Because it messes with their heads?

I recently bought one massively-reduced Hobbs dress in a sale, and now I can't walk into H&M without feeling disgusted by the lack of lining and poor tailoring.

I've I'd just known my place in the first instance, I'd still be quite happy.

If, not I've. Clearly my grammar's gone since I went into H&M, too.

Try charity shops. I got a lovely top from Coast for £2 and a Lakeland top for £1. Smile

IAmAllImportant · 26/01/2015 13:54

It really does not do one any good to try to rise above one's station.

Now, back in the gutter with you!

Latara · 26/01/2015 13:57

I understand exactly what you mean, my one rich friend drags me in Phase Eight & Crew & Joules etc etc and the quality of the clothes IS amazing, especially the blouses in Crew....

But I did get a dress in September from Fat Face (which is too expensive for me) and it had THREE holes in it! Also I have to stretch it every time I wash it. Whereas my New Look dresses just wash easily & are quite good quality, same with my Dorothy Perkins clothes.

My Mum bought a skirt in Monsoon because she had a voucher & found the hem was coming down & not sewn properly.
However her Asda skirts have lasted years.

Don't judge all cheap clothes by H&M standards & all posh clothes by Hobbs' standards - H&M quality is quite poor IMO & the materials aren't great plus the clothes all look like they need a press. But New Look for example is really good.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 26/01/2015 13:58

Totally agree with you. I'm in the same boat, a couple of nice, well cut items of clothing in my wardrobe and I now hate the stuff my Primark/ Asda budget can afford. I was happy shopping cheaply before! Grin

TheGirlFromIpanema · 26/01/2015 13:58

I just pretend I am posh-for-the-day if I am wearing a dress with a lining Grin
Doesn't everyone?!

PureMorning · 26/01/2015 14:00

Its bedding for me.
I bought very expensive, high thread count bedding back when me and dp were child free and living with his mum. Its like sleeping in a cloud being touched up by angels singing you lullabies

13 years later ds'1 rats chewed it all up and ive replaced with argos £14:99 bed set

Its not the same, no clouds, no angels Sad

Iggly · 26/01/2015 14:02

Yanbu

Or use eBay/charity shops to get that fix.

notnaice · 26/01/2015 14:07

I came on to read the flaming I thought you were going to get. But yes I agree with you. And I also think

It's awful when you see people dressed to the nines in labels and it is obvious they waste tons of money on said labels when they are making do or going with out in other areas of their life. Why proritise labels? Pointless...

wishmiplass · 26/01/2015 14:07

Pure

I don't think I could ever lower my standards quite so far in terms of my bedding. I'm literally Shock

DD has the minging Argos bedset.

meglet · 26/01/2015 14:09

ha ha, yanbu.

can I add 'people who are not posh should not browse in a real perfume shop'.

you try smelling mass market Chanel or even Tom Ford after you've experienced Terry De Gunzberg and Annick Goutal. High Street perfume is meh in comparison.

AlorsMeh · 26/01/2015 14:09

Buy online - House of Fraser does regular flash sales and blue cross sales on good quality labels. I havent paid full price on a Hobbs or Phase eight dress in yonks.

BeCool · 26/01/2015 14:14

Bedding for me too - I will never buy Argos, I use my posh high thread count bedding until it falls to bits and then buy new posh ones in the sales.

And perfume too - I generally buy boutique perfumes now, but I have far fewer at any one time.

stealthsquiggle · 26/01/2015 14:14

My DC moaned about the difference between our bedding and theirs until I got them decent bedding too to get them out of my bloody bed Angry

On the plus side, they won't grow out of it anytime soon.

As for clothes, I increasingly shop on eBay for decent brands precisely because of this problem.

wishmiplass · 26/01/2015 14:19

Yes - DD wising up to nice bedding now. I've told her, you can't have 100% Cotton and Disney at the same time.

squoosh · 26/01/2015 14:20

I'm dressed as Elizabeth I today, including the orb and sceptre. I like to posh things up on a Monday.

ouryve · 26/01/2015 14:21

Try making your own clothes.

That really makes you turn your nose up in disgust at so much!

hestialou · 26/01/2015 14:22

If like lined clothes, just buy underslips, makes a big difference to cheaper dresses, esp jersey ones

youmakemydreams · 26/01/2015 14:23

YANBU, I bought a Coast dress in Debenhams sale for £19 reduced from £95. DP and I are going to a weeding in April and I plan to wear it then. The only thing is I now feel the need to accessorise with shoes I cannot afford as anything else will just look awful.

And as per Latara's post, I often think "they're asking £90 for that?"

Even quite pricey things are often cut and finished badly, in dodgy fabrics. When I was a kid, my mum taught me to scrunch something in my hand to get an idea of how it would look after being worn/sat in for a few hours. Also to not be too careful about snaggly rings and fingernails (particularly with towels). Unfortunately, there's no instant test for how easily a fabric will pill, but buying something in a sale that's been moved around on a hanger a bit often reveals a degree of bobbliness that puts me right off because if it looks old for sitting around a shop/stock room for a few weeks, what the hell is it going to look like the first time it's been worn and washed?

BeCool · 26/01/2015 14:32

avoid lambswool - looks like shit after one wear. majorly bobbly.

onemiddlefinger · 26/01/2015 14:47

I agree, once you open that door it's very hard to go back.

I always buy my bedding from www.kingofcotton.co.uk/ I find it really good value and excellent quality (I feel bad for our guest who have to use our old John Lewis bedding that doesn't even come close...)

Is H&M posh?
