I think, if I've nowhere to be, 3-4pm is ok to have a cheeky glass while doing tea for DD getting in from school (she's 15).
I have a 16 month old toddler who is fantastic, but sometimes, especially if I've been up since 5, the day seems soooooo long, so a nice glass of plonk just helps things along!!
My question is, how early is TOO early?!

TheEnduringMoment · 13/01/2015 19:23

I like a glass once the DC are asleep. Unfortunately that's often now 10pm Sad and atm not until February Sad Sad

QueenBean · 13/01/2015 19:30

Sometimes 4pm, sometimes 8pm, sometimes 11am

And sometimes, never at all and happy to drink sparking water on a night out. I must be growing up!!

BathshebaDarkstone · 13/01/2015 19:33

I'm not talking about getting rat-arsed either. I have one beer a week, more if we're at a literary society meeting or religious gathering. Smile

Sidge · 13/01/2015 19:33

Phaedra I don't drink in the week, especially as I am a single mum and I think drinking alone is a bit of an alarm bell.

I drink at weekends when I see my OH, and to be honest I really look forward to my Friday night very large glass of wine! It marks the end of my working week, a chance to relax knowing I don't have to get up at 0615 the next day and it's a nice sociable thing to share a bottle with my man.

MrsTawdry · 13/01/2015 19:37

Oh on Mumsnet you can get pissed anytime you like OP so you won't find much judgement here. Children's Birthday parties, picnics, funerals...they're all "fine" for drinking.

BathshebaDarkstone · 13/01/2015 19:38

Iveabsolutely words , without the spaces, so words Smile

balancingfigure · 13/01/2015 19:40

As some have said its not when you drink but who how much. If your wine o'clock is 3 pm and you keep drinking all afternoon it may be early!

At weekends DH and I will often have a small glass of wine at lunchtime if we we're not doing much else that day. But then we wouldn't drink again until the evening if at all.

We have some friends we go away with and they pride themselves on waiting until 6 before drinking and then proceed to drink loads. We prefer to space out our treats!

fromparistoberlin73 · 13/01/2015 19:42

For me 5pm . That said my kids wake up much later than yours op

WhirlyTwirlySnowflakes · 13/01/2015 19:43

The problem is what if you have a drink at 3pm and then at dinner time suddenly discover you are missing some vital ingredient for dinner/packed lunches/play piece?

I'd be annoyed I couldn't jump in the car to get it.

forwarding · 13/01/2015 19:46

6pm traditionally.

Now with the kids it's after they're in bed, if I want one. It's part of sitting down and enjoying the peace Smile

fluffyraggies · 13/01/2015 19:46

I had a friend who used to like a glass of wine in the evening most evenings. She often found she had to have the glass of wine to unwind. Then she found she had to have a couple of glasses. Then she found she struggled to not have them.

PrincessOfThemyscira · 13/01/2015 19:46

If you are cooking, anytime is game on.

Also It's 5 o'clock somewhere...

KERALA1 · 13/01/2015 19:47

Chilled sparkling water mon to Thursday (swot). Weekends 6pm

WowOoo · 13/01/2015 19:53

My kids are finally in bed and I'm having a glass. Day off work tomorrow though and Dh will do school drop off, then back to work on Thursday.

I used to be a no booze Mon- Thursday person, but that's faded away.

fredfredsausagehead1 · 13/01/2015 20:10

I'm doing well if I can hang on until 5??

PhaedraIsMyName · 13/01/2015 20:11

The difficulty I have is that alcohol enhances the way I feel. If I'm happy and sociable with friends then wine will add to that. If I'm tired, sad, angry, depressed, wound up wine will add to that too, not diminish it.

I might, and frequently do, think I want and need a cup of tea/coffee/chocolate/cake and I want it now. The caffeine, sugar and other chemicals in them will all give a boost.

I don't think I've ever thought, no matter how long, hard or stressful a day at work has been, that I want/ need a drink.

exWifebeginsat40 · 13/01/2015 20:16

actually, it's not when you drink, or how much, but what the consequences are.

it can be a very slippery slope indeed.

Jengnr · 13/01/2015 20:17

If the husband will be home before I'm ratarsed it's gin o clock. :)

Ijustdontknowwhattodowithmysel · 13/01/2015 20:21

5pm is fine. 12 on a weekend is fine. 7am on Christmas Day is fine, or at a festival. Weekday lunch is fine if with friends, from3pm on a Friday.

On holiday anytime is fine.

HelloItsStillMeFell · 14/01/2015 03:21

I completely agree with what Mintyy said. When mine were little I couldn't wait for the point in the afternoon evening when I'd pour myself a glass of wine, but it definitely got gradually earlier and earlier the more children I had. Confused I wasn't drinking an excessive amount but I realised I was placing too much importance on having it to help me get through a tough day with the DCs, instead of rewarding myself at the end of one, when they were in bed.

The day I realised I felt so tired and fed up that I wanted a drink at 2pm (with a 7 yo, a 4 yo and a baby) was the day I went to the GP and came away with antidepressants instead. Grin

Of course it's perfectly possible to have a glass of wine at 2pm, or noon and it not be a worry. It really depends on the context of the occasion, but being at home on your own on a Tuesday at 3pm with the kids watching Peppa Pig is not really very appropriate and could become a problem if you are not very careful.

Redglitter · 14/01/2015 04:46

7 am if I'm just in after a busy/stressful night shift

FrancesNiadova · 14/01/2015 04:55
