To ask you if you boil and cool your mince meat before cooking it?

Because this is what mine looks like after boiling and cooling, and I took the pic after removing another heaped spoonful. It's sheep mince from my local butchers which sells halal meat (not that makes a difference). It's always the same.

I wonder what makes it have such high fat content. I think it was meat from the leg.

I feel sick at the thought of boiled mince.

Years ago at uni I did a healthy eating/obesity presentation where I made two lots of bolognase. One with lean, quality mince and the other with value mince.

The difference in the amount of fat produced was scary.

GraceFox · 13/01/2015 22:05

Bertha, browning first, then boiling, gives a very different result to boiling and rinsing. They aren't comparable.

SilentBob · 13/01/2015 22:07

Sorry for Mis-reading, OP.

Told you I was a grumpy arse today.

ChunkyPickle · 13/01/2015 22:11

Goodness, you do learn some weird new things on mumsnet.

I would never have dreamed of boiling mince, let alone boiling then rinsing, then cooking again.

Takes all types I suppose.

Patsyandeddie · 13/01/2015 22:23

Why the fxxx would you boil mince, I just fry the onions and chuck it in!

Bartlebee · 13/01/2015 22:24

God, this thread should come with a warning.

I feel a bit sick.

Janethegirl · 13/01/2015 22:26

I'm not sure I dare eat mince again unless I've cooked it Grin:
There are apparently many vile ways of boiling it, washing it with water, sieving it....wtf!
If you are picky with fat, don't eat ready bought mince, buy good quality steak or lamb and mince the stuff yourself (too fucking obvious for some people though) Grin.
Then cook it properly ffs.

BigRedBall · 13/01/2015 22:27

PatsyandEddie dear, this is MN. Feel free to write FUCK and be proud.

Janethegirl make sure you write about how to mince your own meat in your cookery book. It'll make a riveting read.

Janethegirl · 13/01/2015 22:34

If you need instructions on how to mince meat, you really need a cookery book, a very basic one though.
Would I need to provide pictures though, for clarity??GrinGrin

Its not very often I need to drain my (non-boiled) of fat, but just chuckingin a slice of bread in will soak up any fat you done want you can then eat that if want

Oldraver · 13/01/2015 22:42

doh, drain my mince

Janethegirl · 13/01/2015 22:43

Having to relate to vulgarity OP? Unable to make a reasonable retort? How common! Shock

yummumto3girls · 13/01/2015 22:57

Hang in there OP,I know it's not nice to get a slating but you really have to see that what you are doing is a complete waste of time and wrong. Why bother eating meat if you take all the natural flavour out of it, you'd be much better eating quorn. And browning meat means frying it to give it some colour, not adding the pre boiled water and boiling it again! Sorry but I think it's lucky that you haven't given anyone food poisoning. You have some real issues if you feel you need to go to these lengths to get the fat out of food.

PuzzleRocks · 13/01/2015 23:12

Op you are bloody bonkers for boiling mince but you are an absolute sport and I for one would very gladly eat your food and then possibly my hat.

GormlessNormTheGardenGnome · 13/01/2015 23:17

I chuck chopped onions, pork mince (lamb is horrible) and whatever veggies are in the freezer into the casserole dish, cover with boiling water and maybe stock if I remember and then shove it in the oven for 3 or 4 hours. Occasionally I remember to stir it or add some more water if it's boiled dry. Never occurred to me to remove any fat, or rinse anything, and i never understood the point of browning anything first. Tastes fine to me. But to be fair, I'm a shit cook and i get no enjoyment from eating whatsoever.

RumbelowSale · 13/01/2015 23:51

bigredball - that picture? I think I love youGrin

And I'd eat your mince any time.( Christ, after my declaration of love please don't think I'm talking in some sort of code, will you!Blush

RumbelowSale · 13/01/2015 23:54

ouryve one 't' it is. Thanks.

slithytove · 14/01/2015 02:33

My mum does this Confused

I dry fry mince then drain it into the sink, then cook immediately with onion, celery, lentils and seasoning, plus whatever extras I need to make my specific dish. Then when fat has hardened I bin it. Hardens quicker in a sink of water.

munchkinmaster · 14/01/2015 03:07

Mil asked me what we wanted to eat at hers . I opted for mince as I reasoned that's something you can't really mess up (mil is an awful cook).

After I'd made my Hobson's choice dh warned me "she doesn't cook it like you, you know browning it and stuff.'

Right enough mince was placed in water and baked in the oven. It was like a charred cheapie burger floating in greasy water.

PongPong · 14/01/2015 04:26

Could be my pain meds (at 4.30am!) but I just actually LOL'd at the last pic posted by the OP.

High five OP Grin

Did you eat it? Confused

DoraGora · 14/01/2015 07:13

Lamb is horrible? What kind of statement is that? I'm pretty sure that a lot of people in the Middle East, who rely on it, are going to be pretty disappointed.
