To be gutted and quite shocked that anyone would do this? Possible theft

Was in PC World today, we were sat at the sale desks with a salesman. We were going to buy something but didn't, another story but was told one price on entering the store then another.

In all the confusion I put ds (6) character wallet on the desk which contained his £20 Christmas money and was going to buy a toy in the sales. It also contained some pretend play money so quite clearly a child's wallet.

We left the store then realised an hour later and went straight back. I was really convinced that somebody would have handed it in, especially being a child's. But nobody has, the lady had a good look around the area where it was left and the salesman said that he left the desk straight away and didn't see anything.

I'm obviously very trusting and naive, gutted to think anyone would steal from a lid for £20.

Report it as lost to police. If I found something in a shop I would absolutely not hand it in to the shop. Working in a police station I know that people who lose things in shops/pubs/clubs ask if things have been handed in there and told no. Months later the shops/pub/club clear out their found property and bring it to the police station - and there's all the stuff that people have been told has not been handed in. Don't expect it to be handed in to the police straight away though, with so many stations now shutting people will hand things in days, sometimes weeks after they find them when it is convenient to them.

Perfectlypurple · 29/12/2014 13:13

Should make it clear - I wouldn't keep it, I would hand to police.

Saki5000 · 29/12/2014 13:45

You have been unlucky. I would phone the shop again if it has been handed it in as they may just not have looked properly.

GraceFox · 29/12/2014 13:46

Funky I'm glad there was nobody like you around yesterday when teenage ds1 bought a train ticket and for about 10 seconds (until the ticket seller sent a colleague onto the platform after him just before he boarded his train) left his wallet on the counter. He had cash in there to see him through the next few days while he visits a friend. Oh hang on a minute. He really lucked out in getting it back. Would have been his own stupid preoccupied fault had it been pocketed by someone with no scruples.

LIZS · 29/12/2014 13:55

Check back again today. I left my keys at m and s food quick pay till once, went back when I realised that afternoon, no sign but left my no. and a description in case it turned up. Next day went back on the off chance and they had been put aside at customer services, no call though.

GermanHouseCat · 29/12/2014 18:00

I've been criticised on this thread. If I found a wallet I would absolutely hand it in, no questions.

However, if I left my wallet behind I would 100% blame myself for losing it, nobody else. It would be my fault for not looking after my own belongings. That is the world we live in and I will teach my DC the same. My DM taught me to "always look back" when leaving somewhere as I used to often walk off leaving my bag/purse etc behind.

I dropped my iPhone on my way home recently, it must have fallen out of my pocket. I sent a message via Find my iPhone and somebody rang me as they had picked it up. I was over the moon at the kindness of that woman. However, if I hadn't had that luck I would only have myself to blame. I believe strongly in personal responsibility in relation to looking after your own belongings.

MackerelOfFact · 29/12/2014 19:16

I'm sorry the wallet went missing.

However, I don't think you can compare it to shoplifting or burglary. Shop stock or personal belongings should obviously be left where they are. The default position is not to move them, because they are not out of place - they are where they belong.

If you find a wallet, however, most people would realise it didn't belong where it was found - and therefore requires relocating. It might be handed to any member of staff, or the police, or the finder may attempt to locate the owner themselves. These actions might not even be undertaken immediately, after all it's going to inconvenience to the person finding it and they might not have time straight away. It's unlikely it would still be where you left it an hour later.

If you want to know where your belongings are, best thing to do is keep hold of them!

FunkyBoldRibena · 29/12/2014 19:39

Funky I'm glad there was nobody like you around yesterday

Why not? I'd have handed it in myself. My point is that there is NO evidence that it has been stolen. All we know is that the OP left it behind. Which is her fault.

The attitude displayed by Funky and others is depressing. If the wallet has been stolen We don't know that it was stolen [which is the point].

Funky, stop being a twat. People make mistakes all of the time, the OP made a mistake and was maybe a little bit careless. However to say it's her fault that someone may have taken it upon themselves to steal the wallet it's ridiculous. Nobody has stolen anything as far as we know. HTH.

