To still after all these years find Fawlty Towers funny

They've been showing the series on Gold I think. It's still funny, unlike lots of comedy from years ago. Just watched the one with the rat and the health inspector. So funny. Anyone not find it so?

Thanks Etihad

Can anyone list the mixed up names on the sign without googling.

I remember Owly Farts, Farty Towels and Flowery Twats.

"Is this a piece of your brain?" ??

Twinklestar2 · 02/01/2015 07:34

Love them all! We do the quotes at home a lot to each other. My faves are Basil the Rat and Communication Problems.

Mrs Richards your glasses are there!!
What is witnit?!

And The Builders - which one is man with beard?!

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 02/01/2015 08:55

The builders, when O'Reilly keeps going on about the Good Lord.

O'Reilly: "The Good Lord made the world so we could all enjoy ourselves"

Basil: "My wife enjoys herself, I worry"

O'Reilly: "If the good Lord..."

Basil: "..is mentioned one more time I'll move you closer to him."

Do you remember when we were first manacled together? We used to laugh a lot.

Yes but not at the same time dear.

!!

Twinklestar2 · 02/01/2015 09:02

Pissed Manuel: Since leaving my 5 mothers and 6 brothers....!

Twinklestar2 · 02/01/2015 09:04

Can we get you on Mastermind, dear? Next contestant - Sybil Fawlty. Special subject - the bleedin' obvious.

I always say this to my husband Grin

I think a lot of the scenes in FT which could be seen as very racist were actually not at all. A lot of it was simply poking fun at the English upper class bigotry. A lot of what the major said was him satirising the whole system. It could never be compared to Love thy Neighbour where racism and bigotry was built right through the script. Faulty Towers was completely different and most people saw it for what it was...comedy genius.

I too am old enough to remember it first time around - when I thought it genius. These days it makes me cringe a bit.

Now Dad's Army on the other hand still makes me titter.

The talking Moose head! All episodes absolute classics and fine examples of searing wit!

Jill2015 · 02/01/2015 12:42

I love Fawlty Towers. A lot of my favourites have been mentioned on the thread.
I love Sybil and her endless repetition on the phone 'I know, oh I know...' Grin

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 02/01/2015 12:46

All the people saying it's racist, it's sexist, it makes you cringe a bit - could you explain why?

Only1scoop · 02/01/2015 12:57

Sybil....

If you love FT then you should go to this!

To still after all these years find Fawlty Towers funny
Clawdy · 02/01/2015 13:04

Watched it when it was first on, watched many episodes since, and have never for one moment seen anything racist or sexist in it. So many comedy series of that era are now unwatchable for that reason, but Fawlty Towers - no way. The intelligence of the writing sends up those attitudes,if anything.

iwashappy · 02/01/2015 13:14

Probably still my favourite comedy. The rat, the car and the tree branch, the wildebeests out the window. Absolute genius.

I see there are a few episodes being repeated tonight including the car and the tree branch one.

FreudiansSlipper · 02/01/2015 13:21

I love Fawlty Towers my favourite episode is with Mrs Richard's just brilliant from the first scene to the end

my favourite scene is with Sybil and Basil in bed. Sybil in her rollers, fully made up and wearing a chiffon frilly nightie Basil in striped pj's. Separate beds of course she is on the phone to her friend he is trying to read. She of course is reply over and over again Oh I knooowww and Basil snaps why is she bloody telling you then

not sure why it makes me giggle so much can not remember from what episode it is from but when I saw a programme about the making of the series John Cleese said it is his favourite scene and sums up their relationship

Sybil is my favourite character in the series she is fantastic

5Foot5 · 02/01/2015 13:27

All the people saying it's racist, it's sexist, it makes you cringe a bit - could you explain why?

My cringing has got nothing to do with any perceived sexism or racism. It is just I no longer find Fawlty's OTT manic style to be funny anymore. He seems like someone who is basically unstable.

clary · 02/01/2015 13:33

Well done with the names Talizorah

I went to bed trying to recall The Wedding Party and the Hotel Inspectors.

Which one has the talking moose head in??

dropyoursword I think Fatty Owls was one too.

TheOfficialPan · 02/01/2015 13:34

Flowery Twats

BaldricksWife · 02/01/2015 14:02

Clary - the talking moose was in the 'Germans' episode. Scuttles off to see when FT is on later.....................

I'm laughing just reading that!
I always loved the stairs/ small set of steps, in the hotel, where the bedrooms were, that seemed to serve absolutely no purpose.

TheOfficialPan · 02/01/2015 14:22

Things you may expect to see from a Torquay hotel window: The Hanging Gardens of Babylon: Krakatoa erupting: herds of wilderbeeste sweeping majestically across the plain: Sydney Opera House.

at the very least.
