To think "put some fucking clothes on!"

or at least wrap a towel round yourself FFS.

I go to the gym five days a week, usually in the morning. Every single day without fail there will be people having a shower after their workout. I don't have a problem with this as the showers are in cubicles rather than out in the open.

My problem is is that after they've finished showering you can be sure they will then strut naked out of the shower over to the lockers without bothering to wrap a towel around themselves. They will then stand naked for a bit sorting their clothes and shit out before getting dressed. It's always the same people too.

AIBU to think they should at least wrap a towel round themselves? And get dressed as quickly as possible?

Nobody wants to see them naked!

I did mention it to reception but they just gave me a look like this Hmm.

Me too Pacific. I also like the idea of being able to cover up all my fat bits.

Worra - I agree. The only ones I ever saw naked at the gym (I didn't stare, but nor was I going to face the wall) were the toned gym bunnies who couldn't resist a little show off as a reward for all their hard work. A mix of shapes, sizes and ages would be a good thing.

MehsMum · 11/01/2015 14:29

Modesty Apron Monitor. Grin

I can remember getting changed after a baby swimming session with a mixed group of Americans and middle-Europeans; I was the only Brit. The American women were all faffing about under towels. The middle-European women were wandering around starkers. I thought for about 2 secs: will I be British and dress rapidly facing the wall, go with Americans and their puritanical prudishness, or follow the path of the Czechs?

No brainer. I have never hidden under a towel since. Why make life difficult for yourself? OP, it's only nudity. YABU.

OnlyLovers · 11/01/2015 14:30

YABU and you should grow up. Good for the reception staff.

It's a changing room. What do you expect?

I find it interesting that in this kind of discussion, the 'offending' naked people are always characterised as 'strutting around' naked, 'showing off', 'flaunting themselves' etc. IMO this could not be further from the truth; in both the gyms I've recently been a member of, there are sometimes women in the changing rooms naked (including me) and NO ONE could be said to be 'strutting' about. I also see a range of shapes and sizes and, actually, the lithe young 'gym bunny' types seem to prefer wrapping themselves in towels and using the changing cubicles.

The only person I've seen 'strutting about' in the changing room in recent memory was fully dressed in her gym gear and was standing in front of the full-length mirror, talking on the phone and simultaneously posing and turning this way and that and looking at herself.

Fair dos though; she had a great, fit-looking body. Grin

I've never been to a gym but I can just imagine that SirChenjin

At my local pool, the changing rooms are full of people of all sizes/ages and there is generally quite a bit of nudity, as one might expect in a changing room.

I'm just totally 'meh' about it and don't notice it unless someone's bending over in front of me, showing everyone what they had for breakfast Grin

Having said that, I've probably mellowed with age because as a teenager/young woman I was quite prudish about nudity.

slanleat · 11/01/2015 14:34

I have no issue with people being naked after a shower in the gym/swimming pool... I did however think it was a step too far when one woman changed her tampon beside her locker Shock

WorraLiberty · 11/01/2015 14:36

slanleat!!! Shock

God that's disgusting

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2015 14:37

Ah but is it disgusting? It's just normal isn't it? Like nudity.

Hatespiders · 11/01/2015 14:37

Did anyone mind those communal trying-on rooms in clothes shops? I remember they used to be everywhere but I haven't seen one for quite a time. I used to like them because you could see several different clothes being 'modelled' at once (I'm incurably nosey) and chat to the other customers, ask opinions etc (I'm incurably chatty)

PrimalLass · 11/01/2015 14:38

Prudish and puritanical is just as derogatory as preening, strutting etc. I'm not a prude, I just don't like being naked.

SirChenjin · 11/01/2015 14:38

Bloody hell slanleat Shock

Was this in the UK? Was everyone terribly British about it, or did someone tell her to take her foof to the toilet?

Hatespiders · 11/01/2015 14:42

Sparklingbrook If you can't see the difference in acceptability between getting dried/changed in the nude in front of others and changing a tampon in public you must be a bit strange!

OnlyLovers · 11/01/2015 14:44

Primal, I object to terms like 'strutting' being thrown about in discussions like this primarily because IME, it's demonstrably untrue that people with no clothes on in the changing rooms are 'strutting' or showing off. I've never seen such behaviour.

FightOrFlight · 11/01/2015 14:44

Ah but is it disgusting? It's just normal isn't it? Like nudity

It's normal to be naked in a changing room.
It's normal to change your tampon in a toilet.

Not quite the same thing imo.

It's normal to have a dump but I wouldn't expect someone to do it next to the lockers.

It's more about the sanitary issues with the tampon business.

SirChenjin · 11/01/2015 14:45

I think Sparkling was being a bit tongue in cheek there Smile

wonders whether tongue in cheek is appropriate for tampon foof and nakedness thread

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2015 14:45

No I am just a bit norty/facetious Hatespiders. Grin

TBH gym changing rooms sound grim all round. I will steer clear.

PacificDogwood · 11/01/2015 14:45

Ah, but getting changed in a changing room is what it's for - i.e. shed one lot of clothes for another (with an optional shower in between).
Changing tampons is of course a perfectly normal activity but not one for public display normally - people over the age of toilet training would be discouraged from weeing in a changing room too, wouldn't they?

ZammoMcGuire · 11/01/2015 14:45

i just think its quite normal to walk out of shower with a towel around you, take towel off, dry self, put on bra and pants then do the rest of you.

I don't think putting on make up while fully naked is horrendous or anything, just not the way I would do it. ergo wrong Wink

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2015 14:49

i just think its quite normal to walk out of shower with a towel around you, take towel off, dry self, put on bra and pants then do the rest of you.

That sounds like a good, sensible way of doing things Zammo. But don't forget fugging the whole place out with spray on deodorant and clouds of talc. Grin

FightOrFlight · 11/01/2015 14:49

Whoops! Missed the TIC element there. Probably due to years of seeing comments on the issue of breastfeeding where people say 'it's normal to have a shit but you wouldn't do it in public'.

needs to pay more attention before commenting

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2015 14:51

OMG don't mention breastfeeding. Although reading this I probably wouldn't do it in a gym changing room.

PrimalLass · 11/01/2015 14:54

Onlylovers is it also not demonstrably untrue that people who would rather change under a towel are not prudish or puritanical?

Or more accurate that people are not all the same. Some may strut. And some may be prudish (a horrible word).

PacificDogwood · 11/01/2015 14:59

Well, I am a towel wrapper (or would be if I went to a gym….) but other people's nudity just does not only not bother me, but I also just don't find very interesting, so they can do as they please

It's more of a practical issue for me - I don't like my boobs dragging on the floor Grin

PrimalLass · 11/01/2015 15:00

And just because you have never seen such behaviour does not mean it does not happen.

Looks like there is just as much judging of people who prefer not being naked in public.

BIWI · 11/01/2015 15:03

I'm not sure I would strut. It might make my wobbly bits wobble too much. I think I'd prefer to go for gentle gliding.

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2015 15:09

I hope all this strutting/gliding is in flip flops with a view to verruca avoidance.
