To be gutted and quite shocked that anyone would do this? Possible theft

Was in PC World today, we were sat at the sale desks with a salesman. We were going to buy something but didn't, another story but was told one price on entering the store then another.

In all the confusion I put ds (6) character wallet on the desk which contained his £20 Christmas money and was going to buy a toy in the sales. It also contained some pretend play money so quite clearly a child's wallet.

We left the store then realised an hour later and went straight back. I was really convinced that somebody would have handed it in, especially being a child's. But nobody has, the lady had a good look around the area where it was left and the salesman said that he left the desk straight away and didn't see anything.

I'm obviously very trusting and naive, gutted to think anyone would steal from a lid for £20.

I found £10 on the floor in Tescos and that paid for my shopping. What would have happened to it if I had handed it in? Finders, keepers is my motto. No-one ever handed in my lost property.

FunkyBoldRibena · 29/12/2014 21:59

I found £20 in the self serve in Asda [the person before had obviously asked for cash] and I handed it to the assistant and told her they would probably be back in for it in 10 mins. But apparently I am 'one of those thieving types'. Lol.

Ah that's good news!

Don't worry - it happens a lot. It happens a lot in my family . . .

DH once lost his new work blackberry when we were shopping. Delayed us leaving for home while he went to customer services at the mall. In a foul mood all the way home. As soon as we got home he was on the blower to IT at work "I'm sorry, I seem to have lost my new blackberry" while I toiled in with all the shopping, two small DCs and all their belongings etc. Angry I noticed that DS1's coat seemed a bit heavy. Guess what was zipped up in the pocket? Ohh yes - DS1's coat was the same colour as DH's - you've guessed the rest. If he had just helped with getting unpacked instead of leaving me to it he would have saved himself looking like a tit at work.

DH once lost his wallet on a plane going on holiday. To save me typing it all out it was all exactly the same as above. No, wait, it was actually even better! Ever tried searching an entire Jumbo Jet watched by pissed off aircrew who just want to go home? To calm him I suggested we wait until we had been through all the bags when we got where we were going before calling home to cancel cards. I was very busy organising the children/beds/food at our destination and while I was tearing my hair out doing all this I heard him on the phone cancelling all his cards "How odd," I thought, "I haven't seen him checking the bags." DD then produces the wallet from her bag where he had obviously absent mindedly put it. "I thought YOU were going to check all the bags" was his comment to me as I struggled with 3 overtired hungry kids, incl BF toddler. Angry Angry Angry And then of course I had to put everything on my card because he had cancelled all his! Reader, we are still married . . . Smile

That made me laugh balloonslayer, dp is usually the ditzy one with losing things, never leaves his keys/wallet in the same place. He's very pleased with himself tonight though as he found it in the car.

DS left his iPad (used for him to communicate before he had words) in the disabled child trolley in tesco once.

The trolley collector man found it and handed it in.

I was sure it was gone forever.

Haven't read the entire thread, OP, but in court theft includes theft by finding - if you pick up something that isn't yours and keep it then you are 'permanently depriving' the rightful owner of the object, so yes, hanging onto the wallet was theft. I hop for your little ones sake that it has been handed in after all.

BCBG · 29/12/2014 22:39

Just saw update - so glad it's turned up!

JuxaSnogUndertheMistletoe · 29/12/2014 23:40

I could have been a child who took it, and tomorrow the parent finds it and takes it back to the shop full of apology and embarrassment.

JuxaSnogUndertheMistletoe · 29/12/2014 23:44

Ah just seen the update. Even better!

BackOnlyBriefly · 29/12/2014 23:48

So it's your fault if someone steals from you? If I knew someone with that attitude I'd be very careful around them.

BackOnlyBriefly · 29/12/2014 23:49

Glad it worked out ok.

TooHasty · 29/12/2014 23:57

If you stealing a purse is bad, my DD went swimming yesterday in the snow and someone nicked her wellies leaving her in her sock feet!

Bulbasaur · 30/12/2014 00:57

Pyjamaramadrama All's well that ends well.

Don't worry, I have ADHD and this is the story of my life. Grin To the point I obsessively check my purse 3 times to make sure my phone is really in there.

I can't tell you how often I've absent mindedly put things in strange places. I've just sort of adopted Lune Lovegood's attitude of "things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end".

FunkyBoldRibena · 30/12/2014 07:54

So it's your fault if someone steals from you? If I knew someone with that attitude I'd be very careful around them.

No, it is your fault if you lose it. Nobody stole anything. Even if she hadnt found it, nobody still stole anything.

sanfairyanne · 30/12/2014 08:23

ouch TooHasty poor dd Sad

we sometimes have stuff nicked if we leave our car door or shed door open. that is totally our fault for our own forgetfulness as it wouldn't have happened otherwise. opportunistic theft. its still a crime though as well and no defence that it wasnt locked up. if you live somewhere with a lot of petty crime, you cant go round leaving stuff unlocked. it wont stay put.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 30/12/2014 08:58

[Fgrin]

I'm glad you found it. Happens to the best if us!

There are some depressing comments on this thread though. Massive amounts of victim blaming and acceptance that if we don't lock things away it's our own fault if they get stolen.
