Was at a wedding last night. Each of the tables we're named after a spirit and they had a bottle of whatever on the table. I was a bit tipsy and didn't know many people, so cracked open some whisky without noticing that it had a label on the other side saying drinking this would be a 150 fee. I only had a few mm and screwed the lid back on tightly after I realise d the fee.

One aibu to think 150 a bottle is a stupid amount?

Two should I go back to the hotel today sober to try and get a reduction in the fee as was barely touched?

Three should I pay whatever the charge is?

Presumably the bride and groom expected themto be opened? Or they shouldn't have put out.

StockingFullOfCoal · 18/01/2015 10:21

Shock Surely the b&g already paid for the booze on the tables?! Very very silly of them to have booze on the tables that have a price tag of 150 if they haven't paid for them, I'd never take that risk!

LongDistanceLove · 18/01/2015 10:22

That's really sneaky in my opinion, having the bottle on the table with a note on the back with the opening fee. Surly the bride and groom knew the bottles would have an additional fee if opened, and if they didn't approve it wouldn't be there?

gallicgirl · 18/01/2015 10:22

I'm inclined to think the couple shouldn't have put £150 bottles of whiskey on tables if they weren't prepared to pay for it. I would also guess that the couple will have the remainder of the bottle.

alittlethyme · 18/01/2015 10:23

No they didn't expect them to be opened, was just decoration. I was the only one of the ten tables that opened one. The staff removed them all just before dinner was served.

It was their own booze on the tables, but the fee was only if they were opened.

If they wanted them as decorations they probably should have put empty ones out, maybe with a coloured liquid in. Using real ones was just ridiculous!

LennyCrabsticks · 18/01/2015 10:25

What?

I have never heard anything so ridiculous. Are you sure you haven't just completely misunderstood the concept? Why would the b and g put undrinkable booze on the table? I reckon it was there to be drunk and you've wasted their £150 by only having a tiny amount.

DandyHighwayman · 18/01/2015 10:25

Och that is poor form from the hotel and hosts

No don't go and pay

itsmeitscathy · 18/01/2015 10:25

Ouch! Sounds like a bad move on their part - what was wrong with flowers?!

RubberBulletKisses · 18/01/2015 10:25

Did the hotel actually realise it had been opened?

MrsMaker83 · 18/01/2015 10:26

Not your fault! Why bother putting expensive drinks out for decoration?! Hmm

DandyHighwayman · 18/01/2015 10:26

Also what was the brand? And was it good? #nosy

SuburbanRhonda · 18/01/2015 10:26

What a weird thing to do at a wedding meal (them, not you, OP).

If they were just for decoration, why weren't they filled with water?

LennyCrabsticks · 18/01/2015 10:26

Oh x post.

That is stupid. Of them not you. How ridiculous.

Purplepoodle · 18/01/2015 10:28

I think your going to have to pay the fee but I would expect to take the bottle home

It was just bog standard stuff, grouse. The 150 was the corkage fee the hotel charge for any spirits

Its a ridiculous amount to have to pay but it did have the price on it and you did open it and drink it. Someone will have to pay for it and if you don't own up the bride and groom will have
to fork out.
I know this as something similar
happened at our wedding and it took the shine of an otherwise lovely day to think some we had liked enough to invite was happy to dump a big bar bill on us.
You wouldn't BU to see if the hotel will let you off with some of it but you should pay.

Oh now I get it - So it was the bride and grooms 'theme' to have spirits on the table but the spirit bottles were not provided by the hotel - hence corkage.

How utterly stupid of the bride and groom. Are they thick or what?!

ILovePud · 18/01/2015 10:32

How utterly daft, they are lucky that they didn't end up with a £1,500 bill. In your situation I'd probably complain but pay up if it looks as though the bride and groom will be landed with the bill otherwise and if I paid I'd be taking it home. What was it, is that a reasonable mark up or extortionate?

BoomBoomsCousin · 18/01/2015 10:32

If you were the only one drunk tipsy enough to open one and they hadn't even served dinner yet, was it an ordeal of a wedding?

waithorse · 18/01/2015 10:32

How ridiculous. Do the bride and groom/hotel expect you to pay ? Shock
