It's sweet, but a bit of a non-story and probably something of a stealth boast Wink

I knew straight away who you meant but I'm not sure I agree OP. I mean, it is quite an unusual thing that the man did, though I don't think I'd go so far as wanting to trace him. He's probably one of those people on a mission to do a nice thing every day or something and is running out of ideas Wink.

It may be a stealth boast (thought that too!) but I don't blame her for being pleased that someone noticed her little boy being well-behaved. A stranger came up to me at a wedding once and congratulated me on how well my children had sat through the speeches and I was chuffed to bits (though might have been more relief because ds is severely autistic and I was more used to judgy stares).

MoanCollins · 26/01/2015 18:15

I think it's really nice.

shovetheholly · 26/01/2015 18:16

I actually read this as a horrible story. The person who passed the note and the fiver is presumably one of those intolerant individuals who tuts and eye-rolls through any perceived misbehaviour on the part of other parents and children.

The idea that you are entitled to comment on these things - and pay someone for their 'good behaviour'! - is intrusive. There could be all kinds of reasons for a parent acting in a way that you disapprove of, of which you are completely unaware.

Blue2014 · 26/01/2015 18:20

I think it's quite sad that people only seem to deem a story as news worthy it's bad news? If more of these stories came out every day, maybe we would know more about the kindness in the world rather than the reported constant horrors

kissmethere · 26/01/2015 18:22

Jealous at all??
Yabu

Nerf · 26/01/2015 18:22

But this isn't news! Older man passes note to young mum. Whoopee.

HerRoyalNotness · 26/01/2015 18:23

I think we should read more of 'catching people being well behaved' Beats all the other depressing shite the papers are full of.

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 26/01/2015 18:25

It's a bit of a non story really IMO and she's 23 so hardly a 'young mum'.

I'm sure is a fab mum with a lovely little boy but I do find the whole thing a bit odd.

krolletRodtHar · 26/01/2015 18:29

exactly what I thought OP Wine I didn't want to be the first to say it though, but you're right. and I'll go one further, the man who wrote the letter wouldn't have noticed her son's good manners if she weren't so pretty. He sounds dubious imo. I'm sure hundreds of good manner children of very ordinary looking mothers (and parents) have completely escaped his attention.

PurpleSwift · 26/01/2015 18:31

I think it's a ridiculous 'news' story. Tbh I think it lowers what a genuinely nice thing it was.

ifgrandmahadawilly · 26/01/2015 18:38

Yep, Yanbu.

Also, the guy who wrote this note was being massively patronising.

CundtBake · 26/01/2015 18:42

Well I'm clearly a huge bitch but I'm the same age as her and I'd feel so patronised if a stranger felt the need to give me £5 for displaying basic manners in public.

hazeyjane · 26/01/2015 18:42

I am looking forward to posing for a photo for, what I hope, will be tomorrows story.....

'knackered looking, grey faced, mature, mum of 3 doesn't get handed anything but gets multiple eye rolls, tuts and mutters as she fails spectacularly to keep her screechy boy quiet, despite best efforts to cajole and entertain her son, onlookers say, 'mothers today are really crap aren't they?'

...... except it wouldn't make the news because it's a daily bloody occurence.

Eastwickwitch · 26/01/2015 18:45

She must've gone to the papers with the story. All very nice but wanting to search him out to say thank you, all a bit OTT.

Nerf · 26/01/2015 18:46

Some bloke on her FB page has added that he was also on the train and thought she was brilliant (or words to that effect) I only looked to see if she was an aspiring glamour model or some such.

TheFairyCaravan · 26/01/2015 18:48

She's been on Daybreak and Loose Women today. She is certainly getting the most out of that fiver!

I think it is a slow news day personally.

PuppyMonkey · 26/01/2015 18:51

I was chortling this morning when she was on GMTV and they also had an intrepid reporter in situ live at a railway station in Bristol or Plymouth or wherever it was on the premise they might find the note writer. FFS. Grin

Tryharder · 26/01/2015 18:52

An American woman stopped me on Oxford Street last year as I was walking down with DS1 and DS2 behind me pulling our suitcase. She said how lovely and brave(!) they were.

RING THE DAILY MAIL SOMEONE

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 26/01/2015 18:52

I'm struggling to see how a sleeping child and him being quiet translates into her being brilliant. What exactly was she doing on that train? I'm sure she's a very good mum but this is kind of insulting to the millions of mums put there who do the same everyday!!!

gingerbreadmam · 26/01/2015 18:52

i had a smirk to myself yesterday when it appeared on the dm. read it, read something else, looked again and they had changed the pic to one where i assume someone decided she looked more attrctive.

nice story though.

girliefriend · 26/01/2015 19:00

I saw her on Loose Women and thought she seemed nice but was taken back to when dd was 2yo and we travelled back on the train from York to Somerset. The first 3 hours she was very good but the last 2 Shock

I think watching someone parenting on a short train journey probably doesn't give you a very accurate picture of the childs behaviour overall!!

FamilyAdventure · 26/01/2015 19:04

I didn't say she only got the note because she was glam, I said it only made the news because there was a glam picture to go with it. If she'd been a man or less attractive, I'd like to think she'd still have received the note, if the man was impressed with her child, but I don't think it would be on the BBC.

OP posts:
Bakeoffcakes · 26/01/2015 19:08

I though it was a lovely story amongst all the horrible stuff that's going on around the world.

SwedishEdith · 26/01/2015 19:13

How do we know it was a bloke? And, yes, I read it as some grumpy judging type as well. I knew exactly what story it was from the thread title.

anothernumberone · 26/01/2015 19:16

I thought it was the biggest non story ever before I ever saw a picture. Sure she seems like a very nice lady but for God's sake how is this news.
