To think this shop assistant was in the wrong?

Was in my local supermarket today. Went to pay, my daughter went to get a bag to put our items in and the assistant snapped at her, 'Please don't mess with my stuff'. I didn't say anything and paid, keen to get away from the grumpy lady behind the till. Then came the weird bit. DD (3) likes to hold till receipts after we've been shopping. She asked me if she could have it and I said yes, and I fully expected the assistant to give it to her. She wasn't handing it to me anyway - sort of holding it in front of DD. She asked her to say please. DD did. Then she asked her to say please again, but this time more loudly. DD was getting confused and started to cry. Grumpy till lady then reluctantly gave the receipt to DD and started going on about how she hadn't said please.

So - AIBU to think it wasn't her place to chastise my child? She certainly wouldn't have made me beg for the receipt and say please repeatedly! In the event, as we left, I said, firmly and politely, 'Next time, please don't discipline my child. That's my job and not yours.' And then we left, me telling DD that the lady was clearly in a bad mood (out of earshot). I'm all for good manners, it was just the nasty, goady way she was with DD that put my back up.

Yanbu. What a nasty woman. I'd have been livid.

fightorflight I think t's incredibly unfair to compare what I described at the express tills as anything like what you're doing with your lady - that's very different.

I think there is a time and a place for things and a toddler learning independence and money handling skills at an express checkout would annoy me, if that makes me impatient thenso be it.

I cannot bear other people's children, so I would have ignored him too.

Well that's OK if you wouldn't mind someone blanking your child if they just said hello.

But you didn't actually describe what you see at the express tills Banana. If the parents are teaching money handling skills then it's education, not entertainment.

Unless all the tills have toddlers at them then another till will become free fairly quickly.

I find that people with loose fruit that has to be weighed, a couple of artisan rolls that need to be looked up and something with a randomly crinkled barcode hold me up far more frequently than mums & toddlers.

I'm often the one stood there with the till shouting hatred at me. "Please place the item in the bagging area" (it's already there) "please wait for assistance" etc. The worst is when you're buying a bottle of wine and have to wait for eternity for someone to come along and swipe their store card before you can pack it. I've stopped going through express tills if I have alcohol as I hate it when they press the 'clearly a wrinkled old fart way above the age of 21' button.

hestialou · 27/01/2015 21:22

Hmmm, so are we supposed to say please when expecting a receipt? I don't and guess you don't so child only copying your behaviour. I say thanks afterwards so shop assistant in the wrong

Aww fight.

I still hate that button pressing mind you, and am nearly 43.

Combine where do you think is the correct time and place then to teach toddlers or small children money handling skills or independence? I ask as all our nurseries take the kids to the supermarket express tills (is this just a Scottish thing?).

Even Mr Tumble aka Justin has programmes where he takes children to the shops to teach them money handling skills and promote independence.

fight Grin at crinkly bar codes.

Maybe there are a lot of people who should take advantage of online shopping Smile
