my son 23yrs pointed out the window to a bird and asked 'is that a threstral'?

A thestral is a creature from harry potter I wondered what else my son thought might be real ?
He is, after all the first generation who was exposed to harry potter.

what other side effects have others seen in their children who are under the influence of harry potter?

I was trying to think of the effect that HP had had on me as a 23 year-old and it wasn't until your post that I remembered the obvious - I play (Muggle) Quidditch. And own my own broomtick. Blush

It is actually a fantastic, athletic, and bloody brutal sport in its own right!

Jazzhandsrule · 18/01/2015 19:29

My DC who has just turned 7 and is listening to the audio version of the books, keeps trying to put spells on me. She also can do a pretty good impression of parcel tongue. In fact it is starting to freak me out!

Hovis2001 · 18/01/2015 19:36

*broomstick, not tick!

quidditchtonedthighs · 18/01/2015 19:46

My nieces are 22, 23, 25 and 25 and they all love Harry Potter and grew up with the books and films. We all read them together - 23 is not too young to have been into them at all.

AliceinWinterWonderland · 18/01/2015 19:48

My 5yo ds2 seems to think that if he waves his arms and shouts unintelligible words, that something will happen. (like zapping his brother or something)

Then again, ds2 wears glasses and actually does have a scar on his forehead... perhaps he is channelling his inner "Harry Potter". He did ask for a broom for Christmas. Hmm I was hoping he was thinking of sweeping the kitchen and the hall, but I suspect not.

Ahhh! I remember reading it to my year 4 class at the end of the day... And the gasps and awws as we got through it! The surprises and revelations! And when the bell went. .. There'd be "carry on miss! One more page!! Ignore the bell!"
This was way before the films and before anyone had cottoned onto Harry Potter! No one had read it! Brilliant! It'll never happen again! Sad

FriedFishAndBread · 18/01/2015 20:58

I'm 26 and I thought phoenix's were real until August last year when I asked my dstep dad and dm where I could see one.

I didn't believe they died and came back to life I thought there was a scientific sort of answer for that. Blush

velourvoyageur · 18/01/2015 20:58

I once insisted to my dad that it was "spellotape" not sellotape and that the "p" was a silent one in the real world, but not in Harry Potter Blush

velourvoyageur · 18/01/2015 21:00

It would be fairly rare for a 6 year old to be reading HP I think! of course it's possible but let's not pretend that it's average :)

Rockinghorse123 · 18/01/2015 21:06

My mum hid my hogwarts letter, I'm certain of it.

I'm 29. Grin

morethanpotatoprints · 18/01/2015 21:11

My ds1 is 23 and ds2 20, they both grew up watching and reading HP.
They read the first few books but don't know how young they were, think ds1 was 9 when he started reading them.

Tutt · 18/01/2015 21:13

My 18 year old is the spit of Daniel Radcliffe (all through the Harry growning its like son has morphed into him) and when the movies came out had little round specs... he hates Harry Potter sigh.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 18/01/2015 21:13

Im 29. Probably a Ravenclaw. My owl clearly got lost in a storm.

HicDraconis · 18/01/2015 21:18

Both my boys were reading Harry Potter at 6 - and obviously while I think they are special and amazing, I suspect it's not that rare :)

They are now 7&8 and have been allowed to read up to the Order of the Phoenix - just having a debate with the 8 year old over whether he's old enough to read half blood prince!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/01/2015 21:23

Still waiting for Lucius Malfoy's reply on my offer of marriage, that moody blonde beauty will not ignore me.

PixieofCatan · 18/01/2015 21:34

I was 11 when I started reading HP, I cried when I realised I was too old to get my letter Sad

ghostinthecanvas · 18/01/2015 21:42

My youngest got his letter to hogwarts last Christmas.

I think I died a bit inside when his face crumpled with the realisation he really would have to unpack.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 18/01/2015 21:54

I started reading Harry Potter when I.was 6. I was given the first three books Christmas 2000.

NeedABumChange · 18/01/2015 21:54

I read first HP a week after my 7th birthday- it became my favourite present. I did read it three times in a row or so to fully understand what was going on though but even that only took a few weeks.
I read a lot but don't think I was that special, pretty sure a lot of my class read it too.

Sagethyme · 18/01/2015 22:01

I so want a house-elf. Cant wait till my littlens are older enough to enjoy HP my all time fav bk!

pourmeanotherglass · 18/01/2015 22:06

They seem to have now grown out of pointing sticks at each other and shouting EX-SMELLY-ARMPITS.

SistersOfPercy · 18/01/2015 22:20

Im 41. my most prized possession is a Slytherin hoodie from the tour. We also have a magic wand TV remote Blush

I found Harry as an adult but my children, especially the youngest who was born in 97 are huge huge fans.

Incidentally, for all potter mad folk, primark has LOADS of merchandise in at present. They have full Hogwarts track suits, jumpers, house t shirts, house track suits, hats, scarves and gloves. Dd is currently modeling a Harry 'most wanted' jumper and Slytherin tracksuit bottoms.

TrixAreForKids · 19/01/2015 12:54

DP is 20, a proud griffindor, and still waiting for the owl to deliver his letter. i'm still waiting for mine, too. I'm in slytherin ;D

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 19/01/2015 13:05