FunkyBoldRibena · 29/12/2014 19:44

Pheadra these posters are probably the kind of people who have a "finders keepers" attitude, and would think nothing of keeping someone else's lost property if they happened to come across it because obviously it's the owners fault for losing it, and not their own for being an entitled selfish twat.

No - they are the sort of people to point out that the only thing that ACTUALLY happened was that the OP left a wallet somewhere.

PhaedraIsMyName · 29/12/2014 19:51

Rather pointless selective quoting Funky. I was referring to your general attitude not just this specific case.

Losing your wallet/purse/phone is an accident; fault doesn't really come into it. Picking up and keeping the item is deilberate.

FunkyBoldRibena · 29/12/2014 20:00

Rather pointless selective quoting Funky. I was referring to your general attitude not just this specific case.

My general attitude? You know nothing about me. I pointed out that if you DO leave your stuff out it is likely that someone might take it. Shock horror and all that.

I 'selected' points that insulted me and accused me of being the sort of person who steals. Which is lovely of you all - I appreciate that in this thread, you must blame someone and it looks like that someone is me.

Pyjamaramadrama · 29/12/2014 20:28

Well I'm very embarrassed to be posting this update BlushBlushBlush but think I have to after starting the thread.

Popped back into the shop this evening on the off chance it had turned up, no luck. Got home, dp went in the car to move booster seat to other car, what was there? Yes the wallet Blush

We had checked the car but clearly not well enough, plus I knew I'd left it on the desk and couldn't remember putting it back into my own bag. Can only conclude that ds picked it up himself on the way out as it was under his seat. Good on him.

So this time there's no thief, just one very, very dizzy woman. My only excuse is that I'm pregnant so perhaps it's affecting my brain cells, and I've been rushing around.

Very happy and feel bloody stupid. Please don't flame me too much!

Glad it is sorted

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 29/12/2014 20:31

Lol your poor son must've inherited your forgetfulness, if he didn't know either! Bless him.

FunkyBoldRibena · 29/12/2014 20:34

Well done for posting OP.

So, as suspected - nobody stole anything.

Pyjamaramadrama · 29/12/2014 20:36

Gosh I know, he can't remember picking it up and dp was there also and he can't remember, he knows I put it on the desk but none of us remember taking it out. We think it must have been ds to end up in the back of the car.

I got all worked up thinking someone had pocketed it. As I say only excuse is we have been up and out early each day rushing around, visiting family, sales shopping, in and out of the car so heads spinning a bit.

great news Smile

slithytove · 29/12/2014 20:41

The point is, if someone forgets something, it's a reasonable expectation for it to be handed in or returned.

A woman left her handbag at my shop. Her fault entirely.

Had it not still been there when she came back, that would not have been her fault. As it happened I went through it and rang her recent dialed numbers and got hold of her. She had just withdrawn all her christmas shopping money. Over £200.

I think it's a reasonable expectation of fellow human beings, that if we mess up and forget something, that's it's still there when we return (if not safe waiting to be returned)

SweetsForMySweet · 29/12/2014 20:42

Could they check the security cameras?

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 29/12/2014 20:43

Oh Pyjama we've all done it. Perhaps not quite so publicly but then it is an anonymous Internet forum so don't worry too much. Xmas Grin

Well done for 'fessing up. Made me chuckle.

Psycobabble · 29/12/2014 20:43

???? happy ending !! Flowers

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 29/12/2014 20:52

Actually that does remind me, I left my handbag in a shopping trolley recently once. Got home and got out of the car and thought, where's my bag, and then got that horrible cold wave of dread when I realised that I didn't remember taking it out of the trolley. It was a very expensive bag and for some god known reason I'd left my phone in there instead of putting it in my pocket. I jumped back in the car and practically raced the eight miles back to the supermarket nearly in tears. Dh was away and the mobile phone was set up with Skype and everything so the dc's could FaceTime him. The bag wasn't in the trolley park so I left the car and ran into the shop. I gasped out 'has anyone handed a bag in?' looking like panic personified and the lovely lady on the desk said yes, someone had found it in a trolley and handed it in.

I was so relieved I could have cried. I'd have been pissed off at losing the bag but I couldn't bear losing the phone with dh's contact details on.

I am usually so paranoid about stuff too. I bloody am now. Blush
