AIBU?

To be offended when SIL said my present would be put in the 'unused items' cupboard?

SIL and DD buy quite a lot of fizzy drinks in bottles for work and home. Especially in the summer.

So I bought them a soda stream bundle with extra bottles to take to work and a mini selection of about 20 different flavours.

SIL says on opening it to DD, 'we'll you know where that is going'! DD '?'
In the top cupboard.....!!

You need a ladder to get to this cupboard and they put things in it which they rarely use.

He also brought a bottle of lemonade to us for the Boxing Day dinner!

AIBU to be a bit miffed. (Luckily DD said of course they will use it!)

Get in well with SIL most of the time but sensitivity is almost zero.

notanold my mum got a filter for those reasons, they really do make a difference especially when making a cup of tea, it tastes much nicer, and she's gone through less kettles. Grin

I'm very parcial to sugar Notanoldbat myself. And the British have always had a sweet tooth, but there were still quite low levels of diabetes and obesity. But coke has an unbelievably high sugar content, unless it it diet coke, which is even more harmful.

Notanoldbat · 27/12/2014 16:20

Coyo. Yes, sugar is the new fat apparently. A dr friend of ours works in an obesity clinic and he is passionate bores us to tears in a good way about the evils of sugar. It is scientifically proven to be very harmful and has added to obesity levels which of course contributes to diabetes. The health risks are enormous!

It's not why I bought the soda stream though but if they choose what goes into their drinks they can cut out the chemicals and reduce the sugar if they choose to.

Wow! You know my present buying habits intimately and I always buy judgemental presents to boot! Not presents I think they will like and be useful? Will never buy DD her favourite perfume again as I'm judging her as smelly! Socks? Their feet stink? Skin care? Because they're looking their age? A onsie? Because they're lazy sods who can't be bothered to get dressed? An iPhone? Made in China by overworked, underpaid workers?

Not a lot of present buying options when you have such a warped way of seeing the world. Confused

Maybe it's because you have an issue with your parents who drove you to eat junk food and fizzy drinks rather than taking responsibility for your own eating habits than my present buying that you say I am judging my family? As you say my DD and SIL can make their own decisions which is why DD likes it.

Gosh, no wonder diabetes is on the rise in the UK. Mexico has been one of the largest consumers of soft drinks in the world and has unbelievably high levels of diabetes.

Thats what comes of buying presents you think people 'should' like & judging them horribly. I grew up on soda stream, it tastes nothing like real coke etc, its horribly watery. I ended up obsessed with real coke (& junk food) for a while as my parents made that and junk food taboo. Stop trying to control their diet and buy something they would like is the best advice. She was a bit rude but maybe she is tired of you buying 'worthy' judgemental presents. They arent stupid, they know they like crap fizzy stuff and its their decision.

When I say high cupboard I mean you literally need a ladder to get in it! Anyway the kiddies are little and can't reach the back of the work surface. DD wasn't rude but SIL was.

No, not aware (me neither) about the Israeli thing. Or coca cola? I did ask myself if the people objecting to me buying it on the ethical buying side were writing on iPads or iPhones and are aware of Chinese workers working to exhaustion and falling asleep at their benches though?

Do they have children? If so then the soda stream is better in a high cupboard.

The other thing is do they boycott Israeli products? Do they boycott Coca-Cola?

But I agree they are down right rude.

Actually sis. I am going to get a britta water filter for me anyway as the water here is so limescaley and chlorinated it is pretty vile. Probably won't bother getting one for DSIL if it's going to join the soda stream!

It does seem to be the norm to drink fizzy sugary drinks so I do wonder about the teeth issue especially with children. DS rarely drinks anything else Sad

I think to be fair even blending pure fruits and making drinks isn't too good as fruit has natural sugars and fruit acid wears down enamel too. DH used to drink endless coffee with 3 sugars and couldn't understand why he was forever at the dentist! Gave up the sugar and solved the problem! Not just teeth but adding to the obesity problem.

Do these people who live on fizzy pop have any teeth left Xmas Confused

Sistedtwister · 27/12/2014 14:25

Fwiw if your soda-stream drinks taste vile it's probably the quality of the mains water. Chlorine really affects the flavour of soft drinks, so invest in a britta filter thingy - hth

I got a Sodastream a few years ago it's a great present. I tend to just use it to make fizzy water though and put in cordial but delicious.

I love old framed maps and similar things. And bright colours cheer up a neutral bathroom! No matter what present I get I always find something nice to say. DH bought me a scarf thing which is exactly the same colour and style as one I already have (there's a logic there!) but I still love the thought behind it.

Child of the 80s I would love a soda stream side issue

But surely the point is the rudeness? DB gave me a frame able book of old health promotion adverts this year. DUncle gave me towels (which I need and had asked for) in rather lurid colours.

I am sure DH whose taste tends to the minimalist, winced at the vision of his white and taupe paradise being overrun by framed historic public-health adverts and bright blue towels.

Had he said 'well those will be straight down the oxfam shop' he'd have been in deep trouble. We can have a row mature conversation about what we do with them in private!

Well of course there are plenty of healthier options than sugary drinks (reading all the most up to date health advice sugar is the new fat) and as SIL is worried about his waistline and lack of physical fitness, it did seem like a good present for both of them.

The clutter in the kitchen is only on one surface and it is DD who is constantly moaning that he just dumps stuff there instead of sorting it out not me! I rarely comment on anything in their lives in a negative way.

In fact they both moan to me about each other's little irritations and when I asked DD why they did this she said it was that they got it off their chest to me so they didn't niggle at each other! That's why they are always so nice to each other! I think it's quite hilarious Grin.

Notanoldbat you made it quite clear that you think there are healthier drink options such ad fruit juice and sodastream fizzy water and you think their kitchen is full of clutter.
Give them the receipt and let them exchange it. Enjoy the champagne cheers!

Oxfam spoke out against Soda stream earlier this year, the product is made on occupied Palestinian land, maybe that's why you sil took issue with the gift.

I think it was a lovely present, and he was very rude.

Glad your DD likes it, that's what is important. Next year focus on her and give him a can of coke.
