AIBU to scoot to work?

Allegrogirl · 26/01/2015 10:00

I am currently walking 20 minutes each way to work to avoid a daily parking charge and get a bit fitter. DH has suggested I get a fold up bike to save time but I reckon by the time I've unfolded/folded and found somewhere to store at work I won't save any time. I've seen one women scooting and that seems sensible but I'm a bit self conscious Blush.

A bicycle is not a scooter. It's not illegal any more than running on the pavement is.

Hopelass · 26/01/2015 19:37

My mum scoots to work on her adult scooter and loves it. She's 63! She doesn't care what other people think Smile

jazzandh · 26/01/2015 19:39

Yep we all have scooters here......who cares what anyone thinks? Quick and easy......

(Older Mum here too)

fragglemama · 26/01/2015 19:41

My girls have these,

They go quicker than a microscooter and apparently are so much more fun.

Lovelydiscusfish · 26/01/2015 19:42

My db's partner has got a grown-up scooter - she uses it to get around in London. I would bloody love one for scooting around my village!

dalekanium · 26/01/2015 19:47

I commute on one, have done for years. And for exactly the same reason. Expensive to park and a folding bike is a pita.

I love mine. I have a hudora big wheel, and lust after the pneumatic tyre, disc brake version.

According to the Highway Code, you should scoot on the pavement. You cannot be prosecuted for this. Though I guess you might be done under some public order offence if you were out of control or dangerously fast. You should give way to pedestrians.

I scoot in central London, and a county town. I have had no problems in either, if there is a cycle lane I sometimes scoot in that, if I aren't obstructing cyclists. Have taken the scooter on trains, buses and the tube.
The most hassle I have had is the odd group of school kids laughing as I pass.

I have front and rear lights and a bell. A bell is necessary imo.

dalekanium · 26/01/2015 19:49

And you need to use both legs, otherwise you will end up lopsided Grin

Blueundies · 26/01/2015 20:10

I always scoot on the pavement as do all the kids. No one has ever mentioned to do anything else. If it's busy I slow down and go round people - simple

LongHardStare · 26/01/2015 20:34

YANBU and please do. The more people that do it now, the less controversial it will be when I decide to do the same at some point.

I don't want to take my life into my hands cycling in London and there are no rules about scooting on the pavement. Presumably you won't be going super fast or biffing into people like a toddler.

whothehellknows · 26/01/2015 20:38

Has anyone tried one of the V-shaped drifting scooters? I thought those might eliminate the risk of lopsidedness, but I suppose they would take more pavement space too.

AndHarry · 26/01/2015 20:41

YANBU. I can't wait until DS is big enough for a Maxi Micro and I can scoot home on it!

Kasterborous · 26/01/2015 20:43

Yes you should do it, will be great fun. I would love a micro scooter Grin

Muddlewitch · 26/01/2015 21:08

I really want to do this.

You go first though Grin

I dunno movingonupmoving...
I want OP to be able to scoot and I feel like a mean spoilsport but I understand the police can decide to treat a scooter in the same way as a bike.

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 26/01/2015 22:47

I see them all the time and some people go too fast and it is dangerous. I've only seen one accident where an ambulance had to be called - guy on a scooter going way too fast ended up knocking over an old lady. Not nice.

So just be careful and bear in mind if you are going fast it isn't so easy to stop.

I ride my son's scooter home after the school run...

JakeShit · 27/01/2015 00:47

I used to use one when the kids were using theirs. It was a proper adult one with proper 20/25 (?) cm tires and brakes. Its really fast. I don't use it now but it's one of the few things I've held on to. I don't understand why rollerblades are ok when scooters aren't.

If loads of us use them then eventually we won't look silly... Smile

SkilledatSkiving · 27/01/2015 00:57

I think this should definitely become a thing.

I'd probably laugh a bit to myself if I saw an adult scooting to work, but only because I've not seen it yet & it does sound funny. But why not? The more that do it, the better.

my2centsis · 27/01/2015 03:31

I'm in two minds, it does sound very sensible for you to do this, but on the other hand adults and scooters to me personally look rediculous and I'm very ashamed to say myself and several other people I know think it looks rediculous. But in saying that Op if it's going to be in your favour I say go for it and who cares what others think

thewigglywig · 27/01/2015 11:33

My DH has suggested I get heelys to cut down my 25min walk at the other end of my 90min train journey. The tube is too much of a faff, and DD(8) loves hers. Hmmm .....

OTheHugeManatee · 27/01/2015 12:13

YABU, every time I see an adult on a scooter I think 'twat'.

I see I'm in a minority here though Hmm

MrsJamin · 28/01/2015 21:37

I once had to scoot home from picking up my youngest, using my eldest's scooter, and even though I was very self-conscious, it was good fun! And much quicker. I keep deliberating over getting one as at the moment I am the slowest, my boys will scoot and then stop and wait for me to catch up. If we all scooted it would take probably a third less time to get to school.

Me and DS2 scooter race to school to pick up DS1, DS2 is utterly, utterly crap at walking and it's the only way to get anywhere at all with him. I hand the scooter over to DS1 for the return journey.

I am fully aware I look foolish, but it works for us.
