AIBU to ask the neighbours to open the curtains?

A youngish couple with no children bought a house on our estate about a year ago. They don't get involved with any of the activities such as the summer bbq and basically seem to isolate themselves from the rest of us, their loss. However my main bug is that they NEVER have the living room curtains open and quite often leave the other ones shut also, today every single one of them are shut and I know they are home.

I've hinted a couple of times that it would be best for them to leave them open, the girl mumbled something about a projector and watching films, but they can't be watching films all the time.

AIBU to just point blank ask them to open the curtains during the day, it really depresses me to look across to their house with all the curtains closed, it doesn't look inviting and it looks odd compared to the rest of the estate, we all manage to open their curtains everyday, so why can't they? My DH thinks I'm BU and should just leave them to it but I think when it effects other people I have a right to say something?

Mine are shut during the day as I work nights. Plus our bedroom window looks straight onto a busy road (ground floor flat). I wish I had time to worry about such trivial matters.

WhenMarnieWasThere · 22/01/2015 07:56

I'm going to throw into the mix the fact that we never SHUT our curtains. Ever.

The light coming through the bedroom windows in the morning helps me wake up. And no one can see in due to the aspect of the house so it doesn't bother me.

We have nets downstairs and live in the back area of the through living room/dining room so the downstairs curtains are always open too.

When we moved to our new house the woman who lives opposite was really friendly and welcoming, even brought us cake round and invited me to various baby groups. We always chatted in the street etc. About 2 months in she went distinctly cold and stopped saying hello when I bumped into her. Couldn't for the life of me work out what we'd done, until I remembered the time she came round to invite us to the street summer party and I told her we already had plans! That was when she stopped talking to me. We also rarely open our curtains at the front of the house Shock. Mainly because we have a playroom at the back of the house and that's the only room we use really until after DD is in bed (when it's dark anyway). She must detest me.

Damn. We're never going to find out about the curtain etiquette of that now the op is gone.

I think it's odd to keep curtains closed all day. where I am that would mean moody damp smelly rooms.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 22/01/2015 08:07

Moody rooms?

In our house it means that the old, draughty windows in our rented Victorian terrace don't negate the effects of the central heating.

Jackieharris · 22/01/2015 08:17

Surely the point in having curtains is to keep them closed to stop nosey neighbours peeking in?

Are you George Osborne?

And is it 2012?

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 22/01/2015 08:45

We're all over the place with our curtains actually. We almost never open our bedroom curtains. Front set of living room curtains are opened in the conventional manner, but our living room goes all the way through the house so has a window at the front and the back.

The curtains at the back are only closed during hours of darkness in winter to keep the heat in. Between about March and November, they remain open 24/7.

We have voiles at the front but not the back and no curtains at all over the bathroom or kitchen windows, which are at the back of the house. Were not overlooked at all at the back unless you count a farmhouse about 200 yards away, so no-one can see in unless the farmhouse occupants are spying on us using binoculars.

cozietoesie · 22/01/2015 08:51

After reading this thread, I think you have to assume the worst, Ilkley. For goodness sake get some nets up quick.

Seff · 22/01/2015 09:09

I've never heard about that Trills I can't believe he actually said that. Well, I suppose I can.

What a twat.

KingJoffreyObviouslyWatchesHol · 22/01/2015 09:10

Our bedroom curtains were open all night but I've just closed them as I'm lying in and I was finding it a bit bright.

Is that okay, do you think?

cozietoesie · 22/01/2015 09:26

Marginal, KingJoffrey. Very marginal.

ram2014 · 22/01/2015 09:29

Wow, you sound like my neighbour, who called our landlord that we hadn't cut the grass in 2 weeks since we had a baby. My curtains and windows aren't opened until about 10am as I am running around like a headless chicken all morning, opening curtains isn't a priority of mine.

DrElizabethPlimpton · 22/01/2015 09:33

"My name is Michael Pain and I am a nosey neighbour"

KingJoffreyObviouslyWatchesHol · 22/01/2015 09:34

Phew!

Bloke next door to us doesn't have any curtains upstairs at all. Or blinds. Chilly.

Pretty sure he's storing bodies though so maybe he needs it to be quite cold.

LoisDrankMyTableDecoration · 22/01/2015 09:46

My first ever Biscuit Please tell me this is a reverse op.

LoisDrankMyTableDecoration · 22/01/2015 09:50

Ooh just read it isn't a reverse! I'm gobsmacked. Sorry but yabvvvvu.

Hatespiders · 22/01/2015 09:51

As I opened our curtains at the front of our house this morning at 6am, I found myself having a giggle. Grin
This thread has cheered everyone up hasn't it?

frankie80 · 22/01/2015 09:53

A street which has summer bbqs is my worst nightmare.

My old street was like this and it was a way to find out all about us - how much we earned, how we raised our child compared with theirs, what our house was like etc.

Hated it. All used to bitch about us. That street was total hell.

And I kept my curtains closed to stop them blatently standing outside and peering in!

Seff · 22/01/2015 10:06

I still don't really get why it matters if someone opens their curtains though. Or is it one of those things that people who care too much about the opinions of others worry about?

Seff · 22/01/2015 10:07

What all us lazy and slobby curtain closers need is cardboard cutouts like in Home Alone.

KingJoffreyObviouslyWatchesHol · 22/01/2015 10:20

10.30am.

My curtains are still closed...

bettyboop1970 · 22/01/2015 10:24

I work nights and bedroom curtains are closed all the time.
