To think you don't need shops like Lidl/Aldi

If you can buy a chicken to serve 5-6 in Waitrose for £2.94??
I also get 450g minced beef for £2.20. They have lots of special offers on at the moment.
I honestly think if you take advantage of offers and cook mostly from first principals you can still be very frugal in Waitrose/Sainsburys.

I can't get a free range chicken for £5 at Tesco or Waitrose/Ocado. So I go there mainly just for free range chickens and chicken breast.

SaucyJack · 13/01/2015 14:04

Dunno about Waitrose, but Sainsbury's Basic is absolutely nowhere near the quality of Aldi's standard range.

Besides which, no one "needs" Sainsbury's or Waitrose any more or any less than they "need" Aldi or Lidl. They're all just different supermarket chains.

Strange thread.

itsnotjustastick · 13/01/2015 14:04

they are called loss leaders and are there to attract people into the shop. Its the cost of the 5 other things that take your bill to over £30. Thats a weeks shop for me.

I dont go to waitrose becuase its like taking a kid to a sweetshop with 2p and saying.....

look at all this lovely stuff...ah no wait a minute..... you can only have that thing there.

Not hugely satisfying shop when you are as skint as i am.

ilovesooty · 13/01/2015 14:05

I'm nowhere near a Waitrose. I find Aldi very cost effective.

LeftyLoony · 13/01/2015 14:06

Lidl has quality at good prices for all things. Not just the two you've listed there.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/01/2015 14:06

You don't 'need' any supermarket. Raise hens, grow your food and what have you...

A chicken doesn't serve 6 in this house. Is it the 'magic' MN chicken?

Gileswithachainsaw · 13/01/2015 14:06

Yes you can. If you have time to go to various places for best deals on different things. costing time petrol and bus fares.

aldi and lidl enable people to buy everything they need in one place.

It's better to be able to buy fresh food cheap than rely on frozen stuff from the likes of Iceland

FightOrFlight · 13/01/2015 14:07

AIBU to suspect this is a Snob Shopping By Stealth thread?

If you don't want to shop at Aldi/Lidl then don't.

I don't think it's necessary to have Mothercare shops as I'm menopausal but hey, there you go Hmm

wigglesrock · 13/01/2015 14:07

I find Sainsburys very expensive for meat, we don't have Waitrose or Aldi - it's a wonder I manage to shop at all. I use Lidl for lots of different things.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 13/01/2015 14:07

But those offers in Waitrose only last until 27th January and half of them weren't in stock - Aldi's prices are the same every day of the week - that's one thing I like about them - you don't have to chase offers to pay a fair price.

Yes you can get away with not spending a lot in Waitrose or Sainsburys, but some things, fruit and veg especially, are extremely expensive compared with Aldi and Waitrose especially has a lot of tempting naice things that are hard to resist. Just putting a couple of 'oh that looks nice' items into your basket can completely blow your budget out of the water.

I went to Waitrose's 'half price event' last week and found some bargains, but I also found mince that was about the same price at half price for similar quality to what what I usually buy at a posh farm shop, where the price is always that price. Some things still looked expensive at 'half price'.

Flossyfloof · 13/01/2015 14:09

My nearest Waitrose is miles away. What should I do?

Blackout234 · 13/01/2015 14:09

Well some weeks without aldi or lidl i wouldnt afford to eat more than noodles.

Sprinkfest · 13/01/2015 14:11

Yabu. Very silly thread.

MarjorieMelon · 13/01/2015 14:14

What a bizarre thread?

hiddenhome · 13/01/2015 14:17

I prefer the quality of the things in Lidl Smile

randycheeseburger · 13/01/2015 14:18

No Waitrose here, we only have a Sainsburys in this town and I don't like going there for more than bread and milk, there is a lidl half an hours drive away and although some items are cheaper I can't do a full shop. I have just started doing Tesco orders every week and that suits me. 10 mins on a pc and delivered to my door for £2.

ghostyslovesheep · 13/01/2015 14:18

you might not op but I do ... I can't feed a family of four and our cats for £55 at waitrose

Waltonswatcher · 13/01/2015 14:20

A chicken deserves a life far nicer than a couple of pound buys it . YABU for not shopping free range.

Chandon · 13/01/2015 14:20

Waitrose has lots of offers at the moment, but that won't last.

And Lidl is still cheaper, as a free range chicken is £5.

Fruit and Veg at Waitrose costs about twice as much as at Lidl

as does bread. And desserts/cheese/washing powder, loo roll etc!

BertieBotts · 13/01/2015 14:21

Well I'd have to get on a plane to go to Waitrose so I'll keep my local Aldi and Netto thank you Grin Netto's great. I can do a (small) full shop and be in and out in 15 minutes. Aldi you wait at least that long in the queue, they appear to have some kind of policy of opening as few tills as possible and only open a second when people start cluttering up the aisles trying to queue.

I do miss corner shops though.

JoanHickson · 13/01/2015 14:22

Thanks for the heads up. I shall be going to wait rose for some meat.

TheFairyCaravan · 13/01/2015 14:22

We had a free range turkey from Aldi for about £30 at Christmas, you wouldn't have got that at Waitrose.

I need to start shopping more at Aldi, but need DH or DS2 to come so it's not as convenient as online.

elQuintoConyo · 13/01/2015 14:24

I'm in Spain. Spanish shops are shit (sorry, Spain. Love your sausages Wink ). What am I supposed to do - especially at Christmas when traditional lunch here is 'soup' made of stock and pasta shells, followed by fucking canalone. I need gingerbread biscuits and stollen and roll-out marzipan. Their veg is waaaaaaay better than the hypermarket Carrefour next door, Lidl do a better selection of bread (rather than the choice of a bagette... or two bagettes).

Obviously I can't comment on price comparisons with other UK shops and have only set foot in Waitrose once but as a blanket comment, it's a bit daft OP.

IrianofWay · 13/01/2015 14:25

I dont shop at Aldi just because it's cheap. I also shop there because I like the food and the lack of 'choice' makes it quick and straightforward to shop there. I go on thursday in my lunch hour and it takes me 20 minutes to do a full weeks shop for 5 humans and 3 animals. I don't like shopping - I don't want a retail experience.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 13/01/2015 14:26

Lidl's croissants fresh from their bakery are absolutely delicious! And probably the fifth of the cost of a Waitrose one. Waitrose is overpriced and you can just about get a bargain in their offers. I guess you don't like seeing the "riff raff" from the cheaper supermarkets
