To think this delivery was too early

CheshireSplat · 07/01/2015 08:48

We had a delivery scheduled for today. Any time. Large delivery so someone needed to be in.

The driver rang at 6.40 this morning to say he would be here at 7 am. And he was. Is it just me or is this all ridiculously early? I was up as I have a 8 week old baby but if I'd have been at work I would have been asleep when he rang.

The guy was really nice and brought everything just inside the door although he said he wasn't supposed to go inside customers houses. So I'm loathe to complain about the time as he did more than he was supposed to.

AIBU to think this was all a bit early?

I've ordered online from various companies over the years. I've found many of them start their deliveries at 7am so it sounds like you were the first one of the day.

You've reminded me of an order I made years ago for a set of drawers/tallboy. I could only afford self assembly items at that time which turned out to be a good thing as I came home one day, the day before I was expecting them to be delivered, to find they'd already delivered. Luckily for me my lovely neighbour had taken them in for me. At least you got yours on the right day Grin

MissDuke · 07/01/2015 09:21

You were up anyway, why on earth would it even cross your mind to complain??? It is so sad how people think now :-( I am sure you weren't rushing to ring them to praise him for his excellent customer service?

Our postie woke me before xmas at 7am with a parcel delivery, he was very apologetic and said he assumed I was up as lights were on - however hubby had left them on when he went to work earlier. I wasn't in the least bothered, just glad to get my parcel, and felt bad for the postie who was stressed having to annoy people with deliveries at that time. I think they were trying to catch people before work to reduce the build up of parcels being returned back to the depot.

SoupDragon · 07/01/2015 09:25

"All day" delivery slots are often 7am -7pm so you should have ensured you were up anyway, even if your baby hadn't meant you were awake.

CheshireSplat · 07/01/2015 09:27

Ok I've admitted I was BU. Please stop!!! And to the PP who asked if I was going I ring up and give good feedback once I've checked the product I'll hopefully be able to add to the other 40 5 star reviews on their web site.

I'd have been thrilled too!

MiddleAgedandConfused · 07/01/2015 09:31

My husband often has stuff delivered to the house and for a while one delivery company turned up at 7 am every time.
My husband was furious - kids were still asleep, nobody was dressed; he thought it was our of order to come so early.
So for me, YANBU.

PisforPeter · 07/01/2015 09:34

Mothercare deliveries usually come at 7 where I live. I think it's quite convenient actually.

minibmw2010 · 07/01/2015 09:38

Somebody will always be the first delivery, they aren't going to wait till 9am to start and they called in advance. Sounds like a good service to me.

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/01/2015 09:44

Which company is this?

I loathe staying in all day waiting for deliveries only to.miss them due to being on the school run.

having spent am entire half term. trapped in the house with two kids waiting for deliveries that showed up at last minute (18:00) 7am would suit me perfectly can always go back to bed

feebeecat · 07/01/2015 09:50

I once opened our kitchen blinds at 7am to discover the shed, due to be delivered that day piled on front lawn - no idea when that arrived, they were remarkably quiet!!
That was better than the 4-8pm slot we had on Saturday before Christmas (guess somebody has to be last too though).
You now have a free day, enjoy it Smile

waithorse · 07/01/2015 09:50

From 7am is fine in my opinion, not any earlier though. I'd have been very pleased.

LingDiLong · 07/01/2015 09:53

Oh my God. You can't post a thread on Mumsnet at the moment without a pack of bloodthirsty hounds trying to rip you to shreds. The irony! Everybody getting het up about the OP being unfair on the poor delivery bloke while meanwhile they make a load of unpleasant, personal comments to the OP.

I am an early riser and can see that a delivery at that time would be very convenient for a lot of people. BUT I would be very surprised to be called at 6.40am by a delivery person. I have never, ever had a delivery that early. I would have assumed deliveries start at 9ish too because I've never had a delivery before that time before and despite the snarky comment from a PP about not everyone working 9-5, actually many services still ARE 9-5 or thereabouts. I actually think it would be good customer service on behalf of the company to let people know that they deliver that early - it could even be a selling point!

SoupDragon · 07/01/2015 10:12

I think a large number of delivery slots start at 7am so I wouldn't be surprised. Other than being surprised that they planned to deliver at the start of the day and not ruining my either day waiting in for them and then missing them :)

Really? Everybody made unpleasant, personal comments about the OP...? I think there were very, very few. In fact, I don't think there were any.

LingDiLong · 07/01/2015 10:28

Well SoupDragon, this must be one of those areas where real life and mumsnet life diverge dramatically. Like I say, I've never, ever had a delivery that early. Despite being pretty old and having had a load of deliveries over the years.

Of course not everybody on the thread was unpleasant but a fair few were:

"Having a baby doesn't give you the right to expect deliveries to be on your terms"

"you would be a plonker to complain"

"You're 'loathe' to complain?! Why has it even crossed your mind? I feel like people on MN are very quick to complain about things."

You were up, ffs! Why even contemplate complaining on the grounds that you mightn't have been??? Go and get on with your day.

"You were up anyway, why on earth would it even cross your mind to complain??? It is so sad how people think now :-( I am sure you weren't rushing to ring them to praise him for his excellent customer service?"

Harsh based on the OP. Seems to be a 'thing' on mumsnet lately. If the general consensus is that someone has been unreasonable it starts off with people mildly pointing this out and turns into a landslide of ridiculous, over the top insults.

I had one of those deliveries too. I heard a lorry atabout 6.30am.Made the mistake of putting a light on. They than tried to dump all the boxes in the hallway.

CheshireSplat · 07/01/2015 10:38

Ling, thanks for your post I thought some of the comments were a bit harsh but I probably shouldn't have said anything about complaining as I don't tend to complain!

Like you I was surprised to get a call at 6.40am. I thought there must have been a death in the family!

I think I'll step away from AIBU and back to dieting and de-cluttering threads!

I've had a washing machine delivered at 7am and Parcelforce regularly drop off at ours between 7am and 7.30am.

Better 7am tham 7pm in my opinion (I stayed in ALL yesterday waiting for a del;ivery of dog food that failed to turn up)

CheshireSplat · 07/01/2015 10:45

Thanks tough. I'm doing okay from a sleep point of view actually so shouldn't complain. Oops the c word again. Wink

That seems really early to me. DH and I get up at 8am most days...

lem73 · 07/01/2015 10:52

Sorry Ling but I think my particular comment was polite but honest. Most firms deliver between 7 and 7 so the OP was clearly first and the driver was kind enough to carry it in. Why be annoyed at all?

If you can describe my comment as ripping someone to shreds my goodness, I don't know what to say. There do seem to be a lot of people on MN who complain about trivial things.
I've had plenty of deliveries at that time and I've had more annoying experiences. I'm starting to hate how quick people are to complain about small things that go wrong. Delivery drivers work long hours and are under lots of pressure. It's a hard job imo. I actually make a habit now of calling to thank companies for good service.

SoupDragon · 07/01/2015 11:03

ling none of those are insults (apart from "plonker" but that's along the lines of buffoon) nor are they hRsh. Oft sure how they diverge from real life either as they are exactly the kind of response I would expect.

SoupDragon · 07/01/2015 11:09

Currys: 7am-7pm
Appliances Online - 7am -7pm
Yodel: 7am-9pm

DidoTheDodo · 07/01/2015 11:15

I have to leave for work at 7am so I'd be really delighted if a delivery came before then.
