To ask if anyone's child DIDNT get sick loads from nursery and school?

DS starts tomorrow. He doesn't really need to go as such, but I thought it would be good for him so I do have choice here.

He's rarely sick and recovers quick - I on the other hand have spent Dec/jan unwell with a day or 2 here or there being ok ish in between

Is it ALWAYS the rule that they get sick tons at first? Hmm

Please someone tell me of their magical unicorn child who continued to not get sick after starting nursery?!

DD and DS got plenty of sniffles in their first few months at nursery (started at 1) but haven't had anything significant for ages. Neither have come down with any sickness bugs lasting more than 24 hrs. (I put this down to my lax housekeeping keeping their immune systems robust Wink)

worldgonecrazy · 08/01/2015 12:43

No - had one day of for feeling a bit below the weather but no proper illnesses. I think it's because they spend a lot of time outdoors and not much time huddling over desks.

Quenelle · 08/01/2015 12:47

DS went to a childminder from age 1 until 2.6. Then to preschool, then school. He had never vomited in his life until he was in year 1 Autumn term. Then he got the bug that was going round and was sick a couple of times. He's had a couple of mild colds in that time but nothing else.

ShatnersBassoon · 08/01/2015 12:50

Mine didn't. Other than chicken pox, I don't think they've had an illness that has kept them home from school. Certainly no d&v. It's just the luck of the draw.

treaclesoda · 08/01/2015 12:51

don't worry, it's not a certainty that they get sicks loads at nursery and school. Neither of mine have.

It's luck of the draw though, so I'll not lie and insist that all kids come through unscathed.

spiderlight · 08/01/2015 12:56

Mine didn't. Two days off in two years' nursery (48-hour rule after diarrhoea), one day off in Reception with a nasty cold and three days off in Y1 with the world's mildest dose of chicken pox. He does have the odd mild sniffle but rarely anything bad enough to keep him off school. He's only had nits once as well Grin

TheyLearnedFromBrian · 08/01/2015 13:00

No, nursery with first one from 18 months and no sickness at all. Like an ox. Others are the same, though not in nursery so early. Eldest has had headlice twice, and not badly (instant swoop!)

Yes, some runny noses, coughs etc. but nothing ever worth keeping off school or going to docs with. And none of us have ever had d&v bug or anything like that.

LiegeAndLief · 08/01/2015 13:04

Mine didn't either. Ds was in nursery from 10 months and didn't actually throw up (ever) until he was 4, and that was only once.

They are still remarkably robust and considering we both work and have no grandparents on tap we are very very lucky!

Threesoundslikealot · 08/01/2015 13:04

My three year old has been in nursery since 11 months. Other than chicken pox and a bout of nits she has been completely healthy ever since. Although, actually, I tell a lie, in that she went through a period of about a month where she had random loose stools and the nursery kept sending her home. But she was fine throughout so it was a bit of a mystery. No colds, no stomach bugs, nothing.

My one year old has never been in childcare outside the home and has had a few nasty colds!

IdaClair · 08/01/2015 13:05

Never had a day off nursery.

Never had a day off reception.

Had chickenpox in year one but in the holidays. Had one 2 day time off due to random vomiting.

Had nearly a week off in year two for perforated eardrums.

Never had a day off year three.

Hmm from preschool he got chicken pox, occasional tummy bug, conjunctivitis, hand foot and mouth, lots of colds and lots of coughs. That sounds a lot but it was over two years.

However he has been in school since August and only had one cold/day off. Probably better this way than getting all those bugs at school and missing loads of lessons.

DinosaurTrain · 08/01/2015 13:16

Thanks for the encouragements. God I hope we're lucky.

It's been so nice to feel confident smug up till now that he has a really good immune system

Coughs and colds. DD (now 6yo) had one day off school for a fever and two days for slapped cheek. She had chicken pox at 3.5 (a week off nursery) which DS then 18 months caught and DP (aged 35) got it again. We've been very lucky compared to some. Some kids just seem to be more prone to illness IMO.

DeWee · 08/01/2015 13:26

Dd1 started preschool at 2.9yo.
Since then she had 1 week off with chickenpox.
1.5 days off infant school with a sickness bug.
3 days off in year 3 with pneumonia (would have been more but it was end of term).
She's now in aged 14.
And has only had nits twice, and one was picked up from camp, not school, despite having waistlength hair.

Ds, and dd2 can have that amount off in a term! Certainly I think they have about that amount off with illness each year. (no nits though!)

a2011x · 08/01/2015 13:29

No shes very rarely ill and nursery makes no difference, she did however get chickenpox as it was going round the nursery.

CrapBag · 08/01/2015 13:52

DS had tonsillitis once at nursery, required 1 day off and 1 day on the sofa.

Since school (he is in year 2) he has been sick once, a week after I had a bug and was ill for days, he just throws up once and that's him down with the bug.

He had 2 nits in his hair once.

He still has no had chicken pox despite being around during it (kind of want it out of the way!)

I didn't bf either so can't put his great immune system down to that, he is just lucky. A cold is a sniffle for a day (but he doesn't half moan about it).

DD picks it up a bit more but not like you hear generally about children getting this that and the other all the time.

Hoppinggreen · 08/01/2015 13:56

Dd got everything
DS didn't, even f he's a bit poorly he's just sleeps more and then is ok.
He was off preschool once in 2 years with Scarlett fever and it was more that he was contagious rather than ill - GP kept saying " he should be a lot more poorly"
DS is now 6 and hasn't had a day off school yet either, hs sister is in year 5 and has not ever had 1 certificate for a full terms attendance ( not that we care)

SugarplumKate · 08/01/2015 14:02

Ds (no 4) didn't. He has never been off Pre-school in a year and a half (until next week when he is having an operation). He has 3 older siblings who have probably passed on every germ going to him though, so he has probably built up an immunity!

JanSales · 08/01/2015 14:07

Neither of mine did/have

DD had serious flu as a baby, but since then (she is now 6 yrs old) she has never had a day off sick, and has been through wraparound daycare, nursery and is now at school.

DS (10) has also rarely ever been ill. Nits galore, though!

Goingintohibernation · 08/01/2015 14:10

DS never did. He had more minor coughs and colds when he first started at preschool, but never enough to need to keep him at home. He got chicken pox at about 3, but he got that from his cousin, so nothing to do with preschool. Since starting proper school two years ago he has had one day off as far as I can remember. Hopefully you will be lucky.

KentonArcher · 08/01/2015 14:12

Mine are now 12 and 8 (Year7 & 3), both went to nursery 3 days a week before starting reception. I can't remember the last time either of them had a day off school. I'm actually questioning my mothering now, wondering whether I've actually not noticed them being poorly! Neither of them picked up bugs or ever suffered from ear infections. I admit to being a bit slack with household cleanliness too. Hmm

Nits? Every single term without fail!!

HellBoundNothingFound · 08/01/2015 20:56

DD (6) has only missed 4 days of nursery and school, combined, due to illness. She rarely gets anything, and when she does, it's out within 12 hours. I, on the other hand, am not so lucky thanks to having a shit stomach Grin

marne2 · 08/01/2015 21:11

Mine picked up quite a lot at nursery and in reception, stomach bugs, ear infections, tonsillitis, colds and virus's. Now they are 8 and 11 and rarely get ill ( other than this horrid cold at christmas ).

BingBong36 · 08/01/2015 21:13

No. ds is 6 and has had only had 1 day off at school and pre school.

Ds 2 no sick days as yet and has been at pre-school since sept going 3 days a week.
