to think Thorntons are kidding themselves?

Apparently Thornton's sales are down this Christmas because of problems at their distribution centre. AIBU to think that really, they need to accept it's because their chocolates aren't very nice anymore? Don't know what's changed but there's nothing special about them these days IMO. I remember them being very special indeed.

Thorntons profit warning

I used to like the chocolate they used for their Easter eggs, but it isn't great now.

And their boxed chocolates are just 'truffles' with indistinguishable flavours, and the texture of sawdust.

madsadbad · 23/12/2014 16:49

I like the toffee and you can buy it at pound land Grin
The chocs are shite

distantdrum · 23/12/2014 16:50

Agree...the "truffles" all taste exactly the same. Would rather have Quality Street, me.

wonkylegs · 23/12/2014 16:50

Yup same goes for Austin Reed who also have a warning. Last time DH bought 2 suits from them they were absolutely shocking quality and had to go back, customer service wasn't too hot either. He's stopped going there.
Premium brands need to keep quality up otherwise they just become a bit meh and expensive when I can get better elsewhere.

AlpacaYourThings · 23/12/2014 16:51

It's disgusting.

londonrach · 23/12/2014 16:52

Their chocolate is so bad the pound shop cant sell them. Mind you i now hate hotel chocolate choc as it tastes bitter compared to last year.

MistAndAWeepingRain · 23/12/2014 16:52

When I was little Thorntons was a luxury brand and buying any of their range was a treat indeed. You can get their stuff at Poundland now. Doesn't scream 'indulgent premium brand' does it? I'm not surprised they're struggling.

simbacatlivesagain · 23/12/2014 16:53

I love their ice-cream. I dont think that I can eat enough to increase their profits substantially.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 23/12/2014 16:53

I keep wondering what went wrong with Thorntons. I used to love their truffles.

ILovePud · 23/12/2014 16:56

I like Thornton's chocolate and I can't say I've noticed a difference in taste but I wouldn't consider it a premium brand anymore. I think that ship sailed when they started selling it outside of their own shops.

fairgame · 23/12/2014 16:57

Even my great aunt, who is very set in her ways, has stopped buying Thorntons. They can't call it premium chocolate when they flog in Tesco's. They need to revamp the brand.

Renniehorta · 23/12/2014 17:01

Thornton's used to be such a treat, just going into their shop was a delight.

I had a friend who worked for Rowntree's in York and he always raved about Thornton's chocolate and bought it. However since they sold their soul to the supermarkets the brand has lost its prestige. The design of their boxes has become just run of the mill and the chocolate nothing special. I certainly don't buy it any more.

I bought a number of boxes of Italian chocolates on my way back from a holiday in Italy. They were a real revelation, beautifully presented, quality chocolate and interesting flavours.

Didn't they have a pre-Christmas profits warning in either 2012 or 13 as well? Something is amiss, and not been properly fixed.

(I like their toffee better than their chocolate too).

MamaMary · 23/12/2014 17:04

Thornton's chocolate is disgusting - sickly sweet. And agree that they don't do proper boxed chocolates. I avoid it like the plague.

Gatekeeper · 23/12/2014 17:04

their chocolate is awful ...waxy and tasteless. I love their toffee though and have sacrificed many a filling in worship of it !

purpleteapig · 23/12/2014 17:09

Yes, their chocs now just taste overly sweet and are really same-ish. The problem is they haven't evolved their brand and now they've been usurped by the likes of Hotel Chocolat, Godiva etc.

LoofahVanDross · 23/12/2014 17:14

Agree that their chocs have gone downhill. All taste the same which is sort of nothingy. And if you give or receive a box of Thorntons nowadays it doesn't have the luxury gift feel to it anymore. They are always on discount in the supermarkets and now I just think they are like your run of the mill Cadburys purple box chocs.

Flibbertyjibbet · 23/12/2014 17:26

I get boxes of their chocs from quality save as a cheap gift. For people that I'm not specially fond of Grin

manchestermummy · 23/12/2014 17:29

YANBU. I had the most amazing Swiss chocolate from M&So not to long ago that made Thornton's taste like cheap cooking chocolate.

Sadly MIL thinks Thornton's is posh and gets us the 'Classic' selection each and every year (the one you find in Tesco) so I'll let you know what this year's offering is like.

Sat in the dentist at the mo and could murder any form of sugar tbh.

RattieBagTheOldHag · 23/12/2014 17:30

Oh dear, I'm just about to give some thorntons chocolates to my DDs boyfriends family. I feel bad now Blush

pictish · 23/12/2014 17:32

Yanbu - they're not horrible, but they're nothing special either.

LoofahVanDross · 23/12/2014 17:32

No Rattie don't feel bad. It won't be you that has to eat them so all good Grin

Malabrigo · 23/12/2014 17:32

Didn't they used to do personalised easter eggs? My grandma got us those every year as kids and it was amazing. Haven't bought from them in years though.

silveroldie2 · 23/12/2014 17:32

Have never bought Thorntons but someone bought me a box this year - yuk, crap chocolate.
