To ask what all the happy WOHM do for a living

I have been following a few of the recent threads about being a SAHM etc. There are quite a few WOHM who have posted that they really enjoy their jobs. Can I ask what you do? I am a WOHM with 3 DC aged 7, 4 and 18 months and I am not finding work very exciting at the moment.

Love my job. Interesting colleagues from all over the world, great atmosphere, challenging work. -> Engineer - lead and work with a small SW verification team. (30h/week, usually over 5 days.)

I am a journalist.

GingerCuddleMonster · 22/01/2015 16:33

TheWordFactory · 22/01/2015 16:34

Shakey1500 · 22/01/2015 16:36

muminhants · 22/01/2015 16:37

I'm a solicitor but I don't advise on the law anymore, I write about it for a law publishing company. I also worked in a library for a year while doing some freelance writing on law stuff.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/01/2015 16:38

Quality assurance here too, I really enjoy it.

iliketea · 22/01/2015 16:39

Nurse (community rather than hospital). I love my job, hours are pretty family friendly as no shifts so works well around achool and childminder. Plus I love my job so it was an easy choice to make.

I think if you have a choice whether to be a sahm or a wohm, it's probably easier to choose to go back if you love what you do - if you really hates your job and didn't have to go back for financial reasons, why would you? You'd be better spending the time as a sahm finding a job that you enjoy before you go back from maternity leave.

CrockedPot · 22/01/2015 16:41

Teacher. Am always busy but love my job and my way of life.

firefly78 · 22/01/2015 16:42

social worker. love working with people. very rewarding. office is 5 min drive away. paperwork and workload are the downside.

LeBearPolar · 22/01/2015 16:43

Teacher here too. Marking is a pain (English teacher) but I love the kids and love my subject. Never boring!

SASASI · 22/01/2015 16:44

University Admin. 2.5 days a week. One hr commute each way.

Decent pay, fab holidays & benefits ie maternity, sick pay. Great pension.

The only thing I would change is the commute but it's nice to work somewhere where not everyone knows your business (from a small town). I wouldn't get a job closer to home with the perks & career prospects so it a choice I've made.

Bazoo23 · 22/01/2015 16:47

Newborn hearing screener two days a week. Absolutely love it!

merrygoround51 · 22/01/2015 16:48

Head of Marketing for a large company. Flexible and part time which helps with the happiness factor

happyyonisleepyyoni · 22/01/2015 16:48

Full time project manager at a university, I really enjoy the work it's a family friendly employer and workload is ok. Am thinking about reducing hours but it's nice to have the money!

TwoLittleTerrors · 22/01/2015 16:53

Software developer. Full time. I work with very smart people and the work is challenging and interesting. I Can work from home occasionally on my laptop. Also I can go in late or leave early if needed, but ofc I need to make up lost time. I could also get last minute annual leave approved for childrens sickness.

However this is based on having preschool children. I don't know how it will be when DD1 starts school.

TwoLittleTerrors · 22/01/2015 16:53

And no overtime either. It's pretty much 40 hous.

illcounttothree · 22/01/2015 16:56

Finance manager in the local primary school, but because it's a small school and there are only three of us in the office I end up doing all sorts of things, really. Keeps things interesting, plus it's the school my kids go to. I love my job beyond all sense or reason (which is handy because the pay is roughly half what I could expect in the private sector!).

Pippioddstocking · 22/01/2015 16:57

Nurse - again in the community , love my job. Only work 25 hours a week though as need to be main childcare provider due to DH,s 60 hours a week he works .

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 22/01/2015 17:05

Lawyer - salaried partner in the City but in a non-corporate area and a humane firm (they do exist!) so hard work but not brutal in terms of late nights etc. I have a long commute (1.5hrs each way but not the end of the world - 45 mins on mainline train = time to have a coffee and read the paper) so have a part-time deal whereby I leave early a couple of days a week so I can do the bed and bath routine some of the time. I've been on mat leave twice and feel I am happier and a better parent when working.

TheLondoner22 · 22/01/2015 17:06

PA - 4hrs every morning Monday to Friday. Have 14mth DS. It's ideal :)

Namehanger · 22/01/2015 17:14

Another lawyer - work for a small private practice, walk to work and very flexible employer.

Interesting, high quality work.

Tried SAHM but really slow death....

bigbluestars · 22/01/2015 17:16

I am a self employed work at home Mum- during school holidays I work around 15 hours a week, during term time it can be 50 hours a week. I choose how busy ( and how much I earn) I want to be.

Guiltypleasures001 · 22/01/2015 17:21
