I have always been a wensleydale and mature cheddar girl in the past but was bought a naice cheese board for christmas and thought I'd give them a go. Oh my god - they are delicious especially the blue stilton and the brie! What other cheeses should I try to continue my cheesey education?!!

Have been a gorgonzola addict since infanthood as has my dc.
Love stilton but I think Gorgonzola has the edge over it re texture and price.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 05/01/2015 19:37

Caerphilly cheese.

CheeseBuster · 05/01/2015 19:42

Second vote for Pont L'eveque and agree Brie is a poor mans Camembert. get the to the cheese monger! (They let you try everything)

nooyearnooname · 05/01/2015 19:44

Epoisse, vacherin, livarot, stinking bishop

CatsClaus · 05/01/2015 19:44

dolcelatte is a recent discovery...not a fan of blue cheeses, but it's very agreeable, soft almost. I find most veined cheeses too much.

another supermarket one is Pié D'Angloys...it's not as stinky as Epoisses but richer and creamier and much much tastier than the supermarket camembert....it's the same size as a standard small camembert in a russetty orange burgundy card box/tub

SparklingCurrant · 05/01/2015 19:44

The smell always puts me off tbh. I have never tried any.

itsveryyou · 05/01/2015 19:47

St Agur is my absolute fave. DH used to hate blue cheese before we met...I showed him the error of his ways and we're now embroiled in a wonderful smelly cheese-filled life together :0) If you can get a Merlot Bellavitano, it's gorgeous - not smelly per se, but soooo delicious.

Fatlegs · 05/01/2015 19:48

Hmmmmmm..........cheese

MrsFlorrick · 05/01/2015 19:50

Yes. vacherin is a must. Grin

There is a cheese shop called La Fromagerie just off Marylebone High St (I used to walk past on way home from work). It's cheese heaven.

Otherwise Ocado and Waitrose will do if you can't get to an actual cheese shop.

Oh and Taleggio cheese with olives and/or sundries tomatoes as a homemade pizza topping
Or Taleggio with mushroom and truffles as a pizza topping. (Am drooling on phone now).

agoodbook · 05/01/2015 19:50

and then the problem of which cracker to use - its always a 'debate' here on that :) Bath Olivers, / butter puffs/ oatcakes ?

Crumblevision · 05/01/2015 19:51

For the love of Jeff, don't eat Stinking Bishop with your fingers they stink for days and it isn't pleasant

OfaFrenchMind · 05/01/2015 19:52

Stinky, but slices of heaven: try Corsican Cheeses. They are to die for, but not for romantic diners!

RufusTheReindeer · 05/01/2015 19:52

Stinky Bishop is the stinkiest cheese I know

ZuleikaJambiere · 05/01/2015 19:53

My best friend (who knows me so well) got me a mail order gift box from a company called Pong, which stank of amazingness.

Lilymaid · 05/01/2015 19:54

just finished our Christmas Roquefort. Perhaps not so stinky but bags of taste. For stickiness I would suggest Munster.

crossparsley · 05/01/2015 20:00

Roquefort is my desert island cheese. hatespiders did you ask about sheep's cheese? My DH gets (mild) migraines with cow's cheese which is awful because he loves it, but so far is coping fine with goat and sheep. If you can eat sheep, it's not just feta-type, there's Roquefort or (I think) Strathdon Blue, made in NE Scotland.

crossparsley · 05/01/2015 20:02

PS and Wigmore! Sheep, a bit like Camembert. Which is the best cheese for luring a bear out from its cave.

timeforacheckup · 05/01/2015 20:04

Thank you for the tip crumble!!

If in London (Covent Garden) or Hove (Western Road, the Hove end), go to La Cave á Fromage - they do a cheese tasting plate and a glass of red wine for £20 (I think) - 6 cheeses laid out from mild to extreme, and they talk you through each one - it's a brilliant experience. They do a charcuterie plate the same way, too - each time I've been the cheeses and meats are different, and they are so knowledgeable. You get a basket of home baked bread with your tasting plate - and more if you need it. All the time you're surrounded by loads of different cheeses and preserves and meat, loads to look at - and of course they sell it all too!

timeforacheckup · 05/01/2015 20:11

That may be my birthday treat from dh sorted furry!

TSSDNCOP · 05/01/2015 20:12

Like a gruyere and a Camembert, DH likes a Roquefort and Stilton. We let the cheese monger pick the fifth as a wild card.

Ryvita thins have been popular this year, and I like Camembert spread on celery.

OP try this: get a Camembert in a box. Unwrap it, slit in half so you've got two O's. Sprinkle dried chile on the bottom O, put them back together, re-wrap and put back in box. Bake for 15 minutes. Serve with fresh baguette.

See you in cheese heaven.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 05/01/2015 20:18

I have a fucking heavenly recipe for Stilton pâté if anyone is interested. So addictive. No calories either. Nope.

SweetPeaPods · 05/01/2015 20:18

I love goats cheese. I'm just getting into hard goats cheese but my current favourite is Capricorn Somerset goats cheese
