to think it is poor etiquette to post spoilers for the Strictly result on Facebook?

I can imagine how this thread is going to go, so I'll preempt it with:

1). Yes, I know I should have stayed away from all social media, and

2). Yes, it really is a first world problem.

But lots of people watch telly on catch-up and I was looking forward to watching the final with a bit of ironing later. Facebook is for posting pics of your kids and kitten videos. Not for spoilers dammit.

And it's not as if posting your congratulations to the winners is a scintillating read or anything.

Grrr!

I'm also old and also think YABU

Finally someone gets it. Huddles up to comeagain for support.

I find it more irritating when the official FB page for a program puts up a massive spoiler within minutes hours of the screening. There was a bit of a furore in the US recently when The Walking Dead FB page posted a massive spoiler picture and hashing RIPwhoever literally minutes after it had screened. Unfortunately, due to the time difference, the West coast screening hadn't even started yet! Confused Let alone other countries who don't get it until the next day/week. I like following some of those pages and don't really want stuff like that just appearing in my newsfeed.

I wouldn't expect comments sections to be spoiler free as obviously people want to talk about what they've just seen. Posting it to your wall is a little inconsiderate.

crumblebumblebee · 21/12/2014 11:19

YABU because it's not a spoiler. Also, I'm surprised that you didn't think to avoid social media even if it's never happened before. No one usually posts this sort of thing on my FB but if I was so desperate to see the results for myself, I'd avoid all social media.

RattieBagTheOldHag · 21/12/2014 11:28

At least you won't make the same mistake again - it was a bit of a rookie mistake. Smile

saintlyjimjams · 21/12/2014 11:30

YABU - stay off Twitter & FB if you don't want to know the result.

HibernoCaledonian · 21/12/2014 11:37

I intentionally avoided social media because I didn't want to know the result but I totally get where you're coming from.

Once I saw it I did post about the results but in a non-spoilery way i.e. I'm happy with the results.

Philoslothy · 21/12/2014 11:38

I am old, some discussion of strictly on my feed, mainly by people older than myself

Nancy66 · 21/12/2014 11:38

it's one of TV's biggest shows and, last night, nearly 12million people watched the final. So it's going to get discussed on social media. I think that's reasonable.

RedTinsel · 21/12/2014 11:41

YABU once it's been broadcast its not a spoiler. Refer to point 1.

I'm a huge fan and missed it live last night and didnt go anywhere near social media till I'd seen it this morning.

Now if you're talking about people posting hints before the Sunday show has been broadcast, I'm right behind you.

Libitina · 21/12/2014 11:43

I was out last night and totally forgot about recording it until I accidentally saw who won on the BBC news website. I still watched it though whilst eating my breakfast this morning.

MardyBra · 21/12/2014 12:11

"At least you won't make the same mistake again - it was a bit of a rookie mistake."

Have been on Facebook for about 5 years.

JudgeyHotPants · 21/12/2014 12:18

It's not a spoiler if it's already happened and been broadcast.

oswellkettleblack · 21/12/2014 12:20

YABU. I hate it when pp scold other for what they post on their own bloody wall. I am old, too.

Pipbin · 21/12/2014 12:28

Am I the only one reminded of the episode of the Likely Lads where they spend the day avoiding the football results?

MaraThonbar · 21/12/2014 12:34

OP, YANBU to be cross but the etiquette is really clear on this; the onus is on you to avoid social media until you know the outcome for yourself and is long established for similar situations in sport. We can never listen to live radio on weekend car journeys because DH is inevitably avoiding a football or F1 result.

The only exception would be if your FB friend was watching a live event that was being broadcast with a delay, and announcing spoilers. This happens every year with the Brit awards as they're broadcast on an hour's delay, so I've learnt to avoid Twitter during that time.

There is a very old episode of Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads where Bob and Terry bet a man in the pub that they can avoid an England football result for a whole day. They spend the day literally hiding from any news outlet, only to find eventually that the match was postponed.

MaraThonbar · 21/12/2014 12:34

Pipbin jinx!

Orange, I was just about to mention The Walking Dead thing as well. I already knew who had died in that episode, but if I didn't I would've been pissed off big time. It ruined the mid-season finale for the U.S. west coast, Europe and probably the majority of the rest of the fans worldwide. AMC had to apologise as they were getting so much crap for it. Not only was there the RIP hashtag but a big picture of the dead character being carried out. I'd like to think they won't fuck up like that again!

OP, there's a difference between what happened with Strictly and The Walking Dead. Live TV is very different. The only way not to hear/see 'spoilers' is to stay off all social media and turn off your phone.

comeagainforbigfudge · 21/12/2014 18:40

Ach I probably Rioja

won't be able to until boxing day now though.

Just being a grumpy grinchy sod. x

ElizabethHoover · 21/12/2014 18:52

YABU and a bit of a nobber

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 21/12/2014 18:53

Not my problem you haven't watched it when it's on! Like when people say 'don't tell me the score' about a footie match erm okay just tell us all what we can discuss then?

Alisvolatpropiis · 21/12/2014 18:53

Yabu.

Jack dies at the end of Titanic by the way.

elfycat · 21/12/2014 19:10

Mardy you have my sympathy that you has something you were looking forwards to spoiled.

But it was by your own mistake as you went straight to one of the worst secret-spilling sites of them all. DH and I didn't go on the web until we'd seen it. DH was still miffed about the Formula1 result coming up on his phone as a message on the lock screen page so we were careful this time.

It's a bit daft how careful you have to be not to have information thrust at you. It really is daft.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 21/12/2014 19:24

Someone telling me they don't want to know the ending to something or the results of something compels me to want to tell them the answer if I know.

I mean really is it such a big deal? Is your life ruined because of it?
