With my neighbour?

Katinkka · 04/02/2015 15:52

Just had a row with my neighbour who was asking my ex to fit an electric windchime in his garden. I said I didn't like the sound of it and asked if they will be noisy. He said 'yes. Really noisy'. I can't bear windchimes and have asked another neighbour previously to take some down as listening to them on a night was sending me into a homicidal rage.

He went off on one saying he can't stand my cats who crap in his garden. They're not all my cats round here! I feel like the bad guy but am I?

Even if you do what you can, having 12 cats WILL impact on the neighbor. So approaching him about his wind chimes does come across as churlish.

BMW6 · 05/02/2015 09:01

Uh oh - you're the local mad cat lady then OP.......Smile

ptumbi · 05/02/2015 09:02

Cats apparently have a 'roaming area' of up to 2KM from home, OP.
they could be crapping everywhere within that radius.

RiverTam · 05/02/2015 09:02

windchimes are the work of the devil. We asked our NDNs to take theirs down, which were right outside our bedroom window, though nowhere near their own, so they never got kept awake by them. They took them down no problem.

However, being the owner of 12 cats doesn't really put you in a very strong position, unfortunately.

Patilla · 05/02/2015 09:11

12 cats and you think wind chimes are the biggest problem for your neighbours?!

Well that's made me chuckle this morning anyway

12 of your cats shitting in his garden? I think you're getting off lightly with a wind chime. Suck it up.

sebsmummy1 · 05/02/2015 09:19

No one has that many cats. I think the OP is jangling all your wind chimes for a laugh.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 05/02/2015 09:20

If this was another thread and the op was saying she'd taken on 12 rescue cats out of the goodness of her heart everyone would be saying how kind and selfless she was. Throw in a windchime and she's suddenly selfish! Hmm

Op you perhaps should have waited to hear the windchime before complaining, it might not even be that bad.

If my neighbour had 12 cats that crapped all over my gardens, then there is no way I would entertain their request that I take down a set of windchimes. If you want consideration from neighbours, then you need to give it.

UncleT · 05/02/2015 09:44

No, James. Unless they were contained in rescue centre type conditions and not free to roam and crap, then no - I for one would still think it unfair on neighbours.

HighwayDragon · 05/02/2015 09:53

Doesn't your house smell with 12 cats?!

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 05/02/2015 10:01

The OP doesn't say the neighbour's getting a wind chime with the intention of using it to keep the cats out. We don't know that it is related at all.

A shitting cat is nowhere near as annoying. I can't hear my cat shitting. It doesn't keep me awake at night (my cat does, but it's sitting on my head, not shitting in the garden at the time). I wouldn't ever put up something that caused a nuisance like wind chimes, but not everybody is considerate.

Do I read correctly that the neighbour was asking your ex to fit the wind chime for him? Well you can at least tell ask your ex not to do it!

UncleT · 05/02/2015 10:03

That's correct Rubbish - a sitting cat might not be as annoying. How about a dozen shitting cats though?

Katinkka · 05/02/2015 10:03

No it doesn't smell. Why would it if they're all doing their business outside? Like I said, it's a big house so it's not too bad but I didn't want this many cats. I used to have 5 and was happy with that but there's a huge problem round here with stray cats. Recently one house was cleared and 15 cats were put down. I took one but a neigbour (one of the nice ones) took it in the end. What can I do when someone brings me a cat and the rescues wont take it because they're full? If anyone wants a cat in the Hull area, all my cats are wormed, flead, vaccinated and neutured. But really, they have a home. THere are so many cats that don't.

You can say 'sorry I have too many already, you'll need to ask someone else' - because that's the truth.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 05/02/2015 10:05

"If you have 12 cats, even though you do all you can to keep their poo in your own garden and give your neighbours devices to help repel the cats from their gardens, your neighbours are still perfectly entitled to run a cannabis plantation, have weekly raves, hire out their roof as a rocket launch pad, blow fag smoke directly in your window while flicking you the finger and cover their windows with posters of Ed Milliband."

MrsTawdry · 05/02/2015 10:06

I love windchimes but would NEVER have them outside as I know some people hate the noise. Knowing I might be upsetting others would make me anxious!

MidniteScribbler · 05/02/2015 10:06

Why would it if they're all doing their business outside?

Yes, on other people's property. I bet you wouldn't have 12 cats if you had to clean up their shit yourself.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 05/02/2015 10:06

It's possible all 12 cats take a dump simultaneously outside the neighbour's bedroom window at 3am while harmonising Let It Go, but it's unlikely.

Katinkka · 05/02/2015 10:08

It's give and take too isn't it. The neighbours dog is always barking and they let it out right by my bedroom window. I've never said anything about it because it's usually brief. Windchimes on the other hand, tinkle all night and I can't bear it. People have parties, park inconsideratly, block my drive sometimes, kids screaming, etc etc. I don't usually say anything to anyone about anything, mainly due to my having the cats but I really hate windchimes and couldn't stop myself.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 05/02/2015 10:10

Now, now, Midnite - "I bet you wouldn't have 12 cats if you had to clean up their shit yourself."

Surely you know you're making things up as you will have read where the OP says:

"the cats mostly crap in my own garden. I know, cause I clean it up"

UncleT · 05/02/2015 10:12

Yeah, far more likely that they all take it in turns day in, day out to crap in the garden - that's much better, obviously.

On a serious note, if there's a noise nuisance during the night you can of course involve environmental health to determine whether it constitutes a statutory nuisance or not.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 05/02/2015 10:14

UncleT it doesn't create any form of noise disturbance, which I maintain is far worse than cat shit in the garden. And the OP has said, I will quote her again: "the cats mostly crap in my own garden. I know, cause I clean it up".
