AIBU?

To be offended when SIL said my present would be put in the 'unused items' cupboard?

SIL and DD buy quite a lot of fizzy drinks in bottles for work and home. Especially in the summer.

So I bought them a soda stream bundle with extra bottles to take to work and a mini selection of about 20 different flavours.

SIL says on opening it to DD, 'we'll you know where that is going'! DD '?'
In the top cupboard.....!!

You need a ladder to get to this cupboard and they put things in it which they rarely use.

He also brought a bottle of lemonade to us for the Boxing Day dinner!

AIBU to be a bit miffed. (Luckily DD said of course they will use it!)

Get in well with SIL most of the time but sensitivity is almost zero.

agree with the posters who say buy them the present they want, not what you think would be good for them!

"The majority of respondents has confirmed SIL was rude, which is good enough for me, and they've confirmed I am not easily offended. If I was I would be offended about the disparity in price re the presents, but I'm not in the slightest. I am only mentioning it to demonstrate it's very hard to offend me!"

The lady doth protest too much.

Personally, I don't agree with buying someone a present that will cost them money in "extras" (ie the bottles of flavourings etc.,). That to me is not a present...

YANBU. He was rude! Sounds like you put lots of thought into it and he should have been more grateful.

Op is getting a hard time on here in my opinion.
Of course she doesn't approve of drinking a tonne of fizzy drinks and throwing away all those bottles and cans! Who would? As far as we know though she hasn't actually voiced it though.

Her sil liked a soda stream drink earlier in the year and her dd has said they will use it. It's not something I would use but I don't like fizzy drinks, doesn't make it a "shit present". It's a thoughtful present and if nobody used them they wouldn't sell them.
OP ignore those who are trying to look for offence in a soda stream.

Wow so many irrelevant comments on here.
Their reaction to the gift was very rude.

Your sil was rude. I would give your dd the recite to return it. so if they don't think they will use it it won't be a waste of money.

after the recite, give her the receipt Wink

ElizabethHoover, I'm glad I'm not related to you.

You'd get a lump of coal from me for Christmas if you were.

God, some of you are so fucking nasty.

The OP bought her daughter and son in law a gift she thought they'd appreciate and use, and the SIL reacted very rudely. End of.

Not the business of the people on this thread whether it was a good present or not, and it's entirely beside the point whether you would personally want one.

The OP asked one question, and IMO the answer is no, it is not unreasonable of her to be offended by his remark.

He was very rude to say it in front of you but it's what's would have said after you were gone.

Soda stream drinks are horrible & no substitute for ordinary fizzy drinks.

Your sil was being rude. But your present probably came across as judgemental.

Very rude of him to say it in front of you. I would be fucking fuming if my Dh said something similar to my Mum.

Even if he thought it he could've kept it to himself.

He was very rude to say that.

But soda stream type drinks are vile. I drink excessive amounts of soft drink, but wouldn't like a soda stream. I think I'd be grateful for the thought though.

I think you might have taken his comment the wrong way, I read it as he was putting it somewhere nobody else could reach so he could have it all to himself.
So in fact a compliment.

Thank you for your replies I am glad quite a few people do like soda stream drinks. Tried a few myself recently and they tasted fine. I don't think SIL and DD are particularly fussy about drinks and as this summer is going to be glorious Hmm I am sure it will be used.

And I can reassure anyone who asks I didn't say a word when I gave them the present let alone a lot of 'judgemental' twaddle!

And for the sweet ladies who have problems with their MILs, we're not all evil witches, and you'll probably all be one some day Grin

For those saying soda stream drinks are vile, you've obviously not read the thread about putting Blue Nun in it.
