I'm eating some sandwiches and I've had to use some really shitty bread that my DH purchased and it's frankly ruining my lunch Grin

I'm more than happy to buy own shop brands but I really do believe that some things have to be the 'real thing' and I will not buy cheaper versions to try and get a better deal.

My list includes cereal, nice bread, tea bags, Nutella and pasta sauces Grin

What about every one else??

OP posts:

Because a few jars or tins in your cupboards does not mean you don't like "naice" food.

GraysAnalogy · 04/02/2015 14:09

Yates Greer Sausages.

MarianneM · 04/02/2015 14:10

"OP you can't be a foodie and like processed pasta sauce.

It is all rank."

"sorry it makes me laugh when people who describe themselves as 'food snobs' are fussy about which tin of baked beans they have. surely the terms 'food snob' and 'baked beans' simply cancel themselves out, no?"

Indeed.

All ready made pasta sauces are vile. How difficult is it to make a simple pasta sauce yourself?

SunnyBaudelaire · 04/02/2015 14:10

"Foodie
A douchebag who likes food.
Douchebag - "I'm a big foodie."
Non-doucher - "Really? I like food too, but I'm not a tool"
so you are calling yourself a douchebag as well? LOL

Ragwort · 04/02/2015 14:11

I readily admit that I am a 'brand snob' rather than a 'food snob' Grin.

As if anyone cares anyway.

GraysAnalogy · 04/02/2015 14:13

I hate most ready made sauces like curry and pasta.

PrimalLass · 04/02/2015 14:13

Nope. Just a funny definition of people who are silly about these things.

It's not hard to make a pasts sauce. Occasionally I indulge my lazy side and buy a jar (and only that one, unless you count pesto, which is used daily in our house). Doesn't mean I live on cheesy pasta from a box...

OnlyLovers · 04/02/2015 14:19

I think all those saying 'How hard can it be to make your own ' are being snobbier than those who have brand preferences, TBH.

Why does something have to be 'hard' to make it OK for you to buy rather than make it? I can make most foods for myself pretty easily, but sometimes I like to buy them ready-made too. Is that really a problem? Does it really need sneering at or judging?

minipie · 04/02/2015 14:19

Oh god millions. But mostly it's not about brands, it's about fresh and natural rather than processed and with additives.

Meat: decent quality, ideally organic and ideally from butcher/farm shop (though some supermarket meat is decent).

Butter: proper butter not a "spread", unsalted, ideally President.
Bread: proper loaf with a crust, unsliced, not the plastic wrapped stuff.
No jarred sauces for pasta, stir fry, fajitas etc. Though we do buy stuffed pasta.
Some cereals: own brand cornflakes are always disappointing.
Chocolate: dark, and not Cadbury/Nestle.
Pasta: good durum wheat, italian brands (and not Barilla)
Proper ground coffee not instant coffee.

Mayo: fresh mayo only (the stuff that's yellow and goes off quickly), no Hellmans.

We spend a fortune on food Blush.

Having said all that I have lots of guilty pleasures which go completely the other way! I like plastic cheese slices, frankfurters, Supernoodles, baked beans and "plastic bread" toast with salted butter. I know these are total junk but I like them anyway... I'd probably like jarred pasta sauces too, I just don't want to eat the additives.

Oh and obviously I would eat anything if served as a guest.

MarianneM · 04/02/2015 14:25

"I think all those saying 'How hard can it be to make your own ' are being snobbier than those who have brand preferences, TBH."

Well it is a thread about food snobbery, no?

It is bizarre to have a poster say "I'm a huge food snob" and then go on to list which sliced bread, baked bean or ready pasta sauce they like best.

I always thought people in this country really don't know how to eat properly.

SunnyBaudelaire · 04/02/2015 14:26

I agree Marianne, they really don't.

bigbluestars · 04/02/2015 14:29

I agree too Marianne.

PrimalLass · 04/02/2015 14:29

The thread is about brand snobbery really.

bigbluestars · 04/02/2015 14:30

I would rather eat cheese and crackers for dinner than a jarred sauce.

WhereIsMyFurryHat · 04/02/2015 14:32

I cannot stand the term 'foodie', might as well say twat instead.

PrimalLass · 04/02/2015 14:32

I always thought people in this country really don't know how to eat properly.

What, all of them?

I would rather eat cheese and crackers for dinner than a jarred sauce.

Home-made and unprocessed, I assume?

bigbluestars · 04/02/2015 14:33

"The thread is about brand snobbery really."

Which has nothing to do with good food really.

drbonnieblossman · 04/02/2015 14:34

Meat from butcher
Bread from baker

Jam - must be Tiptree. That awful Bon Maman crap fools no-one with its printed gingham lid. And as for Hartleys, do people actually eat it? It's horrid.

PrimalLass · 04/02/2015 14:38

I love St Dalfour jam. Or my mum's, or MIL's.

drbonnieblossman · 04/02/2015 15:05

primal yes homemade jam is the best isn't it. Growing up we had various fruit trees in ours and grandparents gardens so there was always a cupboard full of old Nescafé which we always pronounced 'Nescafé' because back then, it was jars with plum, damson, gooseberry and rhubarb.

Happy days

drbonnieblossman · 04/02/2015 15:05

Arghhhh 'pronounced nescaff'

OnlyLovers · 04/02/2015 15:08

Marianne, it's the judging I don't like. No one is really judging each other on which butter or chocolate or whatever they prefer, but the disappearing comments about how easy it is to just whip up your own food from scratch are very judgmental, IMO.

And as for I always thought people in this country really don't know how to eat properly Shock, WTF? Sweeping statement much? You and the little chorus agreeing with you ought to be embarrassed.

SunnyBaudelaire · 04/02/2015 15:12

"I always thought people in this country really don't know how to eat properly"
Well I am sorry but I have lived or stayed in quite a few other countries and have never seen a ready meal or indeed been offered spaghetti with margarine and raw garlic. (true) Or indeed met anyone who thought that a tin of Heinz beans was worth driving up and down the costas for. LOL.

MarianneM · 04/02/2015 15:13

Don't mind my "disappearing comments" OnlyLovers ;)

bigbluestars · 04/02/2015 15:15

I don't get then how someone can be "snobbish" about a jar of pasta sauce.

And consequently don't really get this thread.
