A week on food, clothes and petrol?

OP posts:
Artandco · 14/01/2015 19:55

Lady - you must buy magic chicken! One chicken is def one meal and chicken soup only here. My 3 year old eats a whole leg! And they aren't that big. A whole chicken from butcher costs around £7 here. Chicken breasts about £5 for 5. So cheaper to buy breasts.

Bacon sandwich or egg sandwich - they aren't cheap either. Bacon sandwiches for x4 would be 8 rashers of bacon. Around £3.50. Plus bread/ egg

Fooshufflewickbannanapants · 14/01/2015 19:57

Yes Elishiva 50-70 I am a sahm so have time to cook from scratch, we have meat but not large portions, I buy on line we meal plan and use left overs in casseroles etc I also have two freezers which helps

RonaldMcDonald · 14/01/2015 20:01

£80-£100 on food - there are four of us...myself and 3 girls
I spend about £300 per month on clothes and an extra £2000 yearly
Petrol works out at about £50 pm

Tinkerball · 14/01/2015 20:01

I have never managed to make a chicken - no matter how big last more than a meal for 5 of us, and possibly some sandwiches.

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 14/01/2015 20:02

I'd still go for a whole chicken, look to spend around £8. 2 legs, 2 breasts plus the bits for £7, whereas 2 chicken breasts for £5, so you're getting the legs, wings and little bits for £2. You can make a meal and a half out of these.

You can buy larger packs of bacon for £4 which will last for a couple of meals.

Violettatrump · 14/01/2015 20:03

90 food 2 adults 4 boys
20 petrol
5 max for clothes for myself and kids. All second hand

RonaldMcDonald · 14/01/2015 20:03

I never understand how anyone makes a chicken last for more than two meals
amazed by it tbh
I only ever have one chicken breast left at the end of a roast chicken dinner
the girls eat all the dark meat
i eat a chicken breast and there is one over
my girls are small children

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 14/01/2015 20:04

I'd buy 2 as there's 5 of you, Tinkerball.

Fathertedismyuncle · 14/01/2015 20:06

Family of 6 . 2 adults, 4 kids under 10
£125 on food for everything
£75 per week fuel. Dh has to commute by car and we live rurally.
£20 per week clothes. Never buy full price though

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 14/01/2015 20:09

2 chicken breasts (we have half of these each as there's quite a lot of chicken on a decent sized bird, leaving the other one for a different day), 2 legs and the bits (not cut off when you carve it up). There's also bits of chicken at the bottom so I literally get all of the chicken off it. I bulk the roast out with stuffing, roast veg, steamed veg so it's all about portion control.

Marylou2 · 14/01/2015 20:10

About £150 a week on food, cleaning stuff etc.More if you include takeaway and meals out.3 of us.We're obviously spending too much looking at other responses.
Virtually nothing on transport as we both have company cars.
£400 per month on clothes, mainly me and DD.DH has to be dragged to buy clothes.I feel really guilty now although we both work very hard.

Turquoisetamborine · 14/01/2015 20:12

There's two adults, a 7yr old, a cat and I'm pregnant so no alcohol to buy. Our food is £300pm inc cleaning products.
Petrol is £250pm
Clothes vary. Probably averages £80pm.

CremeEggThief · 14/01/2015 20:12

For those of you looking to cut the cost, why not try one or two cheap meals a week, especially if your children eat school dinners. Basically, what many of us eat for lunch usually.
Jacket potatoes with cheese and beans.
Omelette and salad/frozen veg.
Soup and a sandwich/toastie.
Scrambled eggs on toast.
Pasta and pesto with grated cheese and maybe some frozen veg.

Eating one or two of these a week as a main meal goes a long way towards reducing your food bills.

Artandco · 14/01/2015 20:14

Lady - 5 breasts for £5 v whole chicken £7 (2breasts, x2 legs, plus crap). The breasts are cheaper.

OatcakeCravings · 14/01/2015 20:15

About £130 a week on food, but that includes toiletries and cleaning stuff and a couple of bottles of wine.

£50 to £60 on petrol (two cars)

Maybe £70 to £100 on clothes

That's for 3 of us, two adults and one child

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 14/01/2015 20:16

The legs and 'crap' often have more flavour than the breasts Wink If you're on a tight budget it makes sense to buy a whole chicken and find a way to eat these too.

Violettatrump · 14/01/2015 20:17

OP where do you get your organic food from? Waitrose and sainsburies are much more expensive then local organic providers or riverford.

What do you cook OP? We do half a week veggie, half a week carnivore. So lentil based dishes, chick pea based dishes, various bean dishes also (chilli), homemade pizza, frittata omelette, rice pudding, Greek yogurt, then cheaper carnivore meals like stew, cottage pie, fish cakes, grilled Coaly etc.

Violettatrump · 14/01/2015 20:18

We also do a couple of cheap meals each week too. Like jacket potato or soup

disneymum3 · 14/01/2015 20:22

Food: depending on what I am cooking, £50 - £70 a week. This includes toiletries, cleaning products, and pet food. 2 adults 3 children. Then £5 - £10 on top up shopping, this is normally milk, bread, and fresh veg.
Petrol: £0, we don't have a car.
Clothes: I have no idea, only ever buy clothes when absolutely needed.

o0 · 14/01/2015 20:28

£150 a week on food. 2 adults + 2 children.

£30 a week for petrol.

Don't buy clothes every week so have no idea what it would work out as.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/01/2015 21:04

I am also amazed at £50 for 8 people! How?

I've just done a week's shop for 4 (2adults, 2 teenagers) for £90. That's cooking from scratch, no booze and we are out on Friday night

QueenVick · 14/01/2015 21:14

Purpleflamigos, Yep 30p each per day. They get a choice of toast or cereal with a choice of drink of water or milk. I send them with a couple of pieces of fruit each in their bags though as I'm paranoid about them being hungry at school Blush (I always remember being hungry at school)

Our after school clubs are free and have waiting lists for some of them, they only run until 4.15pm though so no good if a parent finishes work at 5pm onwards.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/01/2015 21:16

Food about 100 a week for 2 adults 1 child including nappies. Clothes about 50 to 100 a month. Fuel about 150 quid a month.

VenusRising · 14/01/2015 21:18

We are at about 150 per week on organic fruit, grains, veg and meat. We buy two loaves of bread and I bake cakes and biscuits. We cook from scratch.

No petrol costs, but about 20 per month on transport, including trains, buses and taxis to clients' offices.

I buy in the sales for shoes and clothes. Just had to buy new school shoes and trainers for dcs as they're grown out of ones bought in september, luckily sales are good.

alpacasosoftsnowgentlyfalling · 14/01/2015 21:38
