To dislike the warburtons thins advert

Aibu to feel that there really was no reason to take the piss out of the "fat" woman in the office who the man in the advert no longer has to speak to now he is slim and surrounded by the slim office hotties? I know it's just an ad but it's so unnecessarily unpleasant.

I hate this advert, too. I don't see it the same way as nomama! But I do agree that there is a huge amount of completely unnecessary lazy sexism in adverts, against men and women.

missusdaly · 01/02/2015 10:58

I don't see the guys weight change at all in the ad, don't think that's a part of it. He wants to hang out with the cool kids, the cool kids don't want him.

windchime · 01/02/2015 12:19

I didn't see her as fat or older; just rather aggressive and demanding that he join her at the table. and if she is fat then my diet starts now

firesidechat · 01/02/2015 12:48

I think I've only seen it once.

My impressioon was that he was loving the young pretty ones all wanting a taste of his sandwich, but "oh no, look, the unattractive, fat women wants some too". The horror of it!

It isn't a very nice advert and the thins look horrible. Never buy Warburtons bread.

firesidechat · 01/02/2015 12:49

I'm going to watch it again and see if I feel the same.

firesidechat · 01/02/2015 12:59

Ok, well she's not especially fat, but definitely the plain jane stereotype - plump, frumpy clothes, lank hair and glasses.

He doesn't look like he realises at all that they only want his baps and the plain one looks dominant and demanding rather than caring.

drudgetrudy · 01/02/2015 13:03

Yeah! Horrible advert-throwback to the 70s.
Must make sure I don't buy warburton's thins(will avoid their bread too).

Pipbin · 01/02/2015 13:11

I thought the same although I was upset by her having glasses and not being as pretty rather than her being 'fat'.
I do think we should all say something.

GatoradeMeBitch · 01/02/2015 15:35

I'm glad I found out about this now because I'd added those to the shopping list. Firmly struck off now. They probably tasted crap anyway!

Nomama · 01/02/2015 15:39

Found what, Gatorade?

Found that, when asked, 100 women couldn't agree what an advert was about?

drudgetrudy · 01/02/2015 16:18

Well 99 out of 100 women agreed!
He recoils from the "less attractive" woman.

Don't know who writes some of the adverts we see but they aren't very good at it.

Pipbin · 01/02/2015 17:36

The annoying thing is that the rest of the advert is fine. If they just missed that bit of the 'plain' woman there would be nothing wrong with it really.

TheCunnyFunt · 01/02/2015 17:53

I don't understand where OP got 'he used to be fat and now he's thin' from? He's only ever shown as thin Confused

I see it as the young pretty women admiring his sandwich thins and then when they've got their own they don't need to admire his anymore. The fat lady pushes out a chair next to her and he's like 'ew, no thanks.'

borisgudanov · 01/02/2015 17:58

It's enough to stop me buying their products.

GatoradeMeBitch · 01/02/2015 19:08

I don't need 100 women to agree Nomama. I watched it and I don't like it. I don't actually need anyone's permission to take something off my shopping list!

My take is that a smarmy bloke has women all over him because they are inexplicably fascinated with his sandwich, then when they discover his 'secret' and make their own they have no more interest. One lady is still interested, but she's plain and fat AND predatory, so he fear grins at her in horror.

It's very stupid marketing for a brand when most household shopping is still done by women, and more than half of British women are overweight...

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/02/2015 19:16

I've always thought it was a stupid advert but never say any of that when I watched it. I thought it was about a single man who has discovered the Warburton 'thins' and the women were accepting him as 'one of them'... didn't see any 'sparks' from him or them or any of them.

I don't like that bread - love the Warburton 'honey wheat' loaf though, my new favourite!

maddening · 01/02/2015 19:18

Thecunny - perhaps I misinterpreted the ad - I got that he wanted to lose weight and switched to warburtons thins - though didn't actually say he used to be fat just that he wanted to lose weight.

The "ew no thanks" is the bit that is unnecessary imo.

You might have the wrong end of the stick there maddenly. It just says something about becoming a new man, as in attractive to women because of his amazing sandwiches.

They are called thins because of the bread shape not because they help you lose weight.

firesidechat · 01/02/2015 19:31

maddening. Sorry. Blush

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/02/2015 19:54

I thought it was about him being a single dad and his children having these 'thins' for sandwiches so he does too?

Adverts are obviously wasted on me Blush

KillmeNow · 01/02/2015 19:56

When I first saw this advert I understood that the man was horrified at he come on from the fat/ugly/frumpy /bespectacled woman at the end even though she was the only one to still 'want' him.I couldn't understand what the advert was trying to tell me and as the idea of the thins seemed to be a very expensive way of selling me 6 slices of bread I dismissed the advert from my mind.

On reading this thread I watched the advert again to see if I could put a different slant on it . But Im afraid the end result is the same .Its a horrid advert that isnt doing a good job of selling the product.

And that rictus grin of the man (David apparently) at the end tells me he is horrified at the womans invitation to join him as she eats her own thins sandwich.

jonicomelately · 01/02/2015 20:14

They are advertised as only having 100 calories so they are saying they are a weight loss product aren't they Confused

TwinkieTwinkle · 01/02/2015 20:57

I don't get the indignation of people here. It's an advert! Goodness me...

Pipbin · 01/02/2015 21:13

And page 3 is just some tits.................

drudgetrudy · 01/02/2015 21:21

Yes TwinkleTwinkle its an advert-a nasty misogynistic one, and childish at that. Not exactly indignant but it has decided me not to by this company's products for now.
