To still after all these years find Fawlty Towers funny

They've been showing the series on Gold I think. It's still funny, unlike lots of comedy from years ago. Just watched the one with the rat and the health inspector. So funny. Anyone not find it so?

DD loves it too now.

Kind of hoping she doesn't go into school doing the hitler walk though Shock Blush

ghostyslovesheep · 01/01/2015 19:49

I love it - Mrs Richards is brilliant

and 'spoooons' ....

pissovski · 01/01/2015 19:54

it doesn't do it for me, although I do find some individual scenes funny.

I really enjoy Porridge and can watch it over and over (even though its older than me) so YANBU to still find FT funny.

RufusTheReindeer · 01/01/2015 19:55

We love Fawlty Towers as well

Have passed the love to ds1 so far

We also did a dining experience a few weeks ago, it was a great night!!

I do agree with those saying it's racist and sexist, it's very much of its time

RedButtonhole · 01/01/2015 19:58

Oh I love it. There are only 12 episodes and I've seen them all countless times but they still leave me in kinks. I love the one with the dead body.

My dad looks exactly like Basil Fawlty Grin

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 01/01/2015 20:03

I adore Fawlty Towers.

If anyone orders duck in a restaurant I can't resist saying- "What about the Duck?"

"oh, the Duck's off"

Keeps me amused anyway Grin

whitesandstorm · 01/01/2015 20:09

Definitely racist but I think I read somewhere that the Germans episode had the most hilarious scenes in sitcom history.

Not my fave, sorry. I always find all the slapstick stuff over-the-top and embarrassing, and the dialogue isn't very subtle or clever. But to be fair, I haven't seen one in a while so perhaps it went over my head and I would enjoy it more now. But I'm just not sure I could ever bring myself to like John Cleese. Michael Palin, on the other hand... fans self swoons dies

myleftfoot · 01/01/2015 20:18

Sabrina - "If you don't like duck, you're rather stuck " Grin

whitesandstorm · 01/01/2015 20:19

Given it some thought, I think ^The Psychiatrist" is my favourite. That one with the good looking fella who sneaks his girlfriend in. Basil hates him but ends up accidentally in the bedroom with the girl. Sybil gets the wrong idea and Basil starts tapping the wardrobe checking for "woodworm". Every time he did something crazy he was spotted by psychiatrist. So laugh out loud funny.

I am rather stuck - don't like duck myself!

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 01/01/2015 20:40

I think the psychiatrist might be my favourite too. So many bits - but the bit when he's in the wardrobe in the Australian girl's room, and she just sees his finger holding the door closed - then Sybil goes "Basil!" "Oh, hello, dear." kills me every time.

GretnaGreen · 01/01/2015 20:48

"Start! Start, you vicious bastard! Right, that's it! I'm going to give you a damned good thrashing!"

GretnaGreen · 01/01/2015 20:50

Oh, and the Psychiatrist. "There's enough material here for an entire conference" Grin

wanderings · 01/01/2015 20:50

Although I loved most of the episodes, I remember as a teenager not understanding the class references at all, especially in the episode "a touch of class".

"Have you seen the people in room six? They've never even sat on chairs before!"

"I just want to keep the riff-raff away, dear."

"Would you mind moving to that table? This is Lord Melbury's table, he always sits here."

RufusTheReindeer · 01/01/2015 21:11

The Germans

You started it

No we didn't

Yes you did...you invaded Poland!

Vee hav meat in zee building!!!

Debs75 · 01/01/2015 21:18

Love them all. I know some parts wouldn't get past now but they were classic then and are classic now. Every episode has me in stitches and they are all faves in our house

BackforGood · 01/01/2015 21:31

YANBU
It's hilarious. We use quotes from it all the time.
My teenage dd loves it - one of her favourite programmes.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 01/01/2015 21:32

I'm glad no one has said their favourite episode is the one where the major goes on about shooting n**rs, but a little surprised more of you don't find it racist.

BigcatLittlecat · 01/01/2015 21:36

Love it! We quote it all the time! This is Basil, this is Sybil, this is smack on head!

TheLostPelvicFloorOfPoosh · 01/01/2015 21:38

It is hilarious. I have the dvds and watch with the John Cleese commentary on - always cheers me up.

One of my favourite bits that I'm not sure was supposed to be as funny at the time is when the two old ladies try to cancel their fruit salads and Sybil says, "no, you can't - chef's already opened the can!!"

cardibach · 01/01/2015 21:39

I normally don't like slapstick, but I love Fawlty Towers Flowery Twats

BastardGoDarkly · 01/01/2015 22:22

Polly is brilliant, so is Sybil.

But yeah,I acknowledge is racist/sexist tendencies.

Forgot about the builders one! Brilliant.

SorchaN · 01/01/2015 22:32

I always saw the racist and sexist remarks as critiques of racism and sexism, e.g. the Major - the establishment figure - commenting on different ethnicities and then being so completely dense that it made his offensive comments ridiculous. But it's very uncomfortable to watch. Apart from that, it's hilarious.
