To ask what all the happy WOHM do for a living

I have been following a few of the recent threads about being a SAHM etc. There are quite a few WOHM who have posted that they really enjoy their jobs. Can I ask what you do? I am a WOHM with 3 DC aged 7, 4 and 18 months and I am not finding work very exciting at the moment.

University lecturer. Hours are flexible so I have a relaxed morning before dropping off DS (3) at the CM. I don't usually work late so am always there for bath and bedtime. I usually work a bit after DS goes to bed. Love my job. Very intellectually stimulating.

Maddaddam · 22/01/2015 20:34

I'm an academic. I used to do mainly research, now I mostly teach postgraduate students. I like a lot of things about the job - it's always interesting, I like my colleagues, the students are great, the hours are flexible. And there are other things I don't like about the job (workload impossible if you actually do everything you're expected to do. Guilt if you don't). but I do definitely like working in general, paid work, with colleagues.

Sazorchard31 · 22/01/2015 20:35

Another accountant here! I work full time and I'm happy. Super interesting job, lovely team and I get to work from home one day a week which means I get to take and pick my dd (4) up from school that day instead of the CM. Hard work juggling it all but my dd will gr o w up seeing that mummy can have it all!

PearlNicholas · 22/01/2015 20:35

I give financial and pension advice and I love what I do

katsnmouse · 22/01/2015 20:37

veterinary surgeon, full time (4 8-5pm days, plus some weekend/out of hours work). Mummy of 1 small DC. Love my work, no two days the same. I love being at home with my DC too. Hoping to go part time in a few years, after a few more DC's!!

museumum · 22/01/2015 20:42

I'm self employed and work in the cultural sector. I love it. I work four days a week now with a pre-schooler but will change to five school-hour days when he goes to school.

hiccupgirl · 22/01/2015 20:43

Special needs teacher and do 3 days over 4 to give shorter days for school drop offs etc.

Love my job and the hours I work. I always feel very lucky to be doing something I enjoy so much and find interesting and challenging. I am def a better mum for working.

Stillwishihadabs · 22/01/2015 20:45

Pt doctor (hospital speciality) did 26 hours a week (2/3 days) for a long time. Dcs now 8 and 10 doing 4 days a week.

TwoNoisyBoys · 22/01/2015 20:46

Marking my place...... I'm currently undertaking a return to learning, so I can hopefully get a 'career' rather than a job. So interesting to read about what other people do, and why they like it so much.

Mocheenee · 22/01/2015 20:47

I am a finance administrator, bit dull but work in lovely environment. Bit boring compared to the other jobs being listed though - you are all career princesses by the sounds of it :)

windchime · 22/01/2015 20:49

Nurse. Part time, so two 13 hrs shift per week cover it. Five days per week at home. Lovely.

Notstayingup · 22/01/2015 20:49

Project mangment and business enablement manager for a big 4 firm. Love my job, it's interesting and flexible. I work from home at least 2 days a week and can do drop off and pickups. I do travel a reasonable amount too but have just negotiated anualized used hours so I can take the school holidays off. I couldn't imagine not working to be honest

Pengyquin · 22/01/2015 20:58

Really quite jealous to hear of the teachers who can leave their schools at 4pm! Where are these then?

Round here, you can't leave any school until 5.30pm. So not family friendly in the slightest really (when you consider working most evenings too and one day at the weekend planning)

Currently not going back to work, as really cannot see how I would manage with two under two and such a heavy workload. Need a job that stays at work so to speak!

echt · 22/01/2015 21:02

Pengy, unless there's meeting, and they have to be scheduled, I could be out of door soon after 3.15. and home by 4pm, but I'd still have a ton of marking to do.:o

Are you not allowed out until 5.30.?

As it happens, I do like to leave on the dot, but come in rather early to do prep.

LaLa5 · 22/01/2015 21:06

I work in animal welfare, love my job but it's hard work. I'd like to go part time to look after my DC but we need the money.

I love that I get to do what I love and make a difference, but it can be draining.

HappySeven · 22/01/2015 21:07

Medical physicist specialising in cancer treatments. I work 3 days a week which I find a great balance. I find it stimulating and satisfying. I admire anyone who can be a SAHM but it wasn't for me and I like the fact my kids see me going to work.

fairgroundsnack · 22/01/2015 21:08

Corporate lawyer here! I work 4 days a week in the City, sometimes manage to work from home. Commute is 2.5 hours per day, but we live round the corner from my parents. DH is brilliant, works full time but definitely does his share. My job is interesting and can be exciting (and I like the money). I love the social aspect of working.

fullasagun · 22/01/2015 21:09

I am a trainee solicitor - and I love it, I returned to uni to retrain when my youngest started school and I have never regretted it. I work in a small high street firm and my employers are flexible which helps a lot.

ashtrayheart · 22/01/2015 21:11

I work for local government dealing in finance and funding for people in nursing care. It's busy but reasonably paid. I'm also doing an open university degree in psychology so am hoping to change direction once I have completed it Smile

Fishandjam · 22/01/2015 21:17

In-house lawyer for a tech company, 4 days a week. I can feel like I'm rushing from pillar to post re the commute and getting DCs to and from childcare/before and after school club, and I'd really like to work a slightly shorter day to achieve that (not currently possible). Job can sometimes be dull but what job can't? My employer is also very paternalistic in a good way - free hot lunches, gym, exercise bootcamp, very good maternity leave/medical insurance/sick pay. And as my granny would have said, it's an indoor job with no heavy lifting Smile

Moreisnnogedag · 22/01/2015 21:18

Surgeon. Love it, work FT with crappy commute but fantastic department with great relationship with allied health professionals. Plus I get to fix people (mostly)!

Saying that, only possible because DH is a brilliant sahd.

HalloweenDuck · 22/01/2015 21:21

I run a children's theatre school. It is great as my children come with me. I run workshops in the holidays. Have free time in the day to get shopping done and paperwork etc. Doesn't pay great but only opened in 2013. Love it.

vinoandbrie · 22/01/2015 21:24

Manager in a big 4 firm. Love that I make my own money and have my own career.

namelessposter · 22/01/2015 21:28

Self employed, own SME in the services sector. Work 10-4, but with a long commute.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 22/01/2015 21:28

I am a Pastoral Support manager in a large inner city school.
37 hours a week.
I am responsible for behaviour, attendance, child protection and safeguarding.

I love the challenge, the satisfaction, the people I work with and the good outcomes my job contributes to for children and families.

It can be deeply saddening, but I have become somewhat hardened and accustomed to the very difficult situations lots of my families find themselves in.
I will never become hardened to the disclosures of abuse.

My job is the most satisfying and enjoyable part of my life, after being a parent.
