To wonder what my neighbour was doing?

I was working from home today. About 10 a.m. I was on the phone upstairs and I saw my NDN peering through our downstairs window. She was there for a few minutes then she moved round to a bit of the house I can't see from upstairs. I finished my phone call and came down to look for her, but she'd gone. I went round to her house and said 'I saw you just came over, sorry I missed you, is everything OK?' She flatly denied that she'd been round to ours, and it was a bit awkward, so I said that I must have been mistaken, but I know it was definitely her. I figured maybe she had heard noise in our house, and was just checking for burglars, but was embarrassed in case I thought she was snooping. I mentioned it to my husband when he got home from work tonight, and he said that last week he came home at lunchtime and saw the same neighbour 'hot-footing it' over the low wall that divides our houses and rushing into her house. He thought it was a bit odd, but not worth mentioning. I'm sure it's nothing sinister, but I am just a bit baffled. We are reasonably friendly, we moved in two years ago and she's been round to ours for coffee quite a few times, so I can't see that our house would hold any great mystery to her. AIBU to think this is a bit odd?

'What possible excuse could she have made?'

I thought I heard something and wanted to check everything was OK.

I was settling an argument with DH, he said your sofa was green and I thought it was brown.

I know you work from home and wanted to make sure you weren't just sitting watching Jezza Kyle.

The possibilities are endless.

Anything other than deny it when the OP's just said she caught her looking in the window. I presume the OP caught her on the hop and her mind went blank so she went with the least believable excuse.

She's probably kicking herself now and cringing at what she said.

Although her denial caught you on the hop too OP, and instead of insisting you'd seen her clear as day you went along with it, what made you decide not to challenge her with a 'Uh, yes you fucking did I just fucking saw you do it y'cheeky mare'?

cozietoesie · 30/01/2015 23:31

She was snooping - plain snooping is all. Is there anything you could leave in plain view which might be potentially............risque, say? I couldn't resist doing that myself.

Momagain1 · 30/01/2015 23:31

I wonder if she is peeping through any other neighbors windows?

Quantumlump · 30/01/2015 23:38

Well, thank you all. I am off to bed now, but I shall try to get a day at home for a stake-out next week and report back. Failing that, I will install a sex-swing in the dining room to give her something to look at.

Furry handcuffs as well - she might not recognise what the swing is !

peggyundercrackers · 30/01/2015 23:43

You need to get to the bottom of it, something's not right... I think if it happened once I would let it go but not if its been twice.

Pumpkinette · 30/01/2015 23:44

Has she been over to ask about a delivery recently?

Maybe someone has taken in a delivery for her but she hasn't got it yet. If you normally take in deliveries for her she might think you've taken it in but kept it for yourself. She could be spying when she thinks you are out to see if she can see whatever it is in your house ....... Or she's just completely bonkers.

Next time you're away for a night. Leave an axe (large one) propped up against a wall or door. Wink

Marking place for odd neighbour updates. Intriguing!

Hubby is often home when you are not, she is often around when you are not ????
that's a red line. ltb

No idea what she may have been doing but reminded me of something DP saw recently.

He owns a building firm and went to see a house near Wadhurst. He said he thought they might be having problems with nosy neighbours as there were signs stuck to the inside of every downstairs window saying "We have cameras and record everything so we can see you looking in."

Felt quite sad for them that they had to have signs up and cameras in their home to catch people peering in.

AimlesslyPurposeful · 30/01/2015 23:58

Pumpkinette may well have it!

Perhaps she was expecting a piece of furniture or large electrical item that hasn't turned up and thinks you have it?

seaoflove · 31/01/2015 00:02

It can't be a parcel - you would ASK your neighbour if they'd received anything, before checking their house for evidence of theft!

Place marking

Rainbunny · 31/01/2015 00:15

Well chances are that she is just very nosy and likes seeing what her neighbours' houses are like inside, but then again...

Do you always lock your door when you're out? When I was a child we moved into a new house and quickly my mum noticed things being moved around but assumed it was one of us. This went on for months until one day our neighbour asked if our DGM was enjoying her stay? Well our DGM had never visited so my DM asked why she thought she was and it turned out that our neighbour saw an old woman looking out from an upstairs windows the day before. With a bit of extra amateur snooping my parents finally realised that the neighbour on the otherside, an old lady with some degree of dementia who lived with her son, was coming into our house during the day and doing who knows what. I don't think she ever took anything, just made herself at home and rearranged stuff. It still felt creepy as my parents were not in the habit of leaving the door unlocked so they wondered how she was getting in, not to mention that the son she lived with was a nasty piece of work. Locks were changed pronto...

Your neighbour is hopefully just appreciating your decor.... I will admit I love running around my neighbourhood in the evening - I am guilty of checking out people's living rooms!

AimlesslyPurposeful · 31/01/2015 00:52

seaoflove - "It can't be a parcel - you would ASK your neighbour if they'd received anything, before checking their house for evidence of theft!"

I think most of us would but someone who'd convinced themselves that their neighbour had pinched their 54 inch smart tv delivery might not want to give the neighbour prior warning of their suspicions and the chance to hide the evidence.

You don't happen to have a new telly do you OP? Wink

Mouthfulofquiz · 31/01/2015 00:58

I think you need a cheap cc tv camera!
