To ask you if you boil and cool your mince meat before cooking it?

Because this is what mine looks like after boiling and cooling, and I took the pic after removing another heaped spoonful. It's sheep mince from my local butchers which sells halal meat (not that makes a difference). It's always the same.

I wonder what makes it have such high fat content. I think it was meat from the leg.

300 messages on boiled mince. I love Mumsnet.

Someone needs to link to the DH-eats-fatball thread.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 14/01/2015 13:31

OP it does sound like it tastes ok though. I'm not sure why you are getting so completely lambasted.

(see what I did there Wink )

BumWad · 14/01/2015 13:44

Grin picture this.

Defo feeling the OP love

myfallingstar · 14/01/2015 14:15

Why the hell would you boil it first Confused I made chili the other day and I didn't boil my mince first and I also freezed the left overs

That's sounds misrable

foreverdepressed · 14/01/2015 15:27

I boil some minced meat, but only the frozen stuff from the pet shop that I feed to the dog (won't eat it raw).

It looks and sounds disgusting. Just brown it off in a pan and drain off the excess fat - although having some fat adds flavor anyway.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 14/01/2015 15:53

Boiling is maybe something you've learnt from older relatives?

Fat does indeed need removing from mutton (& whatever the name is of the other one!), and people that are saying it doesn't have obviously not cooked it before. It does have lots more fat in it than other cuts or other meats.

I don't get why the boiling though :)

Hulababy · 14/01/2015 16:03

Wouldn't boiling it also remove all the vitamins and minerals, as well as most of the flavour?

BeggingYourPardon · 14/01/2015 16:57

OP I honestly thought you had stirred a dog shit in your sheep mince with the horror shown in some of the last 300 posts.

If you served it to me I'd eat it and probably wouldn't notice the difference. If you have kids and they eat it and don't complain it must be alright.

Hulababy · 14/01/2015 17:25

Cooked mince tonight in fact, its for DH - just been done in a pan on the hob, no water, drop of oil. And then lots of veggies, a bit of stock and some herbs added. All ready to go inside a big Yorkshire pudding later.

Hulababy · 14/01/2015 17:26

It was 5% fat beef mince - very little fat has come out. I was an extra alert after reading this thread :D

Sistedtwister · 14/01/2015 17:29

I have heard of boiling mince. Did anyone ever listen to hirstys daily dose on capital radio Yorkshire area.

Hirsty had a girlfriend who boiled mince, he asked his co-presenters if that was how you were supposed to cook it. They took the piss for weeks and called her the mince boiler.

I dry fry mine in a large saucepan

fatlazymummy · 14/01/2015 17:39

My late MIL used to boil mince before she made bolognaise. I'm not sure if she did the cooling it off and scraping the fat off the top thing though. She just thought it wouldn't be cooked properly if it wasn't boiled first.
I dry fry mine and drain the fat off ,only because my elder hates anything fatty. My youngest child then eats all the drained off fat (she loves fat), so that way they're both happy.

You have an incredible memory AndyWarhols or you're a stalker Confused.

We ate the leftovers today. Everything finished and gone. Another fine piece of cooking by moi.

I have to say I still think boiling mince is a bit rank.

But, credit where it's due - I'm quite liking your style OP.

AndyWarholsOrange · 14/01/2015 19:43

Definitely not a stalker, those threads just stick in my mind as they were, erm, memorable Wink

I buy the slightly more expensive lean option in the supermarket.
I generally brown it in the pan with a little fry light. I've never seen fat like that come off it.

Me too. I don't think I've ever seen mince so fatty that I've had to drain it. I only use mince for chilli and spag bol and I'm adding olive oil there with onions to brown it.

MsRyanGosling · 14/01/2015 21:15

I'll never be able to buy, look at or cook with mince in the quite same way every again.

Just when you think you've read everything - along comes some boiled mince.

Sistedtwister Did you know that Hirsty is now a woman called Stephanie and left the show?

Tangofandango · 14/01/2015 21:45

My mum always boils mince when making meat balls (so do I as that's how she taught me 40 years ago). She shapes the balls, boils them in salted water, the fat rises to the top which she then skims off. When most of the fat has been skimmed she adds a stock cube, herbs, seasoning, and Worcestershire sauce then simmers for as long as possible. The gravy reduces and is full of lovely flavours.

Her meat balls are the most delicious, tender, and flavoursome that I've ever tasted. Whenever she invites us for a meal we always ask her to cook meatballs as they are divine.

And for everyone turning their noses up at "sheep" mince (which I'm guessing is lamb) - what do you think is in shepherds pie??

RumbelowSale · 14/01/2015 22:01

We don't need the emoticon -just the words "picture this" is enough to send me into hysterics.

OP, you're a Legend in your own lifetimeGrin

Patsyandeddie · 14/01/2015 22:07

Why the fxxx would you boil mince?

gincamelbak · 14/01/2015 22:30

Mince cooks quickly. Stick some onion in with it and fry it for a minute or so. Drain fat off and then add some tasty ingredients. Surely if you boil it it will be a funny grey colour!
