.

Only1scoop · 07/02/2015 09:36

Exactly there are burgers if you want junk but many attached to m and s or Waitrose....all seem to have a costa or bucks....where you can get something semi healthy....

Nancy66 · 07/02/2015 09:36

Yep, that sounds pretty annoying

arethereanyleftatall · 07/02/2015 10:12

Yabu. The responsibility was yours to have either packed veg before, or bought it from the service station - most services have an m&s or similar now who do veg bags.
You probably had more chance to get it at a service station - by asking your parents to in town they would have had to by pass all the fast food places and go for a proper sit down meal.

SaucyMare · 07/02/2015 10:24

Exactly as you have all said it is very easy to find places that serve healthy food, so how did they make such a huge deal out of it My husband was at their house willing to cook lunch..

Maybe my sister is right and i am a pain in the bottom.

Why didnt i force healthy food down them at the service station? i consider it a trade off doing something horrible, sitting in a car 6 hours you get to choose exactly what you want to eat. My daughter did have the only meal with veg fish, chips and... mushy peas, which my husband wouldn't even touch.
