To be worried about the Ched Evans threads on here

Sorry but this does seem like a witchunt to me. Many of the posters (who have signed the petition) obviously have little knowledge of the case. At one point a poster said Sports Direct would withdraw sponsorship if Evans was NOT signed and immediately others were vowing to boycott. Laughable and shows the level of thought before clicking. Online justice and the court of public opinion, not for me. As for expecting football, an industry corrupt from the very top (Sepp Blatter) and inherently sexist, to show any moral stance, get real.

So because there are things wrong elsewhere, we should ignore this wrong thing too? I can't agree.

Sallystyle · 08/01/2015 08:29

Can I ask a genuine question?

Why was McDonald (that is his name, right?) found not guilty? I believe Ched raped her and I also don't want him to play football ever again, but I don't understand how he got away with it? surely she was too drunk to consent to sex with him as well?

Can anyone tell me on what grounds he was found not guilty?

YonicSleighdriver · 08/01/2015 08:30

I was on the thread, corky. I corrected those who had got the wrong impression as did the original "hypothetical" question poser. Four or five posters only were mistaken, IIRC. All saw and thanked for the correction.

Yes, it sometimes happen on MN and doubtless on all forums that someone misreads and quotes a post and others then read that post.

Separately, companies that continue to sponsor Oldham after CE's signing, if it concludes, may be boycotted. There are more than those four or five posters considering doing this for SD and its associated brands such as Slazenger and Lillywhites.

YonicSleighdriver · 08/01/2015 08:34

U2, the jury does not give the grounds for their decisions.

A strong possibility is that they could not say beyond reasonable doubt that CM had a reasonable belief in her consent. CM had been with the victim a lot longer - met her in the street, got a taxi with her, talked to her and went into a hotel room with her.

CE never met her, let himself into the room without her knowledge and penetrated her a couple of minutes later.

The judge directed the jury they could reach the same or different verdicts on both.

TheWordFactory · 08/01/2015 08:35

Boycotting certain businesses is not a witch hunt. It is a legitimate exercise of democratic freedoms ( unlike raping someone ).

Organisation of boycotts on the internet is also an exercise is democratic freedom. Funnily enough it's not allowed in China or North Korea ...

ApocalypseThen · 08/01/2015 08:35

Why was McDonald (that is his name, right?) found not guilty?

She went to the hotel with him which the jury chose to interpret as consent. Convicted rapist Ched Evans just showed up.

YonicSleighdriver · 08/01/2015 08:36

I meant "couldn't say beyond reasonable doubt that CM didn't have a reasonable belief", I think - hope it's clear what I'm trying to say!

Sallystyle · 08/01/2015 08:38

Thank you Yonic. That makes a lot of sense.

I knew that the jury couldn't say why they found him not guilty so I worded that question badly Grin

ZingTheGreat · 08/01/2015 08:40

is witchunt a clever anagram? are you with c*nt?

Sallystyle · 08/01/2015 08:41

Oh and I think it is great how the majority of MN's have signed these petitions. I think it is disgusting the way this woman has been treated and sickening that he can go back to his job in the public eye.

If she is reading I think she would be overwhelmed by the support.

Sallystyle · 08/01/2015 08:41

Grin Zing

PetulaGordino · 08/01/2015 08:47

Viviennemary there is such a petition atm

ithoughtofitfirst · 08/01/2015 08:48

Hahaha with cunt.

Brilliant.

YonicSleighdriver · 08/01/2015 08:50

The second petition plus the "live example" of this case will hopefully prompt policy statements down the line from the FA.

myfallingstar · 08/01/2015 08:50

The only place for justice to handed out is in a court room this is modern day pitch folks

Carrie5608 · 08/01/2015 08:51

for those of you who say 80000 people have signed a petition online. That leaves about 50 million in England who haven't. Whatever the rights and wrongs of this case I am a little uncomfortable with the assumption that if 80 to 100000 people have signed a petition it represents the thoughts of the majority it does not.

I do feel their s a witch hunt mentality here but having said that he couldn't goback to teaching, nursing, pharmacy, accountancy etec etc with a criminal conviction. If you feel football should be added to that list then that is what the campaign should be about.

IMO England has a long history of letting rapists, murderers etc away almost completely and that is the real disgrace. Eg. child killers who get new identities.

myfallingstar · 08/01/2015 08:52

I will however say still to much focus on him and not how his victim has been hounded personally instead of raIsing my pitch folk at him I put my name to a rape charity last night

I couldn't agree more, Corky. For some reason MNers (and MN HQ) seem to think mob rule is acceptable in certain cases. We have a justice system for a reason, and its whole foundation is based on the principle of impartial justice, hence why victims don't get to decide guilt or punishment.

He's been sent down, and now he's out on licence. His reputation has been destroyed and his career pretty much has been too. At what point does 'punishment' (or vengeance) become enough?

I will be very interested to see the reaction if Evans succeeds in his appeal.

YonicSleighdriver · 08/01/2015 08:55

I don't think people are generally claiming that this is a further act of justice. It's an act of consumer choice.

EatSleepRaveRepeat · 08/01/2015 08:56

I think if Ched Evans had raped a man we would not be needing this discussion as no football club would touch him. But typically within a certain percentage of this county women are fair game.

corkysgran · 08/01/2015 08:56

Zing why am I a cunt because I have a different opinion to you?

YonicSleighdriver · 08/01/2015 08:57

"I will be very interested to see the reaction if Evans succeeds in his appeal."

He has not been granted permission to appeal. The CCRC is reviewing his case. Less than 4% of cases they review are even granted permission to go forward to appeal.

JapaneseMargaret · 08/01/2015 08:57

Petition signed, thanks.

ZingTheGreat · 08/01/2015 08:58

corky

I didn't say you were, did I? but he is.
I asked if you were with him. seemingly you are.
