To think you don't need shops like Lidl/Aldi

If you can buy a chicken to serve 5-6 in Waitrose for £2.94??
I also get 450g minced beef for £2.20. They have lots of special offers on at the moment.
I honestly think if you take advantage of offers and cook mostly from first principals you can still be very frugal in Waitrose/Sainsburys.

I just like quality food at a good price. Aldi and Lidl happen to be much more constantly good at both of those things than most other supermarkets, so I'd rather shop there and get quality than go to waitrose and buy the cheapest, most basic stuff.

HesterShaw · 14/01/2015 19:38

Jeez Chunderlla, just because people have brought up animal welfare (and let's face it, it's pretty relevant on a thread about a £2.94 chicken and a farmer of animals agreed with that ) it doesn't mean no one gives a shit about human beings! Extrapolating, much?

Anyway, Lidl loo roll is fine. Works for my backside anyway...

Hatespiders · 14/01/2015 19:43

You might like to hear a very funny song sung by an Irishman. It's on Youtube, and it's called 'The Ballad Of Lidl And Aldi'. I've played it loads of times and it still makes me laugh.

(I'm sorry I can't do a blue link thing; technology's beyond me.)

HappenstanceMarmite · 14/01/2015 20:09

Well I unfortunately had the misfortune of buying Waitrose loo roll. Wasted most of it trying to unroll it and get it to roll off a complete sheet without it splitting and only 1/2 the side unrolling. Really annoying.

More than 'annoying'. Nothing short of a public flogging for whichever clown is responsible for designing such an abhorrent product! (Can you tell I have bog roll OCD?)

HappenstanceMarmite · 14/01/2015 20:11

Aldi does a brilliant Shea Butter loo roll which feels lovely and had the added advantage of making the bathroom smell very nice indeed. At a bargain £3.49 for 9 rolls.

Come on Waitrose shoppers tell me that hasn't swayed you

Sold.

DurhamDurham · 14/01/2015 20:14

You won't regret it !

RedSoloCup · 14/01/2015 20:17

I agree with OP. I have tried both Aldi and Lidl a few times with not much success as I find I can't get everything there and have to go elsewhere to top up which makes it less cost effective.

Plus ours are so busy now you can rarely park at either.

Also there was an ad in the newspaper the other day with a basket comparing to Sains which was say £5 more.

I looked at every item and worked out the max I would pay for that (I shop in asda / tesco /sains / co-op at various times for various reasons) and I worked the price out lower than the aldi price.

If you shop to offers and refuse to pay more than a certain amount (i.e. I won't pay more than £1 for a jar of sauce, I won't pay more than 50p for chopped tomatoes, I won't pay more than £2.50 for a medium block of cheddar) I really don't think it matters where you shop.

RedSoloCup · 14/01/2015 20:20

Co-op has nine rolls of quilted velvet for £3.50 from today....

Just saying

FrancesNiadova · 14/01/2015 20:32

I like Aldi washing up liquid...
I like their tampons too...
I don't like being Premenopausal though! Blush

moggiek · 14/01/2015 20:33

Our Aldi and Lidl are always chock full of people that I've always thought of as 'snobs'. Good quality and value are the same no matter what your income bracket.

ScotsWhaHae · 14/01/2015 20:37

But all that effort is exhausting RedSolo. I don't want to have to stick to offers. That loo roll will be £6 next week, £23 another week then a barginious 29p another. Who can be arsed with that?

cottageinthecountry · 14/01/2015 20:57

If you're an OCD loo roll neat freak you need to try their embossed stuff, comes in a pack of 10 and it's really thick so you never find random torn bits. You tend to use slightly less as well cos it's thick, however sheets are a little smaller and it's therefore more suitable for the petite (or the anally retentive).

LightastheBreeze · 14/01/2015 20:58

Surely most people buy Andrex loo rolls, you can get them anywhere can't you, lots of own make stuff is a bit hard.

BlueEyedWonder · 14/01/2015 21:13

I did a weekly shop in Sainsburys every week for years. After they wrote to me basically saying I would be getting less nectar points this year, and in a bid to reduce the weekly bill, I decided to switch the weekly shop to Aldi and Tesco. I was spending around £80 per week in Sainsburys and am now managing on a budget of £60 per week.
I'm not tempted by things not on the list in Aldi. I buy meat, cheese, fruit, veg, bread and wine there. I go to tesco for branded goods I like such as cereal, tins, wash powder etc...
I swap my clubcard points for days out vouchers for the DC.

cottageinthecountry · 14/01/2015 21:16

Just had venison stew with mushrooms, broccoli and spuds with all ingedients from Lidl except the juniper berries and the oxo cube. Probably cost about £7 for four. Is that stealth boasting?

sanfairyanne · 14/01/2015 21:20

lidl is much better for msc fish and free range chicken, as well as everything else

ScotsWhaHae · 14/01/2015 22:03

I've bought andrex once, it was all the wee corner shop had and we'd ran out.

'Surely most people buy Andrex'

What a bizarre statement!

BertieBotts · 14/01/2015 22:09

German toilet paper is really something to admire actually. Much nicer than Andrex. The Americans marvel at it and try to sneak it home in their suitcases! But they only have 2-ply usually. Their plumbing is often easily blocked apparently which is why.

But no, none of your Andrex "luxury" 3-ply, German toilet paper is soft, 4-ply, never separates out into annoying separate plies (is that the right word? It doesn't really sound right but never mind...) and it's like wiping your arse on egyptian cotton.

Patsyandeddie · 14/01/2015 22:10

The quality of meat in lidl is a different class, I buy their free range pork and aged steaks all the time, different class!

LightastheBreeze · 14/01/2015 22:11

Andrex is a large brand, I imagine a lot of people buy it, more than Lidl own make, what's bizarre about that?

Patsyandeddie · 14/01/2015 22:11

Loo rolls are loo rolls, you need to get out more!!

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 14/01/2015 22:14

The problem with our Lidl is that you can't go in with a shopping list and guarantee you will get everything,l or even anything like everything, on it. Whereas in Waitrose you can. Including Izal toilet paper,. :)

LightastheBreeze · 14/01/2015 22:14

I do to Waitrose generally, no penny pinching here Grin

HappenstanceMarmite · 14/01/2015 22:31

Loo rolls are loo rolls, you need to get out more!!

It is because I get out a lot - and thereby experience nasty loo roll in public lavatories- that I am an OCD fusspot about the bog roll that I use when home. dear lord, how can anyone say "loo rolls are loo rolls"?!!

Sallyingforth · 14/01/2015 22:43

You're absolutely right, OP.

No-one needs Aldi and Lidl and you should all go back to Tesco and Waitrose. Please!

That way my local Aldi won't be so busy with all the customers who don't like having to shop around the big stores looking for one-off specials.
