In terms of mil sins this is extremely minor but I struggled to contain my jaw drop when mil mentioned this.
Mil babysat the other evening and stayed over. All fine. The next day she mentioned that she had fancied a choccy while babysitting so she had opened a Christmas hamper that Dh's dad had sent us (divorced many years) found a box of chocolates in it, opened the pack and eaten 3. We were saving it for Christmas! Aibu to think this was kind of cheeky?! She had access to fridge, cupboards, pal. P plenty of bread a d etc

Anything in the cupboards or fridge is fair game.But to open a hamper is just rude.I bet she has a good old rummage in your drawers and such.She has no bounderies.

Wouldn't bother me at all.

My MIL opened a bottle of wine that was bought for my friend's birthday present. She was babysitting with FIL and had pretty much a bottle of wine during the day when she was over (I'd had one small glass). Came home to find she'd opened a second bottle and put it in the fridge and all.

When babysitting, you are allowed to help yourself to drink / biccies in the cupboard, but you do NOT go breaking into other people's Christmas presents.!

I was give a great piece of advice many years ago. I have always abided by it and it has always worked for me. "Never get into disagreements with family. No matter what, let it go over your head. It just isn't worth it." I have at times been tempted but always glad I never allowed it to lead anywhere. Try to laugh at her bare faced cheek and hide temptation firm her when next she babysits. You could always leave some sweets for her.

YANBU, that is cheeky! Not really rude, as such, but a bit more of an 'Oi do you mind' opposed you an 'omg how dare you' reaction.

My DM does things like this haha. I had a pack of biscuits for a friend at work, DM made herself and DSF a cuppa and opened the biscuits without asking me first! I was a bit but I let it go as they seemed to be enjoying them so much! They do enough for me so I'm not going to strop over sweeties.
So yes its annoying and cheeky and I'd say something along the lines of 'can you ask first next time?' but its not worth falling out over IMO.

On the scale of MIL things, it's pretty tame. I'd get over it quickly but be slightly put out initially.

My mil goes into my bedroom to see if it's clean (it is)
She's been known to read my mail and even read my valentines card!

When you're by yourself of an evening, sometimes only chocolate will do, and your hamper wasn't exactly wrapped under the tree I suspect. Three chocs for a night's babysitting sounds like a bargain for you. Let it go!

Was the hamper a basket, gift wrapped in cellophane tied up with a ribbon and everything? Did she have to unwrap it to access the chocolates?
