To think a 55 minute commute is too long?

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 25/01/2015 23:18

So dp and I are buying a house in London.

The house he likes would mean my commute was a 20 minute walk to the tube, a 30 minute tube journey (with one change) and another 5 minute walk.

My preferred area would have only about a 5-10 minute walk to the tube (the rest of the journey would be v similar).

Aibu to care about the extra 20 - 30 mins travelling time per day? (He doesn't work because of health problems).

House prices drop significantly over 20 mins from a tube. Is that what your DH is thinking about? Could you maybe work from home a day or two a week to balance it out?

waterrat · 26/01/2015 07:29

I know the area you are talking about and have lived in London all my life - for me I'm with you it's too far from the tube

It's about isolation - and complicating all journeys _ and tht is a long walk when added on to a tue commute

You have I follow instincts when buying

ocelot41 · 26/01/2015 07:29

BTW, highly recommend getting a fold up kick scooter. Halves the time it takes to get anywhere on foot and fun!

Izzy24 · 26/01/2015 07:36

The thought of having to walk twenty minutes on a cold, dark, wet night at the end of a long knackering day would make me a) spend too much money on taxis or b) weep.

Unless H is able to meet you at station and drive you home?

HellKitty · 26/01/2015 07:36

From places I've worked at recently, the first was a good 40 minute walk, great in summer, awful in winter. The next was a 6 minute walk - amazing and yes, timed to the second. The last was a 50 minute bus. The travel gets old very quickly. I'm s/e now and today is my unofficial Sunday!

To have doubts about the length of travel now would say it all for me. Especially as your DH doesn't work.

bigbluestars · 26/01/2015 07:38

55 minutes is nothing.

MuscatBouschet · 26/01/2015 07:39

I'd be more concerned about a tube change. You won't get a seat on the second tube.

Thurlow · 26/01/2015 07:44

I do something similar - 20 mins to the station, 30 mins on a train, then either 10 mins on the Tube or 20 mins walk the other end.

But for that distance we finally managed to move out of London and live in a nice commuter town.

YANBU, overly - but for that travelling time, you can get somewhere outside London and possibly cheaper

hauntedhenry · 26/01/2015 08:08

I don't think it's an unreasonable commute, I do something similar. In the summer I'd enjoy the walk, but can see that it could be a pain in the winter. Could you cycle, scoot or take a bus, as pp have suggested?
Having said that I understand exactly what you mean about feeling stranded so far away from a tube station. It isn't ideal. You will have to decide yourself, op, you are the one who will be doing this.

Floppityflop · 26/01/2015 08:10

It doesn't sound too bad. My commute is between 1.5 and 2 hours door to door each way. I find that quite draining but everyone is different. I know people who commute three hours each way.

FindMeAPixie · 26/01/2015 08:12

FFS look into buses. It is entirely possible that you have a bus stop on the road you are looking at living which takes you all the way into where you work.

I did this, and have 3 BIL who live in North London - they do not even touch the tubes - just get on buses. They are a lot better than they used to be.

Amummyatlast · 26/01/2015 08:13

When I worked in central London I used to have a 40 minute walk to work, which I did in all weathers, so a 20 minute walk doesn't sound bad, even with the horrible tube journey added to it. I agree that I sounds like a standard comumute in London. When we moved out of London and DH had to commute in, his 1hr 15 min journey took less than some of his colleagues who lived in London.

Jinglebells99 · 26/01/2015 08:15

My dh's commute to London takes two hours in the morning, walk to station, train, tube and about an hour and 3/4 in the evening. 55 minutes doesn't sound bad to me. Could your dh give you a lift to the station in the morning? That would make it even more doable.

rollonthesummer · 26/01/2015 08:17

My DH has a two hour commute which sounds horrific but he doesn't seem to mind.

In your case, I'd be pissed off that the move only affects you as he doesn't work? Will he ever work?

CharityD · 26/01/2015 08:18

You are the one doing it so IMO it's important that you are happy with it, so YANBU.
If there is a shorter commute option available, I'd prefer that, personally.
I guess though, there are lots of other factors too, when it comes to house buying, so maybe you (both) haven't found the right house for you, just yet.

Best of luck with the house hunting.

TinyTear · 26/01/2015 08:21

ah reading the areas I will say keep trying Bushwood. I lived there from 2005 to 2009 and it was quite nice (1 bed flat though, so we had to move), although it was a 10 min walk to the big Tesco (I don't drive) so closer shops wouold be good

TinyTear · 26/01/2015 08:21

also, if your DH doesn't work, then yhe choice should be yours

If there were no buses at all, and I had no car/bike, I would try to avoid living somewhere like this, as it would mean that not just getting to work but getting anywhere (into town for a night out etc) would be a big hassle.

With buses though or with a car or bike, I would definitely consider it if the house was right.

wyamc · 26/01/2015 08:48

Normal in London I think.

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 26/01/2015 08:55

Jackw - I very much like your reply! Grin

For me it would be too long but then we brought our house because it was only a 20 min commute.

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 26/01/2015 09:05

PennyJennypie - really good point about friends visiting. I like having friends over and many of them wouldn't feel comfortable walking 20 mins through Walthamstow

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Just to be clear - my Dp is not being inbu at all. He's not trying to force me to move somewhere I don't like, I was just feeling unsure as to whether my feelings about the commute were valid..

Where are you looking in London that doesn't have a train station or a bus stop closer than a 20 minute walk to a tube. I've lived in London for 20 years and never encountered such a place. Not disbelieving you, but it seems highly unusual.

That said, an hour's commute is completely standard in London unless you live in Zone 1 or some parts in Zone 2. Or unless you work near your home.
