anyone that uses table salt in food is lacking in taste

IMO the only place for table salt is in salt dough or to dye. Was just round a friends and she was seasoning a "home made" soup and poured a load in. I did my best not to raise my eyebrows but seriously even a bit of bog standard Maldon is cheap enough.

I have 6 different salts in the house, and to me table salt is not for food, no depth of flavour or hints and tones, just pure sodium!

OP posts:
ADishBestEatenCold · 05/02/2015 23:12

"You table salt lovers do know its a highly processed product where it is stripped of all its minerals just to leave you with pure sodium and nothing else."

Pure Sodium, OP?

No chlorine atoms, at all?

Are you sure?

Norland · 05/02/2015 23:13

As recommended by a chef:

I've been getting a regular supply from the street-light outside my house.

I think I am 27.639th in line to the throne.
Sadly, not the throne in this country though.

We actually DID put table salt down our driveway some ?3 years ago when we had so much snow that all the outlets had sold out of salt/grit.
I still have 1kg bags of the cheapest of cheap table salt that is veeeeeery gradually used up in cooking Grin

Are we still on salt or have we moved to street walking?

egnahc · 05/02/2015 23:20

I not the op refers to bog standard maldon- does that mean that they buy salt for their toilet?

maddening · 05/02/2015 23:24

I live near big salt mines where seddon salt comes from - my cottage was built by the salt mine owners in 1890 - you would hate it here - you can see massive mountains of the stuff when you drive past.

BIWI · 05/02/2015 23:26

I have special salt for my dishwasher. Does that make me a ponce?

Must be the invisible woman then, I've just looked.

Norland · 05/02/2015 23:27

Well BIWI, it really depends.

Does he have just the one-arm?

egnahc · 06/02/2015 00:03

Robins nest? took me a long time to get that

My ex had a health condition that made him sweat salt, it made licking him all the saltier sweeter.

I hope you collected it to offer to your friends to put in their soups

ouryve · 06/02/2015 00:27

The local jackdaws nick the salt we put on our path.

I think they might have a bit of an addiction.

Notrevealingmyidentity · 06/02/2015 00:32

Sweat is salty isn't it ? Or have I misunderstood the joke ?

Notrevealingmyidentity · 06/02/2015 00:34

I actually do have pink Himalayan salt. It's from aldi.

maras2 · 06/02/2015 00:37

I love it when the Barefoot Contessa < Ina Garten > says ' Now lots of salt.I use kosher salt ' WTF is that? Don't really care cos I love Ina (and Geoffrey)

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 06/02/2015 00:43

It's not really a joke, he had to take salt tablets daily, and frequently during hot weather, would end up in hospital if underestimated. The body needs salt and his body sweated it out in greater proportions to most. If I ran my fingers over his skin there was a fine salt all over him, if not freshly out of the shower. Although it wasn't a pleasant health condition for him to have, I did used to enjoy licking him.

egnahc · 06/02/2015 00:43

kosher salt ' WTF is that

there really is no excuse for salt ignorance. Your parents should have ensured that you had daily salt tasting sessions from the age of 3 onwards

The main difference between regular salt and kosher salt is the structure of the flakes. Chefs find that kosher salt, due to its large flake size, is easier to pick up with your fingers and spread over food.

Kosher salt will have a different texture and flavour burst, but if you allow the salt to dissolve in the food, then there really isn’t any difference compared to regular table salt.

However, kosher salt is less likely to contain additives like anti-caking agents and iodine.

Obviously this is something I have known since childhood rather than just googled Smile

Himalayan salt is harvested in Pakistan.

It is mined from the Khewra Salt Mine, the second largest salt mine in the work

It is pink because the blood of the child and women salt miners taints it- hence it cant be sold as white salt but rather pink.

He was very private about his health though, understandably, and I feel a bit shitty having kind of joked about it on here. As long as he's not cyber stalking me there'll be no consequence (relax woman, relax). We only broke up in January and I feel a bit like I've just betrayed his trust writing that, though I shouldn't as he actually DID betray my trust pre-breakup. Time to stop diverting the thread, over-thinking things, and go to bed methinks!

How on earth did I manage to live till 63 without knowing that? Shock

NeedsAsockamnesty · 06/02/2015 01:07

I've waited fucking months for a thread like this op please don't let me down I think I may never get a full nights sleep until I know the answer and I have already asked about 3/4 times and had no joy.

Black salt flakes what are they for?

I know they look pretty and all that but any particular food they go with?

I had them on mash the other day and it didn't really work for me

Oh and of it makes you more inclined to answer my question YANBU
