If your earn over 20k in the UK you are part of the 1%. Aibu to think that this 1% should be helping the 99% of the world more?

OP posts:

the 1% calculations are generally done on assets not income. As people need their income it isn't necessarily classed as 'wealth'.

Ragwort · 26/01/2015 16:10

Lots of us are asked to contribute to school expenses whether or not we pay £35k a year in tax Hmm and are happy to do so without complaining.

wink1970 · 26/01/2015 16:12

last year I personally paid over £46,000 tax and £6,000 national insurance.

That would fund 2 nurses and the NI certainly covered more than my 1 NHS routine screening. I don't see why I should 'have' to do more, but I also give to charity, though not huge amounts. What else would you like me to do, exactly??

horseygeorgie · 26/01/2015 16:16

Can't be bothered to read the entire thread but think the figures are def wrong!
Which ever number it is, why on earth should people who have worked their butts off to achieve positions like that be responsible for helping lower wage people?!? As someone on about 16K I'm slightly offended I need help! Do I b*llocks and if I did long term I would do what I am doing and get my ass back to college and get the qualifications to earn more myself!

That was very rambling. Grin

softlysoftly · 26/01/2015 16:17

I buy everything from primark. Got to keep them forrin kids in work or they'd starve :(

Madamecastafiore · 26/01/2015 16:19

Entitled?????

tilliebob · 26/01/2015 16:28

Anyone earning over 20k? Really? Well I pay my bills, we pay our way in life for our 3 dcs, give to charities regularly and our local food bank. We have no savings and have too much month left at the end of the money. The way the OP is written actually got my back up to be honest.

BreakingDad77 · 26/01/2015 16:43

You need to post UK values.

wink1970 · 26/01/2015 16:56

On the subject of helping others, I'd like to have a real say in where my taxes are spent.

I have to be honest and say I'm fed up of subsiding Africa, a nation with great natural resources but corrupt and lazy rulers.

I don't want to send aid to India, when they can afford a space program.

There's an interesting link here wheredoesmymoneygo.org/dailybread.html on where your tax is spent - as you can see the largest part is 'helping others'

What has Africa got to do with the Helping Others section of your link?
Click on it.
The vast bulk is going to pensioners here in the UK.

Overseas Aid comes under Running Government and is a teeny, teeny figure

Less than a Nuclear Submarine for example.
Or an Aircraft Carrier for which there are no planes

BreakingDad
I did, yesterday.
2.9 Million of the world's top 1% live in the UK
so basically the top 5% in the UK are in the top 1% worldwide

and most of them post on Mumsnet Smile

Lweji · 26/01/2015 17:25

Also, we don't subsidize Africa.
If anything, we can help the marginalised in Africa. Those who are mistreated by their governments, which kept themselves inpower by force or ignorance.

Lweji · 26/01/2015 17:26

And, ahem, Africa is NOT a nation. It's a huge continent, with many nations. All different.

wink1970 · 26/01/2015 17:34

I did mean to add in after the link that I would like to see my Overseas Aid spent on the UK, but I hit 'post' too early.

The link suggests I personally pay £1.84 a day on OA - I'd like that to be £0, at least until the UK has sorted out the frozen elderly, the families having to use food banks etc.

Overseas aid comprises 0.00347% of your tax bill.

About the same as goes to higher rate pensioners - who spend their winter fuel payments at Majestic.

and a LOT less than is being spent on the Aircraft carriers
or on subsidising EDF to build a Nuclear Power station in Somerset

And frankly I do not have a problem with helping out people whose countries were screwed by colonial exploitation

PigletJohn · 26/01/2015 17:58

If I am ever one of the top 1%, I promise to donate a million pounds a day to improve justice in society and treatment of the disadvantaged.
