No one says his in RL. They say private or fee-paying. I have never even heard someone refer to an "independent school" in RL, although you do hear the term used in the media.

I have only seen it used on here and think of it as nothing more than an abbreviation for independent school (which is what most of them are called as members of the Independent schools association). Abbreviations are used for all sorts of things on here that I never hear in real life: dd, DS, DH, DSS, DSD, SW.....
I don't find the word indie any more annoying than any other MN abbreviation.

I find independent fee paying schools a lot more cloying than any word used to describe them.

I just think on forums with a non uk based contingent it gets round the private / public school conundrum.

well said Soupdragon.

Only ever heard 'indie on mn and both my kids in fee paying education from 4 - 18 so I have had several school experiences..

It irritates me as does the word 'uni'. My colleague also refers to graduates as 'grads'. I may just chop her head off one day...

"When we all know they are full of girly emasculated boys and overbearing spoilt girls".

Yes, just like we all know that state schools are full of aggressive, buzz cut meatheads and girls with Croydon facelifts and knicker skimming short skirts

I rather think mrsruf's tongue was planted firmly in her cheek there.

seems an unnecessary comment I feel if that is the case

I hate the term Indie school. Sounds like someone trying to be like common people, they wanna do whatever common people do. (Except go to school with them)

Private school is a much better term.

My DC are at state school in a pretty naice area but the private schools here are still flourishing. There are some hummus-tastic conversations at birthday parties where the indie/private/public/state/common people mingle.
