Was at a wedding last night. Each of the tables we're named after a spirit and they had a bottle of whatever on the table. I was a bit tipsy and didn't know many people, so cracked open some whisky without noticing that it had a label on the other side saying drinking this would be a 150 fee. I only had a few mm and screwed the lid back on tightly after I realise d the fee.

One aibu to think 150 a bottle is a stupid amount?

Two should I go back to the hotel today sober to try and get a reduction in the fee as was barely touched?

Three should I pay whatever the charge is?

I haven't read the whole thread yet (am on p7) but I just want to say here that I have indeed been at a wedding where people my dad started eating the flowers between courses. There had been edible flowers with the starters (this was in the early 90s when no one had seen such a thing before) and lots of pissed guests started wondering if the flower decorations were also edible.

How often do you inspect bottles at parties to see if there is a note at the back stating that it carries up a fee if you drink from it?

Didn't think so.

Gosh some are demanding if I don't post updates daily! Nothing to add, the hotel wouldn't discuss it with me and the bng are in Australia for 3 weeks. Wish I took a photo, it wasn't a centrepiece just a bottle in the middle of the table. There was also a jug of water next to it that I helped myself to.

This is MN, we require updates at every 5 min. How dare you be away for longer than that? Grin

Did you check underneath the jug?

Did you actually go and talk to the hotel? Why, why, why?

Well, if they left the bottle on the table, I'd presume it was to be drunk, and the hosts would pick up the tab!

The only explanation I can think of for this is that someone involved in organising/paying for the wedding wanted a particular drink to be available, and as the venue couldn't source it, they opted for bottles on tables with a corkage fee. A bit like putting money behind the bar.

On what planet would a guest be expected to pay? If you found wedding menu on the reception desk, you wouldn't suddenly think "Oh, my meal cost £40, I'd better offer to pay for it."

It's a wedding, y'know, a big party where people invite you along to have a good time on them.

NorbertDentressangle · 20/01/2015 21:19

Shock Shock You drank some of the water, too ?!?!

Did you not read the teeny, tiny label on the underneath of the jug that said it was angels tears and was £788.48 a glass ?!

I know some people on seeing a £150 corkage fee would piss in the whisky to top it up.

A suggestion on what to do with the bottle
